Having done a little looking around LinuxMCE, was a distro that I looked at
to store and feed me media. I liked it as it appeared to do a good job
of grabbing media off a DVD or other sauce and adding it to the archive,
but it looks like it is entended to act as a media center and that you need
to watch the media on the pc running it or on thin clients what ever they
are and I just want to be able to acces it from any of my families macs,
PCs iphone, ipod etc.

Just add the medes to a box, (an old PC or mine) and have it available to
all from there. some have said that I could just use samba or VLC or others

No need to attach a screenshot, it probably wouldn't make it through the

Re: [Dorset] XP on Ubuntu

2010-06-01 Thread Andrew Drapper
Thanks Robert,

It looks like all my old disks are ghost CD's

I have re-built me PC, the only thing original is the case and the CD/DVD
drive. So I feel ok to call myself a hardware constructor.

So OME would be fine.

Thanks again.

The likely-hood is these keys are for an OEM (Original Equipment
Manufacturer) version of XP. Which means that 'technically' they can only
be used once by a hardware constructor.

I have had success in the past ringing the phone number that comes up in
the validation wizard and telling them windows broke and I need a new key.
They often cough up for an old OS.

  2. Do I need a full XP CD? Any ideas on where to get them. Ebay has many
that appear second hand, and often for Dell, will these work? If
not, any ideas about where is the best place to get a full CD

There are no legal ways to download an XP cd (unless you have an MSDNAA
license). However as long as you have a license I can't see anything
illegal about installing XP from any source.

You could try one of your restore disks, some will just be a modified
install CD, others are a ghost CD. IF you have a modified install CD you
will get the bundled crapware though.

  3. Is Sun vertualBox a good idea?

Personally I'm a fan, though I'm a fan of many odd things. Its just such a
simple program to use and I can't see any major drawbacks for SOHO use.

Re: [Dorset] XP on Ubuntu

2010-06-01 Thread Andrew Drapper
Thanks John,

I have found a thread about logos in wine, but do not understand much of it.

I have copied the most informative bit below.

Hi Michael, there is a lng thread on here about Logos and Linux. Here's
the main breakdown.

Logos 3 is based heavily on IE +COM and as a result it is nearly impossible
to get even basic functionality on Linux. There is a WINE project page, and
a bounty there to get it working if you want to contribute.

Logos 4 dropped IE+COM and moved entirely to WPF which is part of NET 3.5.
The good news is that the MONO project is working on NET in Linux.

Theoretically we may be able to get L4 running via WINE+MONO(+Moonlight?)
under Linux. As of yet, my attempts to install and run L4 under Linux with
various setups has been unsuccessful.

If however you wanted to run Linux and then run a virtual Machine (QEMU etc)
with Windows installed it should work just fine.

The short answer then is: not yet.

The full answer has yet to be written.

But I think I am going to have to be a little unfaithful again. I need
 to
use a programme that I do not believe will work in wine, (logos 4), so I
 am
thinking of runing a virtual XP install using Sun VirtualBox. I have
 three
  questions.

Are you certain it won't work in wine? Before you bust a gut to get
 Windows
working in a Virtual Machine try installing the wine PPA
(http://www.winehq.org/download/deb). This will provide you with the
 latest
RC (wine 1.2-rc2), which is much better than the default 1.1.x that is
provided with 10.04 out of the box.

  I am running Memory-Map (http://www.memory-map.co.uk) very successfully
 this
  way and everything works.

You might also want to look into winetricks which allows you install
some Windows components into your Wine setup to help things along.

Hi,
What do people on LUG think of Maemo and the Nokia N900 that will use it as
it OS. How well will it stand up to the iPhone or Google Androude phones?

Thanks
