Re: [slim] Feedback on my device

2011-02-19 Thread bob_mcbob

Right, well after alot of fannying about playlists are still the biggest
pain in the arse ever.

I have used various other programs to create a playlist. My preference
was winamp as I already used that alot. I put the playlist on my NAS
drive in my playlist folder that the SBC looks at. The squeeze centre
sees the playlist but doesnt show any songs in there.

after looking at the format of the playlist and comparing it to one
that i put together using the SB interface i noticed the structure was
slightly differnt, the slashes where the other way round and i had the
ip of my nas in which wasnt necessary, so i ammended my created
playlist.

The playlist is just a txt file. So i was expecting when i chose to
rescan the playlist it would take about 10 seconds...however it seems
to do all sorts of other stuff like merge Various Artists?!?

Once I have my playlists setup correctly I will be relativly happy with
the SB as I will just hit go and wont have to touch the god aweful
interface again!!

The interface is shocking for this product, is there an enhancement
request I can raise/log against in the hope that they may actually
spend a bit of time developing it?!? I wonder if the developers
actually tested it in anger before releasing it

Thanks to everyone who offered me suggestions

Hi Pski thanks for your input. I'll have a look at the Custom browse,
sounds promising, but at first glance does that only effect the
interface on my computer or the menus on the duet?? Eitherway I would
agrue that I shouldnt have to download additonal third party plugins to
do something that is rather basic these days.

I am interested in your comment about the compute power of the NAS.
Are you implying that the menues on the duet are slow becuase of the
NAS? I find that a little strange as even when im not looking at my
library, but perhaps going between the standard menus, things dont seem
very quick. Any pointers to check things/speed it up?

Also, out of interest would you agree with the points I made? Do you
find the interface lacking somewhat?

Again, thanks for the reply.

Depending on the model, ReadyNAS just don't have the compute power for a
great Squeezebox experience. NAS = network attached STORAGE = not a

Maybe there's a misconception here. The menus aren't 'on' your duet
exactly - everything you see, including the content of the menus, is
served up by SBS on your NAS.

For a simple comparison try running SBS on a regular computer, load a
few albums on that computer, connect Duet to SBS on that computer.
Seem a little snappier and more responsive?
Also, make sure server is wired regardless of type.

Re: [slim] Feedback on my device

2011-02-11 Thread ModelCitizen

Scrolling through a large library on a controller is definitely awful,
even with a fast server. I got a controller when they first came out
but now use iPeng on my iPhone. The controller is slow, clunky and
unintuitive compared with iPeng on an iPhone... and all the other third
party Squeezebox apps I've tried for iPhone and Android.

Pair a controller with an underpowered NAS and you're bound to be a bit
disappointed.

Re: [slim] Feedback on my device

2011-02-11 Thread bob_mcbob

Thanks every one for your responses.

ModelCitizen - im glad im not the only one who is experiencing this.
Ill have a look at the tools you mentioned. From the sounds of it you
have a controller, so seems strange you are happy to use your iPhone to
do the job of it.

Chill - Thanks alot, I didnt realise that, and it explains alot. Seems
strange to be streaming the menus to the controller, you would think
it would update the controller with the relevant interface to make sure
it was quick. Persumably since the SBS creates the list of my library,
does it even need to stream the library?! surly it just needs the list
of folders availble uploaded to the controller, which then just creates
the link to play the file. Of course I know that I am looking at this
all very simply, however I just cant help that the whole thing could be
done better.

Phil Leigh - thanks for your response - though i have to admit not one
i like to hear!! I would assume that most poeple use their squeezebox
with a normal computer switched on then?? Which is what I was trying
to avoid. Since one of the ReadyNAS's selling points is that it has
the SBS (among others) built in, its a bit of a disspointment to hear
it may not be up to the job. Since I have to use my NAS to store my
music on, its pointless testing my local machine as thats not how I
would use it

Thanks everyone for your input. Seems like the playlists are a problem
at thier end, however the slowness is possibly an issue with my setup.

peace

Bob

It's not. I doubt if there is anyone who has used both a controller and
iPeng on an iPhone who would not state that the iPhone is not hugely
better.
The other third party apps are better thsan the controller too. I just
have less experience of them.

Good luck.

iPhone controllers are better as they have a touch screen, easier to
navigate, better for playlists and aesthetically better. The duet was
launched before that type of app took off and was quickly overtaken for
many.

however the duet controller can have some benefits, its a dedicated
controller as opposed to a device that you use for calls, texts, email,
internet etc. etc., I find it a lot quicker to control my SB players
from the Duet controller or Touch remote then iPeng, in the living room
I would say that the Touch remote shades iPeng usage (however iPeng
always used if friends are round and I'm in showing off mode!!),
another reason is battery life.

IMHO, even if it's working great, I've always had the feeling that the
SB Duet is the weakest link of the Squeezebox line.

I've bought all Squeezebox model since 2005. I've fallen in love of my
SB3, Boom, Touch and Radio, but The Duet has never been the one I would
recommend to a friend.

There is no better Squeezebox experience then to couple a player with
iPeng for iPad (btw, I bought an Ipad for that).
I've even more fun controlling my SB3 with it's IR remote then using
the controller.

Hi Bob,

The plug-in lets you add the artist by letter to the menus on the
controller.

Re: [slim] Feedback on my device

2011-02-10 Thread pski

bob_mcbob;610187 Wrote:
 Hi there,

I recently purchased a squeezebox duet and use it in conjunciton with
my ready NAS. It seemed like the ideal situation and whilst it does
work there are a few grievances, which I thought I would share and see
 what peoples thoughts are...

1.The method to create playlists has got to be the worst I have ever
seen. Using the controller is very hard and the squeezecentre is
absolutly rubbish. What have other people been doing? This infact has
put me off using the kit quite alot and would probably stop me from
 recommending it.

 2. Using the controller itself is rather good (the buttons are
wellpoistioned etc), and easy to get to grips with, however, scrolling
down a huge list is extreamly tiresome, i have a big library and
getting to a band/song is painful. Surely theres an easier way?
Perhaps when doing a fast spin the alphabet appears so you can
 quickly get to a letter?

 3. The interface is just about adequate (i believe it was alot worse
in the past) however it just doesnt cut it when compared other
interfaces that are out these days. I would like to know if other
people find it slow and sometimes unresponsive??Just navigating between
menus seems to be effort for the device when infact I was expecting it
to be slick and efficient. At first I thought it was becuase im using
it wirelssly - but the connection is good, and I experience the same
when wired. Then i thought perhaps its becuase my library is
big(around 150Gb - which i think is big but may not be) so it was
constantly looking through it...but then I thought thats the job of
the scan process, to make browsing through my music quick and
 painless??

 4. This really is a continuation of 2 and 3 but has anyone else
experienced getting in a loop when trying to scroll through your list
of music, e.g. it gets to the end of all the artists in L and rather
then going to M it starts back at L? ITs a pain in the arsea and
usually happens when trying to scroll quickly

The interface should be slick, quick and effortloss. At the moment it
 is slow and painful.

I do really like the idea of the device but in practice the things
listed above really annoy me and let the device down, what do other
 people think?

I believe if the squeezebox team put abit of effort into polishing the
GUI and the general working of the device it would easily be the best
out there and would be well worth recommending. Until then I have to
 admit I am rather dissapointed.

 Peace

 BoB

Hi Bob,

Welcome to the fun.

If the interface is slow, that can be blamed on the compute power of
your NAS.

There is a plug-in called Custom Browse that allows you to add a menu
item that lets you scroll the letters rather than scrolling through the
whole list.

You might want to look into the Moose program which is an alternative
to the webUI for your PC.
