Swan Island and Swains Island are two different places. Swan Island used
to be KS4 and is now part of Honduras as of 8/31/72. I have that
confirmed as one of my 12 deleted countries. I think the correct prefix
for Swains would be up to and your logging program.

Re: [DX-CHAT] Real prefix for N8S query

2007-04-13 Thread Zack Widup

Hi Charlie,

Swan Island and Swain Island are two different islands. Swan is off the
coast of Honduras and now belongs to them. The prefix I'm familiar with
used to be KS4.

Swan Island was once the site of Radio Swan, later called Radio Americas,
that was a CIA-operated station broadcasting anti-Castro transmissions to
Cuba on 1160 and 6000 kHz. I have QSL cards from them somewhere around
here ...

[DX-CHAT] unsolicited QSLs

2007-04-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Yes, it just goes to show how many people work you who don't really need the
contact. Unless it's really rare, or a first time DXCC, I think usually less
than half the contacts request a card {speaking pre-LOTW era}. Now is likely
lower with LOTW. From CY9 I can say yes, every time I've went I recognize many
of the same calls I know I've worked each and every time I've gone there. Shame
not to let the guys who really need it have more of a shot. Then there are the
guys who have worked you and a decade later send a qsl request!

Charles, I believe that Swan Is belongs to the US., and the correct
prefix is KH8/S. Anyone have anything different?

As for 73, it goes way back to the days of predominantly CW. 73
is/was an on the air exchange at the end of a CW QSO and means best
regards, and it chaps my grouchy old fanny when people write 73's.
73 is already plural, and by adding 's to it, it translates to best
regardses. Just another Amateur Radio tradition being polluted and lost.

RE: [DX-CHAT] Real prefix for N8S query

2007-04-13 Thread k0luz
Swan Island is NOT NOT NOT Swain Island. I have a qsl and actually a
deleted country credit (I think) in the name of Swan Island which was KS4
and is in the Carribean. Swain Island is in the Pacific. There is no
correlation between the two.
