[DX-CHAT] VU4 QSL's?
Anyone heard any news about VU4 QSL cards? Specifically VU4AN/VU3OHA or VU4AN/VU3RWO. It has been 8 weeks+. Should be getting close. Just curious. Thanks, Garth, KW4MM
[DX-CHAT] VU4/VU3CHE report 2
Friday afternoon over here in VU4 Did some shopping while bands were filled with other VU4ANs I will continue to try mostly WARC bands. The new ROOF on Hotel Sinclairs is very slippery and steep... big change from Dec 2004 when it was ideal So ants will not be tweeked... hi hi. We know of the demands and are trying... thanks to all who stand by when a partial call is called-out... there is no help for doing parials due to noise and other VU4ANs plugging away. Best of luck to all 73 Charles Harpole [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

[DX-CHAT] VU4/VU3CHE interim report
Hello from Andaman3 days into the event Good news... lots of attendees from India and otherwise and gud hamfest sessions. Vy good political connections made. Bad news... lots lots lots of interstation QRM... the RTTY boys's xmitter can be hrd on all bands and multiple places on all bands, otherwise, the other stations can cope with. I am running IC-706 and G5RV and Cushcraft roto-dipole D3W for WARC all on one pole on the roof of the Sinclairs Hotel... same place as last time. Only now there are other stations xmitting here also and the IMD blocking is severe. Many times my rcvr just shuts down ... so if u are working me, pardon this RF intense environment over here. There was no cocordination between locations for stations, op times, nor nothing. Bandpass filters are worthless hr. BUT, I am having a great time!! See u all on the bands, de VU4AN/VU3CHE My direct QSL route is on GO list with mail to Thailand HS buro also is best for me. 73 Charles Harpole [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

For something like VU4 or similar other-side-of-the-world ultra-rare DX, it mostly comes down to a combination of propagation, skill, your ERP and your receiving equipment. If you have no propagation, nothing will help. All the skill in the world won't help if you're competing with 50,000 other signals who are massively stronger and equally skilled, and none of it will matter if your receiver and/or antenna is so poor that you don't hear the DX coming back to you! But at the end of the day, it's a two-way street and if the DX isn't listening for weaker signals and you're in the wrong part of the world, that contact probably isn't going to happen unless you have some way to get his attention. - Original Message - From: LA5HE Ragnar Otterstad [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 5:03 pm Subject: RE: [DX-CHAT] VU4 I think of more importance to those of us on my side of the pond is the preponderance of operators from Europe who may have a different focus than east coast and central North America, arguably the most challenging location for VU4 signals. FAQ answers about QSL to VU4 2004 operations: All requests for QSLs go to NIAR via the NIAR web site instructions. Donations that often accompany QSL requests could be mis-directed by postal workers somewhere along the delivery route from you to NIAR. Anything is possible. Thus, my personal advice is for the QSL sender to send to NIAR only the QSL card(s) and a self-addressed return envelopALONG WITH A NOTE THAT A DONATION IS BEING MADE TO THE VU4 DXPEDITION VIA DERA, in Colorado, USA. Then, those who wish to donate can follow the instructions on the NIAR web site relative to donations via DERA. DERA accepts credit cards and other forms of remittance and is proven a safe way to transmit funds to NIAR and the DXpedition. Donations via DERA should be clearly marked For the NIAR VU4 DXpedition, 2004. Your choice about using registered mail or regular mail. I have no access to the VU4 logs nor in special entre to help any one with QSL requests. QSLing is totally in the competent hands of NIAR. 73, Charly VU3CHE and K4VUD Charles Harpole [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

Re: [DX-CHAT] vu4 log again
Hello guys: Yes No record found 1n our VU4 Log really means number of records found in our VU4 Log and after that you find in algarisms the number of qsos with your call sign on VU4 log. So if you have 1 qso it must shows No records found in our VU4 Log 1. The qso listed below your call and your address refers to the qsl card they received or the qso you asked for with your qsl and NOT what they can find on the log. So in the case of W3JJ, I'm sorry to say that he isn't on the log. 73s Fred - PY7ZZ - Original Message - From: Tony Martin W4FOA [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Kenneth Sobel [EMAIL PROTECTED]; dx-chat@njdxa.org Sent: Wednesday, March 09, 2005 9:31 PM Subject: Re: [DX-CHAT] vu4 log again Ken, If you drop down to the bottom of the page, you will see your QSO data for W3JJ 23/12/2004 20 SSB with VU4RBI. [DX-CHAT] VU4 Harpole Interview
UCF professor survives, relays messages to world The earthquake hit with the popping of concrete, screeching of twisting metal and the thudding sounds of bottles, books and bits of plaster falling from the shelves and walls of Charles Harpole's hotel room. I knew that I'd either be dead in a few seconds because the building would crash down or I'd get out and be fine, the vacationing University of Central Florida professor said early Friday. There was that sense of finality. Harpole and other members of a ham-radio club were just north of the quake's epicenter on the picturesque Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal between India and Thailand. It was 6:30 a.m. Sunday, when Harpole was shaken from his bed to discover the walls of his room shaking and the floor turned to jelly. I was on the fifth floor, and it was difficult to walk because the floor was shifting. It was either too high or too low, he said in a telephone interview from the home of his wife's family in Samut Sakhon, Thailand. Harpole said he knew the safest place to be was beneath a doorway, so he made his way to the bathroom doorway and held on for what seemed like six or seven minutes of shaking in the 9.0-magnitude earthquake. When things finally settled, Harpole got dressed and fled the building, discovering to his joy that everyone in his party has escaped uninjured. Because their hotel was on a high mountain ridge, Harpole said, it wasn't affected by the tsunami. But as he and his team realized the scope of the disaster, they set up their radio equipment and started relaying messages. For about 20 hours, the ham operators -- sometimes using car batteries to run their radios -- were the main link between the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the outside world, relaying information about survivors to anxious relatives and friends. And with most telephone lines down and cell phones scarce, the ham-radio club's efforts proved invaluable as the scope of the disaster increased day after day. The first messages were to let people on the Indian mainland know that those on the island were safe and unharmed. A young waiter at Harpole's hotel asked them to get word to his mother in Hyderabad, India, that he was alive and well. We found a ham-radio operator on the mainland, gave the mother's telephone number, Harpole said. Within five minutes a ham operator in Hyderabad called the waiter's mother and relayed the message. He told us the mother was crying with joy, he said. Harpole's group cheered and clapped. Word spread quickly across the island, and their work went on for hours and hours. When Indian government officials learned of the hamradio operators, they relayed messages for official requests for medicines, water and blankets. Several of the radio operators headed south to Nicobar. Harpole decided it was time for him to head to Thailand for a reunion with his wife and her family who were safely inland. I was concerned, that this being an Indian operation and here I was this American, I should step aside, he said. At his in-laws' house, he had his own radio equipment and has been relaying messages throughout Thailand, India and Sri Lanka. People are asking, 'Can you find so-and-so,' and so forth, he said. Harpole, an amateur-radio enthusiast since he was 14, had been working for years with fellow enthusiasts in India to get permission to set up a station on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which consist of 572 islands, big and small, inhabited and uninhabited. Amateur-radio buffs collect calls from geographic zones, trying to reach remote parts of the world and put pins in maps to mark the locations. But because of the Indian government's concern for security, a swath of the globe had been off-limits until Harpole and his friends persuaded the leaders to lift the ban. About two weeks ago, Harpole and his friends arrived in the harbor town of Port Blair to set up the first ham-radio station and lounge on the tropical, white, sandy beaches. It was an idyllic holiday until the quake hit. Harpole, who founded the film program at UCF, expects to be back in Orlando soon. He said that the devastation throughout the Indian Ocean rim is hard to comprehend. The full toll may never be known. That's because many rural island and coastal villages never had a census, and for some of those places, there isn't anyone left alive to say how many people had lived there, he said. Many islands were washed completely over from one side to the other. I've seen horrible, horrible destruction, Harpole said. It's shocking beyond the telling. Piles of cars, broken buildings and boats where there used to be towns and people. The stories from people being hit by the wave -- so unexpected. People having coffee, and then they're gone. [DX-CHAT] VU4 signal strength
On Thursday ( Dec. 02 ) between 2050 and 2115 UTC, VU4RBI was aneasily readable S-7( SP) in central NC on 14.201 Mhz. I was fortunate enough to work her at 2100. She faded rapidly after 2120 and the signal was gone by 2130, although I understand she worked some EU after then. The couple of times I've heard themsince then the signal has only been S-2 or 3. I could hear the JA' s replying to them on 15 metersthis evening, but no signalat all from the VU4. Let' s hope for some better propagation. Good luck, 73, Kent - K4MK

[DX-CHAT] VU4
It sounds like the most practical approach might be for some Indian national(s) to attempt to get a member or members of the Indian Military interested in Amateur Radio. That would likely eliminate the licensing problems, and possibly provide ongoing activity. As for instant gratification being the reason to delete countries, I'm not sure that is entirely the case. It's kinda like owning a spark gap transmitter. It no longer has any practical application. If it were a lead pipe cinch that ZL9 would never be activated again, then it is similar in nature to the spark gap transmitter. The dilemma is that while we know that the spark gap transmitter will never again have a practical application, we can not be sure that never really means never in the case of ZL9, and this is what drives the attitude of the DXCC committee. To a great extent, our perspective on these issues is driven by our own positions. I have both KP1 and KP5 confirmed, yet do not have ZL9, VU4, or BS7. Having KP1 and KP5 confirmed means only that I am getting old and have been chasing DX for a long time. As for the others, they have all been activate in my lifetime, and unfortunately I was out chasing the all mighty dollar at the time. Chasing the all mighty dollar didn't turn out like I had hoped, and it cost me the opportunity to work the DX that I needed/wanted. That's the way it happened, heading west. (that will reveal my age to many of you)
Re: [DX-CHAT] VU4
If you can get a License from the Indian Telecom and the permit from the Indian Wildlife for such an operation, then you will succed. 73 Jose CT1EEB I'm confused about the reasons VU4 can not be considered a candidate for activation, or is this true? Looking on the internet, I see that area promoted as a great tourist spot. Looking at the photos on the various web pages, it would seem that it would be an ideal spot for a Dx-Pedition. I also see that apparently there was an operation from there in 1997. What's the catch?
