The best bet would be monitor their QSOs as FO5A/mm and work them. The
will give their present position if asked. The are currently around 200
miles north of Clipperton.

2007-12-24 Thread af2c

Old news Lou:

Iraq to Be Back on the Air Later This Month (Nov 13, 2007) -- Diya Sayah,
YI1DZ, President of the Iraqi Amateur Radio Society (IARS), announced today
that effective November 20, all Amateur Radio activity will be "back to
normal" in Iraq. Sayah said, "All Amateur Radio operators in Iraq who carry
a valid Iraqi license will be able to use their radios according to
regulations of IARU Region 1 and the IARS." Amateur Radio activity in Iraq
was suspended in March of this year, with the suspension affecting both
Iraqi citizens as well as any foreigners -- including military personnel
and contractors -- who have been on the air from Iraq. The request to halt
all ham radio activity and the issuance of licenses in Iraq originated with
a letter from the Iraqi Ministry of Defense to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri
al-Maliki as part of a new security plan, Sayah said.

Re: [DX-CHAT] Power cycling the ACOM-1000

2007-11-19 Thread af2c
Barry's point is well taken. However, whether one is speaking about a rig,
amplifier or computer another factor must be considered.

Dust and other small foreign materials abound in our shacks...It's
unavoidable. This stuff is pulled into the our gear and eventually will
cause failure of the equipment unless preventive maintenance is performed
on a regular basis. If the equipment is on over long periods of time, the
accumulation of dust really becomes a problem. Even under normal use, you
can see dust packed on the bulb of your 3-500 tubes or in the fins of
ceramic tubes.

I would hesitate to leave the equipment on while I'm not using it or not in
the shack.

Another reason would be just for safety. If the equipment should fail and
you're not around...Enough said.

OTOH, my computer is left on from the time I get home from work until bedtime.

2-3 hour periods when it is being used, or to leave it on all day as I
have been doing? I know the off/on cycle stresses components,
especially tubes, but so does leaving a piece of equipment running 15-16
hours a day.

-

It has always been my understanding, that it is less wear if it is turned
all day
rather than switching on and off several times. The lifetime for the tubes
is definately supposed to be longer.
The other side of the coin is of course the rising cost of energy and what
our excesses are doing to the environment.

Shepherd spoke about the book during many of his broadcasts. The book and
author did not exist, due his broadcasts his fans were besieging all the

[DX-CHAT] More Shepherd Trivia

Earlier in the Shepherd thread, "In God we Trust" a book by Jean
Shepherd was mentioned. I'm proud to say that I have a copy of the book
and a 1 hour tape I did with him back around 1960 for a college radio station.

Now here is a bit of trivia for all Shep fans. Actually it's a trivia
question:

During many of his broadcasts he mentioned another book. The book never
existed, but the demand became so great, that Shepherd wrote the book under
another name.

What was the title of the book and what name did he use he wrote the book?

Oh yes! I have a copy of the book.

3. Avoid isolation. have rag chews and attend Hamfests and club meetings

Re: [DX-CHAT] DXCC application

2006-10-18 Thread af2c

Tom -

I believe that you are over reacting to the note you received.

1. The directions at the top of the form are very explicit.
2. It would be nice if you actually "quoted" the contents of the note
rather than giving your interpretation.
3. Not following directions slows down the process and, effectively, slows
the checking of other DXCC applications especially if you are submitting a
large number of cards.
4. I have never found anyone at the DXCC desk as being anything other than
courteous and helpful.

5. Calm down and follow directions.

Actually, working by call area is NOT a bad idea. It gives the operator
(DX) an opportunity to get a picture of current propagation. Use of
propagation programs, and the propagation commands on your cluster are only
good for a start, but theory and practice are two different things.

That is, if you've been listening a while. If just happen on the frequency,
and you hear him work a 1 then a 2, you might think he was not listening by
numbers at all, and dump your call in. That's why I think it's better to work
at least a few from each call area.

authorized by law to issue this permission. I think that is the question
raised.

I don't know the motivation of the idividual who questioned the operation,
but how would you feel if you had been working for months, maybe years to
get legal permission to go there and were told no, no, no, there is no way
an amateur radio operation will ever be allowed, then suddenly a
DXpedition shows up? Could you resist the temptation to contact someone
and say what the h e double toothpicks is going on, I was told no amateur
operations were allowed?

Maybe that wasn't the individuals situation, I don't know. Perhaps the
individual was just trying to see if the Dxpedition really had permisison,
and didn't realize all the fuss it would cause. Maybe they were jealous
and ticked off because they weren't allowed. We may never know. But before
the DX community sends out a hit man, at least try to understand how such
an individual may have felt about the situation.

The fact that legal charges at one point were considered makes me think
that at minimum the person giving verbal permission didn't really have the
authority to do so. Maybe I'm wrong about that, and perhaps if that was
the case the DXpeditioners didn't know that at the time. As I said before,
for a previous DXpedition we were told to just go without permission by
the person in charge, because they wouldn't enforce the rules as written.
I am sure if we did that, and our DXpedition was questioned, we would be
in a similar pickle, even though technically we had "verbal permission"
for the operation. But, that individual did not have legal authority to
give verbal permission, and we knew it.

Do you really believe that much of the same trash would be
eliminated?
Those who QRM now may hesitate to do the same on the frequencies used in
"the good old days."  However, that hesitation won't last
very long.  Some will use CW...Others won't care about what section
of the band they are using.
Check 4Øm when a rare DX station is working the U.S.A. using a wide
split.  One of the first evenings when Peter One came up on 4Øm SSB
to work the U.S.A. Pactor operators thought nothing of coming up on top
the 3YØ.
I guess we'll just have to live with it.

Patience is a virtue.
There are many DXers who are in need of the Chesterfields.

WX permitting, they will be there until 22 October.  They have been
on 17m, and 3Øm with quite readable signals.  However, propagation
is not favoring Florida.
Some stations in Florida have worked the group.  Propagation charts
are OK, but are usually drawn-up many days in advance of
publication.  Don't rely on them!
A better bet is some of the better propagation software which relies upon
current SF, A and K indexes, etc.  The software, along with
experience will serve you well.
Check-out 12m, 15m, 17m around 24ØØZ...You may be surprised!

Your statistics are interesting.  However, you must also answer the
following questions:

1.  Is the QSL rate a product of the Bureaus or the stations you may
have worked?

2.  Is the QSL rate the product of a combination of Bureaus and the
DX stations?

3.  Are you aware of the fact that some stations do not QSL but
never let you know?

Many of us have sent $$$ for cards and never received them or did receive
them...via bureau.  What are we to think?

have

I was believing to buro system and i like very much to have qsl from
other
stations. I don't like eqsl or lotw, but i am thinking and especially
after
the above numbers that buro is only for the romantics now. If i had used
all
the money i have spent to print qsls to send direct requests i would
have
better dxcc numbers for sure.
Note that i have spent more than 600euro (abt 600$) to print and send
18000
qsls. I am thinking seriously to reply only but this means that my
total
number of 29% will be decreased and that some guys who are interested for
my

in

RE: [DX-CHAT] Deleted vs Expunged

2003-06-16 Thread af2c
It seems to me that this discussion is a bit late in
coming. Remember...The rules as we see them now were and are part of DXCC
2ØØØ. The same rules that were brought from the mount just after BS7H was
approved for DXCC status under the "old" rules.

I don't believe that an entity such as BS7H and others would be accepted
under the new DXCC Rules.

The real question should be is: "Is the current "4W" petition in the spirit
of the DXCC Program?" Is the current petition in the interest of all those
involved in the program and is the petition to be considered as a
constructive or destructive force on the "program"? Operative word "Spirit."

The current "petition" , as I understand it, is based upon Section 1
subpart b of the current rules:

"The entity has been assigned a callsign prefix bloc by the ITU. A
provisional prefix may be made by the Secretary General of ITU. Should
such provisional assignments not be ratified later by the full ITU, the
Entity will be removed from the DXCC List."

According to the petitioners, the ITU never ratified the assigned callsign
block! The ball is in the hands of the ARRL and its "membership."

Perhaps we should look at Section III - 1 of the DXCC Rules: "Each nation
of the world manages its telecommunications affairs differently. There
rigid universal accreditation procedure cannot be applied in all
situations. During more than 50 years of DXCC administration, basic
standards have evolved in establishing the legitimacy of an operation."

Surely the above paragraph is in the true "spirit" of DXCC Program.

Let's not compare apples and oranges.

Bruce is doing an excellent job handling Ed's activities.  However
Garth has to handle an operation which produced over 50,000 Q's in a very
short period of time...A task which can and will take some time to
finish.

How Garth prioritizes the cards is certainly his business...Those who do
the most or give the most certainly deserve a special thanks.
Contributions never cover the cost of DXpeditions, but those who
contribute other than an SASE or a bureau card will are entitled to top
of the pile treatment.

A good estimate of the completion date of the QSL chores would be some
time in December.  This does not include bureau cards.

Bureau cards and direct cards will continue to arrive in Garth's mailbox
for years to come.

A manager's job is thankless and those who complain don't know anything
about the task at hand.

Your cards will come...Just wait.

I agree with Tony.  I have been using the same
"Telex" unit that he describes and find them very comfortable
and excellent it terms of frequency response.

Like Tony, I do not remember the model number for the headset.
However, I do have the original box...Somewhere.  I suspect that
they are "Telex Lightweight Headphones", model #1301 or #1302,
wght Ø.1 pounds or 1.6 ounces.

The plastic tips should be cleaned periodically.

Another positive aspect of the above headset is that you can pivot one
tip away from your ear to listen to xyl while using the other ear for
more important things. ;-))

Also, the feed cord can be placed either on the left ear piece or
right.

Second choice...Military headsets with deerskin ear muffs.  Great
response, great privacy...But they are not light in weight and if your
shack is not climate controlled, uncomfortable.

IC-735 with P.S. can be bought for under $500.00. Drake TR-7 series
rigs can be bought at a slightly higher price.

Parts and service are still available for most of the oldies...If not
from the manufacturer, but from experienced technicians.

None of the above have built-in ATUs...So resonant antennas are are a must.

antennas. In most cases, a good ground systems is a must...This may
require a great deal of work in some parts of this great land.
Butternut HF9V would be a good choice for the serious amateur...But
requires ground radials. Ground mounting (no more than 7") is advised.

Next choice would be the Cushcraft line which seems to work "OK" but
does not like to be mounted more than 16-20' above the ground.

The Gap antennas are used by some...But, just too many parts and
thing can go wrong. A real "Rube Goldberg" antenna.

MFJ verticals. Power limitations and another "Rube Goldberg."

Wire Antennas- various masts , metal and fiber glass, can be purchased at
military surplus houses. Inverted V and dipoles can be erected.
