Hi there,

I would guess that trying a new power supply is a sensible first step.
They are the most frequent failure point and a power outage is often the
point where they no longer get to their feet because of the startup
stress that they haven't had in a long time of constantly being powered.
However, I cannot guarantee you that this is all you need to do. If the
SB3 still fails with the new PSU, it's likely that the situation is
similar inside it, i.e. capacitors needed for a clean startup and to
filter ripple are no longer able to do their job and cause the system to
be unstable or even unable to boot at all. Replacement of the internal
SMD capacitors is my step #2 in this situation usually.
I hate to give you more worries but eventually it could be CPU death
which is not recoverable no matter what. All we can do is hope that it's
only one or both of the other two options mentioned.
Let me know if you need more detail or advice. If you are inside EU, you
might consider sending me the unit to Germany for a full diagnosis (free
of charge). I'm in good training regarding the replacement of SMD
capacitors and testing power supplies. I could not cure CPU death but a
lot of other issues.

Cheers,
Joe

I too have a SB Classic which has just seemed to die on me. It was
working just fine until we had a power fluctuation and now it won't come
on. After going over the blog post linked at the beginning of the
thread, I can see that the red LED is flickering -- going on and off
multiple times per second -- which is an indication that the SB is
rebooting constantly. Thanks a lot for the very informative blog btw, so
much better than just staring at the damn thing wondering what has
happened to it.

Is there anything I can do at this point to try and diagnose further
without opening up the device? I'm considering buying another 5V/2A
power supply but a bit unsure if I should be trying something else
before jumping into that.

My understanding is Net::UDAP only works when the SB3 is not already
configured for networking. I used Net::UDAP once, many moons ago.
Perhaps after the original wifi card died and I found out the remote
didn't work. Now, although I can see the SB3's MAC address (and ARP
requests for "who has ...") I can't get Net::UDAP to talk to it.

Thanks for the pointer though.

For me, the SB3 is a pinnacle of design, both in terms of how it looks,
but in terms of the functionality and the musical fidelity. I haven't
been able to find something that can replace it in the same price range.
I could never bring myself to cough up for a Transporter. The DAC is
very good for the money.

I have wandered off into Raspberry Pi territory, imagining a basic Pi
with a suitable DAC with phono, or possibly digital fibre output, but I
could never decide on one implementation or the other.

Another summary of my situation:

SB3 with no Wifi and no remote control, but a working ethernet
connection.

It has a fixed IP of 192.168.2.10.

No way to perform a factory reset.

I already have a Pi acting as a Kodi box, running LibreElec, which is
configured to use WiFi to talk to my iMac to get stuff to play.

There are Kodi plugins to have the Pi act as either a LMS or squeezebox
web controller.

I did manage to connect the Pi to the SB3's ethernet port, but because
of the way LibreElec works, if it detects a connected ethernet port, it
will try to use that and doesn't time out to fall back on the WiFi
interface. This makes reboots more complicated than they need to be. I
suppose I could ask the LibreElec devs to consider implementing another
feature, or I could use another OS variant for the OS that does support
this. In general, I think Kodi sucks as a user interface, so I don't
want to have to mess around finding another implementation of Kodi that
will do as I want.

I haven't worked out how to configure my home internet DSL modem to pick
up 192.168.2.0 and route the data (maybe I should contact their
support). I also haven't worked out how to get this modem to play
nicely with my Netgear WNDR3700s (v1 and v4), running dd-wrt, to act as
WiFi repeaters for the modem (I can do it via an ethernet cable, but
that is not useful to me at the moment).

Even if I got all that to work, it seems ridiculous to have to do all
that in the first place, just because I can't change the configured IP
address on the SB3.

And I really like my SB3.

not really, sorry. I can only offer you to have a look if you send me

find a solution for this matter. Could be that the CPU is dying (or
whatever it is that causes SB3s to die).

My wifi card and replacement power supplies both arrived.

I installed the wifi card and powered it up using the new PSU.

Same problem.

Wifi not detected, IR remote still ignored (remote seems to work, via
pointing it at the camera on my android device).

What can it be?

Is there another way to reset the SB3, that does not involve the remote
control?

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Classic (SB3) Repair Considerations

2021-01-10 Thread JoeMuc2009

Hi there,

sorry, better forget about that multimeter test. A lot of people fall
for this. If you measure the voltage of the unloaded PSU, you will
probably find that it delivers 5V as it should. But that does not mean
everything is all right. The problem is that a multimeter does not draw
any current.
To measure it correctly you have to apply an electronic load, and
measure the current in that specific situation. A configurable battery
tester such as I am demonstrating in my blog
(https://joes-tech-blog.blogspot.com/2018/11/logitech-slimdevices-squeezebox-classic.html,
approximately in the middle of the page) will create a defined amperage
and show you what voltage is delivered under this load. It should not
collapse below 4.8V at 2A. This can't be done by hooking up just a
multimeter.
As these power supplies are dirt cheap nowadays, I would recommend you
to just buy a new one. The original PSUs are practically all dead by now
after 10-12 years of constant service so this investment is probably not
in vain. Be careful about the polarity though, the inside connection is
positive and the outside sleeve must be negative. You can choose one for
more than 2 Ampères but be sure it's constant 5V DC and no other
voltage. The barrel jack is 5.5mm outside and (typically) 2.1mm inside
diameter. 2.35mm might also fit, I don't know about the 5.5/2.5mm
variant though.
You can find tons of more info on this matter in the blog page mentioned
above.

Cheers,
Joe

Good news: I received my new Wifi card already.

Bad news: I installed it and it is not recognised. Together with this
and the apparently broken internal IR sensor, I am starting to think it
is a PSU problem.

The problems with the unit started after I moved from UK to CH. I can't
find the original UK PSU, so I can't remember if the problems happened
using that PSU (with a plug converter) or if I was using the PSU I have
now.

To check the PSU, I broke out my long-unused multimeter, which refused
to turn on. I looked on the back of the unit and was surprised to see it
needed batteries :). I opened it up and swapped over the mildly corroded
button batteries, which breathed some life into the tester. But it seems
to be over reading voltage by a factor of 3 - 4, both for an eneloop
(rated 1.2V) and for the PSU I have.

So my shopping list now is

2 x G13-A CNB (which seems to be some variant of LR44) (1.5V) - for the
multimeter
1 x PSU 5V/ 2A o/p (linear?) - for the SB3

Checking www.conrad.ch...

and it seems the unit has an IP address of 192.168.10.10 and is trying

These Wi-Fi boards are harder to get. At eBay, I found two offerings
which are both from China. Might be problematic but I'm not sure.
This the link to one of them: https://ebay.us/PdmjPl
AR2413 is the chip that needs to be on the card because it's the only
one the Squeezebox firmware supports. It is also important that you use
the MiniPCI variant, avoid the ones for MiniPCI-e / MiniPCI-x and/or
"half size". They are incompatible. There are only very few different
models with AR2413 and classic MiniPCI. Compared to the PC world,
MiniPCI is the analogy of PCI whereas MiniPCI-e or -x is for PCI-express
so it's more modern and electrically a different design. I think that
MiniPCI Wi-Fi boards may have been used in older notebooks, too. So it's
rather generic, not something specifically designed for Squeezeboxes.
I have only ever seen three different ones that fit. Sorry, could only
find two in my collection right now:

32590
32591

A peek under the hood reveals that the PCB layout is mostly identical in
both. Main differences are in the power supply sections. The blue one
features a useful silk screen whereas the green one seems to be from
Apple

32592

A closeup of the chip in question:

32593

Which also sorts out the myth about AR2431 and AR2413. It's clearly
AR2413 as we can see here. I confused this myself in my blog and just
went and corrected it. Pity! But it really needs to pop the shields and
look closely.

I guess the stickers on the backof the cards are more helpful than what
is in the front-side silk screen for finding anything similar on the
market. I remember purchasing a pack of 10 of these blue cards for
around 20 EUR. But that was years ago.
For comparison, here is a MiniPCI-x half-length card that _won't_fit_
even if the chip used is the same:

32589

The size of these cards is only about 1/3 to 1/4 of the one we need, and
the card-edge connector is totally different.
If you can get a hold of the blue model, that's definitely the newer one
and a better design in my opinion. For instance, it does not need that
hefty voltage regulator that the old card has which spreads a lot of
heat, i.e. is wasting energy.

Hope this helped a bit. Please keep us informed how your story goes on.
Thanks! :D

With respect to the above quoted issues...
First make sure you have removed the failed wifi card even if ethernet
port is configured for use a failed wifi card can cause problems

and second, for the remote receiver issues, try a new PSU, it's fairly
common for a failing PSU to cause issues with the IR receiver (actually
seen this myself with my SB Touch).

Then, if a new PSU resolves the IR issue, then it would be worth
plugging the wifi card back in and see if that bursts back into life
with the new PSU.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Classic (SB3) Repair Considerations

2020-12-19 Thread Beast Of Bodmin

Maybe it's time to throw in the towel for my SB3?

I tried to resurrect it today.

The WiFi card died many years ago.

It fell into disuse after the WiFi died, because my apartment didn't
have ethernet cables in the walls to where cable modem was. Now my main
cable modem is less than a metre away.

I can't do a factory reset, because it won't respond to the remote
control. I think the remote works because if I point my mobile phone's
camera at the remote and press buttons, I see a light.

Net::UDAP's udap_shell.pl discover was unsuccessful, but I understand it
only works if the SB3 is factory reset. See above for why I can't do
that.

I connected the SB3 to the ethernet port of my iMac and with arp I can
see it has an IP address in a range I was using in the past.

? (192.168.10.10) at 0:4:20:7:1c:79 on en0 ifscope [ethernet]

LMS runs on my iMac and binds to the hostname IP port 9000, rather than
*:9000. Grrr!

Is there a way to factory reset without a remote?

Is there a way to get the SB3 to use DHCP?

How much is a replacement WiFi daughter board?

How involved is checking and then replacing the IR diode?

Do any of the Kodi plugins for squeezebox allow me to reconfigure the
SB3?

Thank you for the "new" display I finally took the plunge and replaced
my 'bad display'
yesterday. The replacement has been solid so far.

JoeMuc2009's 'SB3 VFD replacement blog'
(ttps://joes-tech-blog.blogspot.com/2016/09/logitech-slimdevices-squeezebox-classic.html)
was an invaluable resource during the process. I did stumble at one
point where the blog states.

Whereas pins 2 and 3 in the group of 12 are actually shorted in the
display.

Just something to be aware of as it took me a while to realize that I
hadn't soldered the two pads together by mistake.

Thanks to you both there's another SB3 saved.

Making it hard to navigate the menus with the remote after it blanks

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Classic (SB3) Repair Considerations

2019-05-12 Thread pputzer

So after building a piCorePlayer with the 'RaspTouch'
chassis (very nice, but costly), I moved the SBT from the living room to
replace the "broken" SB3 in the bed room. Well, it turns out that
blasting the amps remote didn't work either. Either there's an issue
with RC5 codes, my hardware documentation is entirely wrong (doubtful,
got it from the hardware support engineer of the manufacturer) or this
amp has an IR sensor that needs REALLY bright LEDs.

The amp's remote works fine and is quite bright when viewed with an
IR-sensing smart phone. The IR blaster LEDs connect to the squeezebox
barely show up on the phone, but work fine when glued to the sensor of
the other amp in the living room. Oh well.

Now I've got a spare SB3 that's working fine, but still no IR for that
pesky amplifier. Reasonable offers for the SB3 are welcome (postage
outside of Europe is probably prohibitive, though).

It did work before, but after a move, the SB3 was set up again in a new
place. When that happened, the blaster did not work. I initially thought
the diode/blaster was bad or my IR codes were wrong, so I bought a new
one. That does not work either, though.

Yes, that's how I know it is not emitting anything.

I was actually hoping somebody else with more IR Blaster experience
would answer. I have not used IR Blaster myself yet but would advise you
to check these steps:

- did IR Blaster work previously? How did it stop? Did it become more
and more unreliable, or did it fail at one point?
- if you are trying to set it up for the first time, did you ensure
the polarity and connections on the headphone jack are correct with
  respect to the IR diode?
- if you point your smartphone's camera (in video mode), or any video
camera, towards the IR emitter diode, do you see faint purple flashes
while IR commands are being sent? (please compare to a known-working
IR remote control to verify your camera is picking up the infrared
  light)
- does the headphone jack of your SB3 work properly when being used as
a regular headphone output? If the left channel is missing, that would
be the same pin that drives the IR diode...

Hope this might help you a bit.
Cheers,
Joe

They are soldered in but there are suggestion how to remove them without
desoldering

see

I would advise to read the whole thread and look at the pictures posted.

Just opened the classic, are these capacitors ironed in or in a socket?
Can I just pull to remove them?

Hey Philippe

So we are talking about all of them, listed under "Issue 4: Crashing
Instead Of Playback Starting" right? I think I will open the SLIM now
and check if I see something on the board, if not I will just replace
all of them.

Thanks.

Hi Patrick,

okay, and you are sure that it no longer reacts? It's not just the
display that goes dark? Does playback cut off in the middle of playing?
Because it's a huge difference between a SB that crashes and one that
fails to power its display whereas anything else is fine.
The display power circuitry might have issues similar to the Boom.
However, the fix that I have found for the Boom circuitry does not work
properly in the Classic. I never had any Classic with this sort of
failure though, so there are no advice yet.

Best regards,
Joe

PN me if your Boom / Classic / Transporter display has issues!

LMS 7.9.0 on Windows Server 2012
1x Squezeebox Classic SB2
8x Squeezebox Classic SB3 (3 waiting for repair)
8x Squeezebox Boom (one dead, one waiting for repair)
1x Transporter
2x Controller (one waiting for repair)
3x Touch (1 dead, 1 waiting for repair)
2x Radio (1 dead)

Hey Joe

Great post and even better Blog, with such detailed repair
instructions.

I also own several Squeezbox 3 (Classic) devices. I now have a problem
with one of them. After a few hours of just being on standby the display
turns off, and it won't react on any command until I unplug the power
and plug it in again. After that, it runs for antoher few hours
(sometimes even 24 hours..) but not much longer. I already replaced the
power supply but it did not help, stil the same. I even reset the whole
Slim, and today I tried now the Xilinx reset and hope this helps, but if
not, any other ideas what it could be, that it just goes dark after some
hours?

Best regards.
Patrick

Here is a little more guidelines on replacement WLAN card. I think
compatible chipsets included AR2413 to AR5212. The retail match was
TP-Link TL-WN560G but not a WN360G. Also looking for physically similar
cards (i.e same layout, shield, antenna locations) on pchub
(http://www.pchub.com/uph/category/279-0-0-1-0/Wireless-LAN-Card.html?ps=100=0
) - there are planty of old laptop WLAN card that look physically
similar only costs maybe about €5/$5 such as
Packard Bell 17-000660
Toshiba 17-000660
ACER AR5BMB5
Sparklan WMIA-165G
Sony Vaio VGN-FS515H Internal WLAN WIFI Wireless Card Board 178901432
AR5BMB5
Compex WLM54G 6AA1300 (although this has higher power output which might
be a problem for player power supply)

I replaced a faulty WLAN card by a Packard Bell 17-000660 (google
"wireless 17-000660" images)
