The fact is however that we really cannot generate Q signals just for the

Larry, you are right that it doesn't fit. However, everyone knows
exactly what it means. Can you imagine the confusion as everyone, world
wide, tried to implement such a change. I learned it years ago as a
novice. While it literally isn't correct, why change it if it ain't
 broke. I don't get it.

halls, under that curved piece of wood, and promulgate
in the right direction. Oh, Wayne Mills, what say OM ?

We CW Ops have needed an appropriate Q Signal for
years for Is the frequency in use ?

QRL ? - Are you (your station) busy (sending/receiving
  traffic) ? does not fit.

QRZ ? - Who (what station) is calling me ? does not fit.

   I though about QFU: F - Freuency, U - use. That does
fit, but well we CW Ops know that at times (especially
in unruly pile-ups), we hear all too many FU's.

So...What about QFB ? - Is the Frequency Busy (in use) ?

What say CW Ops - can anyone come up with a better
one ? On SSB, Is the frequency is use ? - that's easy. We
CW guys need something more fitting than QRL or QRZ !

[DX-CHAT] Need IOTA Info YJ0VB 10SEP03

2003-09-10 Thread Tony Martin W4FOA

I believe Murphy has visited my shack and hidden my
IOTA directory with ALL of my entries! Until I can work out a deal with
ole Murph, wonder if someone could help with a little info?

This morning (9SEP), YJ0VB very active on 40 and 30
and was very reluctant to give any info, however one spot did note he was "on a
new IOTA". Finally he gave the name of the island, MALEKULA ISLAND", but
since I don't have my IOTA book, I am unable to come to any conclusions on the
status of his operation today.

Anybody help?

I have a feeling that "Vlad" is doing some island
hopping and not making any differentiation between one island and the other,
when in the same DXCC country. For example I think in one case he was on
perhaps 3 different IOTA's but the call remained the same. Maybe when he
returns home he will publish some sort of "diary" and let us all catch up on
exactly where he was and when.

Thanks any help.

As long as both parties know what is being asked, there isn't a problem.
If both people understand QRL? to mean Is this freq in use?, no matter
what the book says it means, then that is what it is going to mean at the
moment. If everyone understands what IE? means, then that will also

The problem is going to be with new ops who don't know what these accepted
meanings are when they differ from what the book says or aren't even in

[DX-CHAT] New Q Signal - QRT

2003-09-10 Thread Larry, K4WLS
H.many times good intentions end up with just
that, good intentions.

To my knowledge, we amateurs world-wide can adopt
any operating practice we like as long as:
1. That practice is withinin the guidelines of the laws and
regulations governing the issuance and use of our
 license.
2. That practice is in keeping with the spirit, fraternalism,
and international good-will of amateur radio.

Since ?? and QRL?? don't seem to be too badly broken
on the bands, most of you have said, Why fix them ?

Thanks all for your imput !!

With all the changes in the world in the past 100 years,
isn't it great to know that the original form of RF
communications, CW, is still very much alive and thriving
well.

Thanks and Good DX All,Larry K4WLS
