[libreoffice-documentation] Next steps for the Discourse Community instance

2022-04-28 Thread sophi

Hi all,

As you are aware, we are conducting a test on Discourse to move on some
mailing lists. It is not possible to bridge mailing lists and have a
Nabble like gateway.

Here are the options:

- have a Discourse category only hosting a project (like Documentation,
UX/Design). Contributors can post directly in the forum or follow the
discussion and participate via notifications (received by mail).
Subscribers to the mailing list can be mass subscribed to Discourse and
the mailing list will be closed

- for Native Language Projects: we could have the same as above with sub
categories per sub projects, see for example pt-BR who has Docs -
Qualidade - Geral as sub categories

- have both mailing list and the corresponding Discourse category with
no cross communication channel between the two.

- have Discourse read-only category mirroring a mailing list for example
the Announce lists.

- have only a mailing list and nothing on Discourse.

- for users@mailing lists, we won't create a user category on Discourse
Community because it will be redundant with the Discourse Ask instance.
So either you keep the mailing lists or if your language is not yet
there, we create a corresponding category on Ask.

This decision shall be taken by project and by each native language
community. For example the Brazilian and the Spanish communities have
already decided to go to the first option (Discourse only). It seems
that Documentation will have both for the moment.

Discourse Community test instance is here:
https://communitytest.documentfoundation.org/
Please have a look at the archives we imported and let us know if you
see issues or if you want to see how it works for your project.

Redmine ticket with all the details:
https://redmine.documentfoundation.org/issues/3567
(and a *big thanks* to Guilhem for all his great work on this)
Please read https://redmine.documentfoundation.org/issues/3567#note-15
and further on archives migration.

How to proceed next?
Discuss with your project or your native language community and let us
know what you decided among the above options. I've set the reply to
this mail to go on the website list.

When you let us know your decision, I'll send you another mail
containing several questions about the migration type we need to proceed
(mass subscribing list subscribers to the forum, import archive or not,
retain addresses, etc.)

We would like to launch the instance at the beginning of June (as some
communities are really impatient after the test ;) but of course if you
are not decided at that moment, it's still possible to create new
categories once the instance is in production.

Don't hesitate to come back to me if you have questions.

Cheers

[libreoffice-documentation] Fwd: [libreoffice-l10n] Change in the documentation of the Format function (LO BASIC)

2021-05-07 Thread sophi
Hi all,

Could you give some inputs on these changes to Mihail. Please keep the
l10n list in copy as most of the translators are not subscribed to this
list.
Thanks a lot!
Cheers
Sophie

 Message transféré
Sujet : [libreoffice-l10n] Change in the documentation of the Format
function (LO BASIC)
Date : Fri, 7 May 2021 09:07:33 +0300
De : Mihail Balabanov
Pour : LibreOffice-l10n

Hello,

I noticed that in documentation of the Format function, the name of the
first parameter had been changed from "Number" to "expression". (Starts
around
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/translate/libo_help-master/textsbasicshared/bg/?checksum=b7bf473e14ccdc22,
tens of strings are affected).

Why this change? The Format function does not convert an *expression* to a
string, it actually does convert a *number*; Format (1 + 2 + 3) returns
"6", not "1 + 2 + 3". It does not care about how the number is produced
before being passed to it. The next segments mention things like "if
*expression* contains a digit in this position" and "where *expression*
appears in the *format* code" which do not make sense; the thing that
contains a digit at position X to be formatted is the *number* produced by
the expression and being formatted by the function; the expression itself
cannot appear anywhere in the format code.

If we mean this naming to convey the idea that any argument to any function
call may be the result of an expression nested in the call, we should
change all arguments of all functions to read "numeric_expression",
"start_date_expression", "format_code_expression", etc. It appears to me
that a better solution would be to have a general explanation about nesting
expressions on an introductory page about programming in Basic.

If the reader is unfamiliar with basic programming concepts, either name
may confuse them: "number" may be misunderstood to mean only literal
numbers (1, 7.68, .78E5) and "expression" may be misunderstood to mean that
the function actually formats expressions. If the reader is familiar with
nesting expressions in function calls, they would expect the parameter name
to denote the role of the respective value in the calculation, not the way
it may be produced before passing it to the function.

As a quick fix, maybe changing the parameter to something like
"numericvalue" (following the latest convention of "all lowercase, no
spaces/underscores" for the parameter names) would be slightly better than
both "number" and "expression"?

Best regards,
Mihail

It doesn't work from the start center, but open a Writer document for

Thank you for your proposal. I think it's very interesting and would
help a lot. I don't know if it's technically possible in the help files.
The other thing to take into account is those who don't use Weblate to
translate should still be able to do it.
Let's discuss this with Olivier and Cloph who are much more skilled than
me here.

The idea behind OmegaT was to be able to work using the Team Project
functionality which allow to sync on GitHub and allow to work on the
same file to several contributors. It also keep in sync with the sources
and manage the versions of the document.

But that doesn't prevent to use Anaphraseus too, it's up to contributors
to chose their own prefer method.

[libreoffice-documentation] Open Badges for LibreOffice contributions

2019-02-19 Thread sophi
Hi all,

I'm working with Mike Saunders on implementing the Open Badges system
in our community: https://openbadges.org

Mike is working with the Design project to get some badges with
LibreOffice identity. Guilhem is working on the infra side to see how to
automate the process.

In the meantime, I would like to ask you what would be the basis in your
opinion to get badges. If you read what OpenBadges is, it's not only
about contributions but also awarding skills. Those badges get more and
more recognized by companies and universities, so it's also an
opportunity for contributors to add to their experience.

In that regard, what realizations/targets would you propose to get awarded?
Thanks a lot in advance

What you can try is to remove the document from the target and source
files. Under your OmegaT install, you have a [MyTrad] folder (you name
it at the beginning), inside this folder there is a Source folder, where
your original document is and there is a Target folder where your
translated document is stored.
I'd try to remove (store them elsewhere) the files from both, try to
open OmegaT and see if it opens normally.

Autocompletion is working correctly for me. I'm not sure the tag is
needed because often it's placed at the wrong place for translators. We
get a better structure for translation segmentation if it's a new
paragraph.

the button is not working, otherwise all the others are working
correctly. When the Save changes button will be implemented, will I get
a file to commit?
I didn't check thoroughly the structure, do you want me to check it or
did you already did it?

I don't think will set a project for this translation on Pootle because
you'd need to get the sources as .po files. Projects on Pootle are
related to LibreOffice code or website.
Instead, we have a translation project dedicated to guides on Github
(https://github.com/LibreOffice/OmegaT)
Using OmegaT (https://omegat.org/) will allow you to translate and
commit transparently just buy saving, and allow you to work with a large
variety of file formats (TDF ledgers are translated each month from
German using OmegaT for example)
You will find a short guide here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development/UsingOmegaT

Let me know if you need further help.

@Danishka, on the sample document you sent me, there is no license,

It's not easy to work in this area, so lets narrow what can be done in
respect of what you want to do.

It depends of what you call a mistake. If it's only moving a space
between 2 xml tags, then no. If it's together with fixing a typo, adding
content or formatting, then it's ok. That maybe the part Olivier can
coordinate with you.

I mean that formatting and adding content should happen at the same time
so translators don't have to work on the same file several times again
for the same version.

So let's discuss with Olivier who is organizing the work here, maybe he
will have some ideas on how to enhance the process and include you there.
I also have a question on the formatting added to the file, is this
documented somewhere? I recall the moment some years ago where several
where removed and I would like to know what is the rule here.
