Your correct, USB does stand for Universal Serial Bus, but it is just an unfortunate similarity in naming. The (simplified) definition of Serial, is to send 1 bit after the next. Since the USB interface works in that manner, they felt it acceptable to name it Universal Serial Bus. The hard

You are probably not going to be able to make this work with just a cable. USB has a host end and device end. The chips that implement those end serve only one of the two functions. It's not like a serial cable that you just have to get the right pin-out on each end. Your GPS is a device end
