Ian:
The R-4B still has the OB2 regulator. The R-4C uses a solid state
regulator, in keeping with Drake's transition from tubes to solid state devices.
You will note the significant reduction of the number of tubes in the C
series.
Removing tubes in the design reduced energy needed, cut
Dear drake lovers,
I am in the process of building a simple PS for TR4.
Judging from the circuit of AC4, I need a transformer
that can supply HV (~ 750V) and MV (~250V) and
LV(~ -70V).
I got a transformer with the following 2nd AC terminals:
- 289V/200mA: this can supply around 750V with
My R4B does NOT have the OB2, Drake removed that in the later R4A series,
early R4A had the OB2 and 6GX6 product detector, but the 11 tube version of
the R4A did away with it...73 Tim K8WBL

Hopelessly Lost:
Interesting. I've seen 2 different schematics for an R-4B, one with V11 and
one without V11 (OB2). Neither indicate serial number ranges.

Tim is correct. I was thinking of the T-4XB. Sorry to have been
misleading.

I'd be interested to know if the guy who received the R4 with the smashed
PTO had a word with the person who sent it? Just Curious!

Hmmm, that's interesting, both my R4B's, serial #9K and 12K, do NOT have the
OB2, but the R4A's I have do, but these are definitely the earily R4A's,
serial # both in the low 2K,lLike I said previously, the early R4A's were 13
tubes and the later ones 11 tubes. My R4B's has 9 tubes. Drake did
Make that +650V on the high voltage side and it needs to supply up to
500ma maximum or 325W. That's a lot more power than your transformer can
supply. For high voltage I would suggest a 1:2 line step up transformer
capable of supplying up to 1A of current. When used in a voltage doubler
circuit
I guess then Drake must have dropped that sometime after the R4B was
introduced, as the other guy has a schematic of an R4B that also shows the
OB2, wonder if anyone on the list here can verify that their R4B unit
actually has the OB2 regulator in itthanks for the correction.

Gerry, check your R4B, probably only 9 tubes, tube #V6 is not there but they
list it. Tim

I seem to remember there
My R-4B has V-11, the OB2 VR tube. The serial number is 13397C. I am the secone owner but bought it directly from the original owner who was a friend and colligue of mine, now unfortunately SK.

Interesting...
According to Drake schematics, ALL R-4A's had the 0B2, and
the first thousand R-4B's (S/n 7000 - 7999) had one. S/N
8000 and up did not!
I have seen B's with the hole for the tube cut in the
chassis and a copper-plated plate screwed over it.
Are you SURE it's in
Tim -
Not quite... The two tubes dropped from the early R-4A
were V6, the 6GX6 Product Detector, and V13, the AM detector
and first audio amp. The VR tube stayed on until the second
version of the R-4B.

ALMOST all 4 Series schematics have serial number ranges on
them. It consists of the date and first serial number
affected in the form MmDdYYXX. As in 115688000 for
01/15/68 s/n 8000. You may ask how we know it's 01/15/68
and not 11/05/68..? Educated guess since the early R-4B
