Re: [DX-NEWS] LOTW still off-line
I am convinced they have crashed several times in recent months. There's no way to know since they are secretive about what goes on up there. It seems that when there is a large volume of uploads, they tend to fail which probably means inadequate capacity and/or bugs. Larry, Because the system was unavailable a couple of weekends ago. I did an upload early Friday evening. Then another a little later. The first one got processed, the second not until Monday late morning. To me, a systems manager, that's a clear sign things crashed and got restarted when people came in to start the week Monday morning. I can document the times but why go there. They clearly need to overhaul that system. I am a big supporter of ARRL but at times I wonder what goes on in Newington. This resulted in the system shut down. Although additional storage has been added because the two databases (LotW and DXCC) crashed the databases have to be rebuilt. Unfortunately, the ARRL, when it originally created LotW a proprietary database program unique to LotW was created. Why? I don't know write to your ARRL Director and demand an explanation. In any case I am lead to believe that as soon as the database is rebuilt access will resume. My contact assured me that no log data was lost as multiple backup are made - it remains to be seen how true this is. What is important about this incident is it would seem, as some have expressed, that monitoring LotW is not a priority. Communications by ARRL members to their specific ARRL DIRECTOR will have the most impact on elevating LotW to a higher lever of support and attention. Re: RE: [DX-NEWS] LOTW still off-line
Look guys... I know that Logbook being down is unfortuante, and it's a pain, but things like this happen sometimes, despite the best intentions, procedures, precautions, and backups. Just ask any other IT professional... we've all dealt with situations like this (or worse) at one time or another, given enough time in the field. Wild speculation isn't going to help any. It is unfortunate that DX World published the claim that ~45% of recent data had been lost -- and I don't blame MM0NDX for publishing it, as he received the alleged story from two or more sources. But pending accurate information from the League to the contrary, I would take any such claim (especially one that vague) with a huge grain of salt. Now with that all in mind... maybe the time has come to upgrade the LotW servers related infrastructure. And the user interface could certainly use a little sprucing up, it's age is showing (though granted, it's clearly designed to be functional, not pretty). These things can cost money... lots of money. (Even if you, as a web designer, donate your time, your time is has value to it). So I'd humbly suggest that you start thinking of ways to improve the system, and ways to present them in a positive way to the League... and that may include outright cash donations or other fund raisers. That strikes me as a more positive exercise that wringing our hands, going oh woe is us! LotW is down and otherwise acting like the proverbial Chicken Little. 73, ron w3wn --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. Lack of communication from ARRL is the problem. There is no excuse for not making a comment on the ARRL website. That would eliminate all kind suspicions. Go to Staten Island there are hundreds of people who just lost EVERYTHING they own and are sleeping is houses (or on the street) with no heat. Ham radio is a HOBBY. Let's not forget that point. Re: [DX-NEWS] LOTW still off-line
ARRL Information Technology Manager Michael Keane, K1MK, is reporting that while Logbook of The World (LoTW http://www.arrl.org/logbook-of-the-world) system is currently down, it is expected to be back up by 9 AM EST (1400 UTC) on Friday, November 9. While the system is temporarily down, radio amateurs are not able to access LoTW or upload their logs, Keane explained. No data has been lost, and everyone's records are intact. We understand the problem and we are in the process of restoring service to LoTW. Since both the Logbook of The World service and the Online DXCC http://www.arrl.org/news/online-dxcc-application-to-debut-april-2 service are connected to the ARRL Awards System, radio amateurs are not able to access either service until the system is restored. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and want to assure the amateur community that the ARRL is working diligently to restore service to these popular programs. From the ARRL Letter...
