[DX-CHAT] my 2 cents worth

2008-03-18 Thread harris_ruben
1. If I see my call in the log, I'll leave the band/mode for someone
else to work. No need for me to dupe what I can see is a good QSO.

2. I got a card from an expedition with one of my Q's NIL. The
on-line log showed my missing contact as N2ERM (not N2ERN). Well,
there isn't an N2ERM. The manager noted that I might wait a few
months and resubmit the card with a note that they loggged my call
incorrectly. Hell, if they didn't get my call right, then I didn't
have a good 2X to begin with. I didn't bother resubmitting it.

So yes, I like on-line logs. They can help keep pileups down and
answer lots of questions.

[DX-CHAT] A public apology to ND1L

2007-07-24 Thread harris_ruben

We might all note that Bill appears to be a subscriber to this list.

For some reason, Bill took umbrage (no, he was REALLY PO'd) at my
forwarding his quite reasonable response to my eMail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
in this reflector. I didn't see anything personal, nasty or even
defensive in his reply to me, and I posted it to the Reflector in its
entirety, without comment one way or the other.

Of course, I sent my original question to the LEAGUE, and not to Bill
personally. Since the LEAGUE is OUR association, I didn't give a
second thought to printing the LEAGUE'S response to this question and
subsequent discussion here.

In fact, some of you have since privately eMailed me thanking me for
publishing the League's response.

Apparently, I should have been more discreet and paraphrased the
response instead of quoting it.

My apologies to Bill for, if nothing else, bringing him into this discussion.

Additionally, because of my many years of professional typesetting
experience, I have also sent Bill a few suggestions as to how MUCH
more data may be fit into less space. I have never seen any Yearbook
that didn't list the members of the class, BTW.

I'm done with this subject. Bill can ream me out personally the next
time I bring a batch of cards up to Newington (hello, BS7H).

[DX-CHAT] Best BS7H quote

2007-05-06 Thread harris_ruben
The BEST quote, as reported by the XYL, was me waking her up when I
yelled (on the last day)...

FINALLY!

The irony of it all is that today, 12 hours after they shut down, the
openings from the East coast to the far East was... superb. Hong
Hong, China, Korea ... all booming in. A day late and a dollar short.

And my station is modest (to me). An Explorer-14 at 50', a venerable
FT-990, and a kilowatt. Oh yeah, a voice-saving digital voice keyer
(which also kept the noise in the house down to a minimum).

Personally, I don't think this rockpile belongs on the list, and
wouldn't be surprised if it's eventually removed.

And congratulations to all who were in there trying, whether getting
through or not. That's DX.

[DX-CHAT] tuning or memories?

2007-05-02 Thread harris_ruben
The BS7H spots on 20 fone seem to indicate that this morning's op was
just punching memory freqs and doing little tuning. Of course, that's
his option.

Give or take a couple of Hz, 200, 210, 220 and 227 seemed to gather
almost all of the spots, as did three more freqs well outside the
announced listening area.

Of course, most contacts aren't spotted, so the sample is not
particularly large, but... it IS curious.

[DX-CHAT] mea culpa, I guess

2007-04-30 Thread harris_ruben

I have been duly told off.

I think that a split listening area from 200 - 225 is way too big.

I think that FEWER ops were calling on the TX frequency (for a
change) but the cops (wherever they came from) made things much worse
(as usual).

I agree that worldwide internet packet HAS made DXing more difficult.
I don't know if that's good or bad.

I DO understand propagation; I've been DXing for 24 years. At least I
heard the station -- that's better than most of my friends here in NJ
could do.

And, I wasn't whining. I was only stating my own opinion of the
operation so far. I hope it improves. Yes, I expect to get through
(one of the benefits of being retired).

End of apology.

I saw that Boston callout. No way, Jose.

My station -- not too puny --had ZERO copy when
that Boston call came out. Pure BS IMO.
The best I heard 'em was 52. Our Italian friends
played cops on 20 meters. Someone even yelled at
ME (when I was working split at 14201) yelling
directly at ME! (on the DX freq 14185) N2ERN -
working ones -- long after they were calling
twos. What lids!!! You could just puke! At least
I was in the split range!!

I'll still be in there, but my band is 18 -- and
I expect (hope) to work 'em there.

I am not by any means a newcomer to DX, but THIS
is worse than ever -- and no one can blame the US
lids for it!!! Call by numbers is fine -- as long
as WE can hear what numbers the DX is calling!!.

Shame on the world's hams!!

[DX-CHAT] QSLs

2007-03-06 Thread harris_ruben
Of COURSE we send money along with our QSL cards with the expectation
of a return -- IF we are in your log. It ISN'T a bribe. It's to cover
your card, logging and postage expenses. Anything over that is a
gift, and we don't expect or want a refund for any unused portion.

If we sent a donation BEFORE a trip, it would be just that -- a
donation, and we would NOT expect a card in return -- but we WOULD
QSL separately with another GS or two to cover the QSLing expense
and, so long as we are in the log, expect a card in return.

No sir. When you get a card with a contact that's in your log, plus a
buck or two, you ARE obligated (in my book) to return one to me, with
that same contact confirmed.

Maybe. I have a Hy-Gain DB-1217 at 60' on 17, my favorite band, an
Explorer-14 at 50', plus an AL 1500 behind it. I worked The
Montenegro easiest on 40 CW with 100W to a rotatable dipole, and I
can barely just copy my call and get a reply back on CW.

I'm really surprised at that. I have a Force 12 2/2/1 (5.5 dBd on
both bands and rot. dipole on 30), fed with an AL-1200. I can
usually slam through anything in under 4 or 5 calls here in NJ. Took
5 calls to Swains on 17 last night. I'm running a C31XR at 70' or so
for 10-15-20, and even on 20, I'm usually able to get in in under
1/2 an hour. Are you in a valley or something?

Methinks Peter misunderstands. My poor CW skills make it quite a
challenge to work anything in that mode, although I can usually make
out N2ERN at just about any speed. I can pretty much do whatever I
need to do from my NJ QTH on top of the Watchungs, esp. on 17. I
rarely put the amp on for any CW attempts because I'm just terrible
at copying it. No excuses or complaints about my station here. But I
still need BS7H, P5 and Swains. I heartily recommend the Hy-Gain
DB-1217, though. It's one heluva piece of aluminum!!

[DX-CHAT] I take it all back

2006-07-30 Thread harris_ruben
You CAN work new DX with nothing. Here I am, at my Summer home, and
I hear KH8SI (55) on my 17M sort-of-inverted-vee that went up
yesterday, and I picked a quiet spot and... worked a new one on 100 w.

The bands ARE open. It's just that no one is on them.

[DX-CHAT] KH8SI - how long?

2006-07-29 Thread harris_ruben
I'm away from the shack so I REALLY have no chance of working 'em.
I've hunted the web, but can't find how long they expect to be there
(3 days or so??)

Who's go the skinny on this trip?

[DX-CHAT] No, I didn't work a pirate.

Title: No, I didn't work a pirate.

This is from the ARRL site
Montenegro International DX Festival ready to roll (Jul 18, 2006)
-- Radio amateurs and equipment from all over Europe and from a few
countries outside the continent are already converging on Montenegro
for the International DX Festival. Among the nearly four dozen
operators already recruited are ARRL CEO David Sumner, K1ZZ, and his
wife Linda, KA1ZD. Using the call sign 4O3NT and operating from
several sites ( see one in photo), the DX special event was conceived as a way
to introduce the new Republic of Montenegro to the worldwide DX
community. Operation gets under way July 20 and will run until August
13. Look for 4O3NT on or about these frequencies: CW: 1826.5, 3522,
7022, 10,106, 14,022, 18,072, 21,022, 24,892 and 28,022 kHz; SSB:
3795, 7055, 14,190, 18,145, 21,290, 24,945 and 28,490 kHz; RTTY: 7035,
10,135, 14,085, 18,105, 21,085 and 28,085 kHz; 6 meters, CW/SSB:
50,106 kHz. While the DX operation will be the most visible part of
the festival, some participants also will conduct meetings with local
telecom authorities and help the Amateur Radio Union of Montenegro
gain International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) membership. Yaesu, SteppIR, Acom
and the Northern California DX Foundation have supplied equipment for
the event. There's still room for more operators, especially during
the second and third weeks of the event. Contact YT6A (with a copy to OH2BH). QSL via YT6A.
