Re: [Dorset] connecting a HP printer to my wi-fi network
These links made me wonder: my HP colour printer has both Ethernet and wireless and is connected directly to the Router. If the sending machine is also connected by wifi/ethernet _as well_, will I get a faster transfer of data when printing ? Or will the fast connection take priority (GB Ethernet)? I assume the later? See you Tuesday evening all being well. Stay safe. Re: [Dorset] connecting a HP printer to my wi-fi network
You may find it useful to give the printer a static IP Address in your Router. [WILL] not may! Are you commenting on my grammar or making a statement of fact? Not worried about your grammar, mine isn't always the best. In all of my networking life since TCP/IP came in, printers have had fixed IP addresses. In other establishments people may not have done that, but it has been easier to manage networks if they are fixed. I have a Brother wifi connected printer, and I I remember correctly, I had to connect it via USB to the computer in order to initially configure it. I have never used the USB since. It has a cobweb across it. HPLIP mentions using USB to make a direct connection to the printer from the computer (eg not via a site-wide WiFi Network). However, only some models support this anyway and connecting to my home WiFi has always worked fine for me. The Brother manual says to connect via USB to configure the device, whether for USB use or wireless use. Now that it has been configured, I use wireless exclusively and the web interface if I have to do anything on it. But of course this discussion is about HP printers. HP are actually very good at supporting HP Printers; you need to install HPLIP. You don't say which Linux Distro you are using, but with Ubuntu derivatives, HPLIP is in the Repositories. Once you've installed it, fire it up and launch the Device Manager. You should then be able to click on the green + button to add a new device. Depending on the particular printer, you should find it will seek out your printer, however out of the three HP Printers that I've owned I had to manually install them twice. You may find it useful to give the printer a static IP Address in your Router. -- Terry Coles -- Next meeting: Online, Jitsi, Tuesday, 2021-03-02 20:00 Check to whom you are replying Meetings, mailing list, IRC, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk New thread, don't hijack: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk
Re: [Dorset] connecting a HP printer to my wi-fi network
We have a HP Envy 4502, which has the ability to set up the WiFi connection on the built-in display. Perhaps yours can do something similar? The HP drivers and HPlip GUI are very good by the way and work excellently for network printing and scanning on Linux.
