Running it without the 'sh' worked. my mistake.
It downloaded a list of 1791 matching programs!

If it created a directory, I don't know where it is. it is certainly not
in this Software directory where I have the program.

Thanks all for the help. Now I guess I'll have a go at the GUI.

Re: [Dorset] BBC iPlayer downloads

2015-05-26 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Hi Terry,

 That Web GUI makes it all a lot easier.

I've never used it, but IIRC the release notes make it clear it lags the
command line and doesn't keep up with the latest BBC hoops that needs
jumping through for all functionality. So if something doesn't work,
try the command line.

Most of the options aren't needed for typical use. I have a few scripts
I edit over time, e.g. fetch a new index with `./refresh':

#! /bin/sh

# Quiet avoids the default of listing everything added,
# but it still searches for a pattern that matches everything,
# so give it something that won't exist.
exec ./get_iplayer --quiet --refresh --refresh-future Lj66fjtqfhG

Search the index with a regular expression, `./search
'this.week|daily.politics'':

#! /bin/bash

./get_iplayer --nopurge -e 31536000 --future \
--exclude-category children \
--exclude-channel '\b(?:Alba|CBBC|CBeebies|S4C)\b' \
$@

List things added to the index by a recent refresh, `./newall':

#! /bin/bash

# --since is in hours.
./search --since 2 $@

More details on a search result, giving the URLs for the BBC site, e.g.
`./info 3141':

#! /bin/bash

./get_iplayer --no-purge -e 31536000 --future -i $@

A canned list of new things I'd like to know about, `./newfavourites':

#! /bin/sh

./newall 'jackanory|think.of.a.number|...'

Get something now, but not if it's signed as I find the smaller picture
distracting, and try to learn sign language instead, `./get 3141' or
`./get --pid foo42bar'.

#! /bin/sh

: ${1?}
./get_iplayer --nopurge -e 31536000 --future \
--modes best --subtitles --versions default,audiodescribed \
$@

I use the PVR features too, adding future programs to it as I learn of
them and running the download at times of free bandwidth.

Cheers, Ralph.

What happens if you type sudo apt-get update?

I find this usually fixes things when apt gets confused.

Also, I presume you installed as per the wiki?

 tried the search using --type, but I only get the same answer.

Hi Terry,

The BBC quite often change things meaning an up-to-date script is
required. The -u option will update the script and plugins with later
versions if they're available.

Andrew Montgomery-Hurrell wrote:

AIUI, the BBC withdrew the source of information for what was available
so searches can miss some of what's available now that they're using
information cobbled together from elsewhere.
https://squarepenguin.co.uk/wiki/releasenotes/release289/ has more
details. I still find its search sufficient, but one can always use the
BBC's iPlayer web site to search and then use the resulting URL or PID
with -g/--get, e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05vlwxj or
b05vlwxj.

 Running the following:

 ./get_iplayer 838 --get

 Began downloading the episode

--subtitles can also be useful.

Cheers, Ralph.

Well; don't ask me why, but I just typed:
  ./get_iplayer

and it downloaded the full Index! There is nothing different to what I was

shopping.

As the Yanks would say - go figure!

I'm visiting folks in Scotland at the mo so not at my machine for exact
reference, but it's worth mentioning that get-iplayer also has an embedded
CGI server you can access to provide a web GUI to your browser, which looks
quite similar to the BBC iPlayer pages and has similar search capabilities.
Very handy if you don't want to handle the complicated CLI commands.

Look at the 'web PVR Manager' section of the wiki docs at
https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/manual#manual-wpm

Get what to work? Is this something built in to iPlayer? It's probably
using Adobe Air/Flash or some other proprietary thing that doesn't work
under Linux. You could always try https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer
instead.

2015-05-24 Thread C A Wills

Hi Peter

Reading the last comments, I went straight from watching the recorded
Formula 1 to iPlayer and it 'just works' and I'm on Mint 17.1
Cinnermon. As far as I can remember I've not added any additional
software to help so could it be KDE?
