RE: [DQSD-Users] [ dqsd-Feature Requests-562414 ] add optional loaddelay

2002-05-30 Thread Monty Scroggins

FWIW -

IMO, if the user can get some feedback in the toolbar
that the searches are being loaded, the delay would
be reasonable. Maybe some text "Building Search DB.."
could be displayed in the toolbar during this period..
After all this is only going to happen once..

That sounds good to me. I'd prefer a user-definable delay, because the
delay on that first onFocus() might be annoying.

RE: [DQSD-Users] [ dqsd-Feature Requests-562414 ] add optional load delay

2002-05-30 Thread Daniel Martin

I've been thinking about this alot.

Couldn't we load up the very minimum for dqsd? If we load only the form and
the clock, and we set the onFocus event of the input/textarea to load the
rest of the dqsd? This way, we don't load up the bare minimum until dqsd is
focused by the user. This might solve the system tray issue and reduce
memory usage until the user actually uses dqsd for the first time.

Initial Comment:
Delaying the load of the XML files at startup may solve
the problem of the disappearing tray icons. There's
already a 'startupdelay' but it only applies to UI resize
calculations.

2002-05-30 Thread Glenn Carr

Yeah, WinZip does too. It just doesn't allow you to get information from
the registry about the current install directory (AFAIK). I guess we could
have it prompt for the default install, and have the user enter the actual
install if it was different, but I'd prefer that it be automatic.

Is it possible to grab the install directory from the registry, in case they
aren't using the default?

a target directory for the extraction, and the user is
asked to confirm/override the default target directory

I think so. Currently our search XML files typically only have one tag, but they can have more than one. So, there's no reason someone
couldn't use:

(or something like that... not sure about the path)

> And does that mean all functionality for things like calendar,

Everything in dqsdtools.dll is generic (or should be), and isn't associated
with any one search. But the features you mentioned are certainly
candidates for extensions at some point. I'd suggest leaving them as is
if/until we come up with some solid scheme and it works for a few simple
extensions.

A minor question... I keep waffling between 'extensions' and 'packages'
because of my Unix and Emacs influence in my earlier days. Anyone prefer
using 'packages' instead of 'extensions' (if we add this feature)? [Dave,
are you listening?]

Sounds good. But can these XML files contain all the functionality needed
(or links to the files that contain the functionality needed)? What I mean
is this... can the XML files contain links to the other files (like .js
files)? And does that mean all functionality for things like calendar,
calculator, snippets, etc... are removed from dqsdtools.dll and/or
search.htm and move into .js files in the subdirectory?

Maybe I'm in over my head...

I thought so too, but I'm not sure this is possible with self-extracting
archives (anyone know if it is?).

If it's not, I think we should just use small NullSoft NSIS install kits.
The scripts would just be a small subset of the DQSD search.nsi, and it
would allow stuff like... determining if there was an installation, creating
an 'extensions' subdirectory if necessary, only overwriting existing files
if they were older, etc., etc.

More thoughts?

Sounds good to me.. The extensions could be bundled as
self-extracting zip archives, making them easy to overlay
into the DQSD tree. (provided the user can specify where
this is, I dont have DQSD installed in C:\program files\..)

RE: [DQSD-Users] [ dqsd-Feature Requests-562098 ] allow for optional extensions

2002-05-30 Thread Glenn Carr

I didn't know anything about xteq... pretty interesting.

Here's what I'm thinking right now...

- have an extensions subdirectory
- in the extensions subdir have a single .xml for each extension
- any extraneous files needed by the extension would be in a subdir of the
extensions subdir.
- at startup, all the .xml files in the extensions directory would be loaded
just as the searches are now.

E.g., googlespell is an extension I'm working on. So...
- I create a googlespell.xml in the extensions subdir
- I create a googlespell subdir under the extensions subdir
- I add the extra files I need to the googlespell subdir

It's basically no different than searches, just separate from them.

Thoughts?

They are basically only a file containing a script in X-setup's language. Something
more elaborate is, IIRC, Winamp's plug-ins : you double-click them (they have a
special file extension, registered by Winamp), and they get unzipped and all necessary
stuff gets done also.

RE: [DQSD-Users] toolbar

2002-05-30 Thread John W. Bairen, Jr.

although now that i think about it some...
i think you need to have "Active Desktop" enabled to do this.  I don't know
if 98-1 has the ability to do Active Desktop.  but i imiagine if it does,
it isn't enabled by default.

can you try enabling Active
Desktop?

produces a "whiteout"
secion "New Toolbar - QuickLaunch - even - Add quick

with a little known file on Win 95 disc called "quicktray"  My quick

is added to the "clocktray"  Now when I add
dgsd it shows itself there and says to run installed agains.. OK I'll
try it..Still no response
Any ideas?

FWIW, i think you are on to something Glenn. the question then becomes, how
do other apps allow extensions/plug-ins? does anyone know how x-teq x-setup
does it? (www.xteq.com)
