[Dx4win] how I found STATE info for US calls!
Hi Tonno et al, Many thanks for the nice tip. I´ve saved a zipped DXL file with all those US calls. The file size is 2.371 Mbytes. If anyone has a site to host it please drop me a line, I can send it. 73 DX de PY2YP - Cesar - Original Message - From: Tonno Vahk [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: DX4WIN reflector dx4win@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, February 25, 2003 11:13 AM Subject: [Dx4win] how I found STATE info for US calls! | I was dreaming for some time of an automated way to get STATE info for all | the US calls in my DX4WIN log (c.a. 4000) and US calls in my TRMASTER.DTA | (some 22 000) for ARRL contest. I did not consider looking them up one by | one from QRZ.COM an option:) | | I found that ane uptodate database of all current US calls is available from | FCC FTP site: | ftp://ftp.fcc.gov/pub/Bureaus/Wireless/Databases/uls/complete/ | File named l_amat.zip contains a text file named EN.txt that has wide | range of information including STATE for about 850 000 US and possessions | calls. It's size is around 100 Megs. | | I downloaded it, imported into ACCESS, sorted out necessary info (call and | state) and exported it into text file. Then I imported this text file into | DX4WIN - to my satisfaction it handled 850 000 QSOs quite well:) I removed | all the possession calls and changed DC into MD for WAS. I also removed | those calls that had no STATE info - there is a small number in the FCC | database. After that I changed the date of all those around 800 000 QSOs to | 1990 - that is before any of my actual QSOs. | | No I merged my old Log File (23 000 qsos) with the existing large FCC File | and did Multiple QSO Operations - Set US States. There were only some 200 | (5%) of my US calls that did not get STATE info. Mostly because they are | previous calls and not in FCC database any more. | | No I thought the easiest way to get rid of the FCC calls would be to Filter | them out and Delete. Well, deleting 800 000 QSOs from the Log took c.a. 7-8 | hours on 1066 MHz Pentium III:))) But I had some time so I let it do it | altough there might have been easier ways to get rid of those QSOs. So | Deleting was the only problem DX4WIN had when handling that kind of a QSO | count! | | Now - how to get STATEs into TRMASTER? I imported TRMASTER US calls through | text file into an empty DX4WIN log File and set the QSO date after the QSO | date of the large FCC Log File. Then I merged the two and SET STATES for | TRMASTER calls. Then Filtered out TRMASTER calls and Exported them back to | text File with States. I added DC to 12 DC calls manually. No it was easy to | run POST.EXE and add this STATE info to TRMASTER.DTA as USER 2 info. | | I hope that somebody finds my discovery and ideas useful:) At least I was | very thrilled and decided to let you know about the way I did it:) | | 73 | tonno | es5tv | | ___ | Dx4win mailing list | Dx4win@mailman.qth.net | http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win |

I mean, any kind of tape or something like that? Any impression will be very much welcome. The ansewers: 1 - I've been thinking the same thing, especially having been in the barcode industry for a few years. Direct thermal stock does not generally have a long shelf life to begin with, and I also worry about what will happen in 10+ years to all those QSLs with the nice labels attached to them. Has anyone put some heat on these labels to simulate what will happen over time? 1. Leave in direct sunlight for a day or so? 2. Leave on top of your nice and warm tube amp? 3. Try to write on the label with a hot soldering iron? I couldn't easily find anything regarding lifespan of these labels on the Dymo web site. Cesar, Can you summarize the responses and reply to the list? Thanks, Cliff K3LL/6 2 - Hi Cesar, I'm agree with K3LL/6 about the lifetime of this type of labels (I used a fax machine with this type of printing long time ago and, few months after we receive the fax, it was impossible to read it) and don't forget the price of a labels roll. It's more and more expensive than a box of sheets with adhesive labels. With this printer you print only labels not other type of document. Yes, it's a pretty nice printer but I'm not sure it's a good choice in a ham shack. 73 Alain, F5LIW 3 - Cesar, I am using the Dymo 400 and I LOVE it. [Dx4win] Merging logs
Hi Paul, The best way to merge different calls is to set a group number for each one, however, the group 0 (zero) is set to all callsigns, e.g., all the statics will refer to all calls. Every time you run the DX4WIN, by default, the group is set to group 0. When selecting a group, say, group 2 for F6EXV/FO for example, you will have the statics for this call only and will print cards for this call only. Analogue, you will have same results for group 3, say, F6EXV/KH8 and so on. As I said the group 0 will reflect the statistics for all calls: F6EXV + F6EXV/FO + F6EXV/KH8 + ... Of course you may want all the statics for F6EXV only. In this case you must have a log for this call not adding any other call from different DXCC country. In the case you have had another French call, say, F9EXV you may set a group for this one among F6EXV log. Setting group numbers may look a little bit complicated but once you read the manual it is quite simple. I use the group number feature for several previous and contest calls, all of them from the DXCC country with very good results. Very practical, to say the least. In my opinion this is the best solution for your problem. 73 DX de PY2YP - Cesar on 10/9/2007 18:11 F6EXV wrote the following: Hi all ! Hi Randy, I do second your very accurate review. I've found the same CW problems; yes, should be nice to change the asterisk in the reports and get back the listing report to the version 7 format as well. 73 DX de PY2YP - Cesar Randy Farmer wrote: I downloaded and had a look at the new version today. I don't yet have my license key, but I was able to import my version 7 log and check out some of the new features. Importing the Version 6/7 format log file into Version 8 was absolutely trouble free. I did have to re-do some of my custom Logbook Report formats to account for the new fields, but this was no problem at all. All of my Selections and Group definitions imported perfectly. I'm especially glad to see the improvements to the LOTW record keeping and the elimination of the need to explicitly filter the log by date selection to get accurate DXCC CW statistics. The testing I've done so far has concentrated on checking out the DXCC CW reporting. Unfortunately, I have found some problems. I have around 56K QSOs in my log, the vast majority being CW. The log files go back to 1965, so there are a good many CW QSOs in the log that were made prior to being eligible for CW DXCC credit. Some of these have been submitted for Mixed and Band DXCC credit. I also keep track of my DXCC records using a fairly elaborate Excel spreadsheet and make sure it's updated every time the DX4WIN log changes and/or I receive new DXCC credits from ARRL. My standard procedure is to do a quick compare of the DX4WIN DXCC Summary reports against this spreadsheet each time after importing LOTW data or making any other changes to the log. I checked out the Version 8 DXCC Summary reports and found right away that regardless of the selection made in the dropdown boxes the Summary report ALWAYS gives the stats for All Bands / All Modes. The good news is that these stats are completely accurate, including the CW numbers. I tried all combinations of the Modes and Bands dropdown choices and always got the All modes / All bands report. I then took a look at the Listing reports for various band and mode combinations. To use the Listings data, I use the Write to File option to dump the report data to csv format to import into Excel. It's disappointing that while the Listing report format has changed slightly, it STILL uses the asterisk (*) character to designate Checked status. The asterisk is a special wild card character in Excel, and directly importing the csv file makes it impossible to edit and manipulate the data -- weird things happen. This means I still need to first run the csv file through Wordpad or some similar text editor to do a search and replace of the asterisk with some other character so I can use the file in Excel. It would be real nice if the report output used some other character to show Checked status. All of the DXCC reports except for CW were completely correct. There were multiple discrepancies for CW DXCC, which upon close examination all turned out to be the result of counting pre-1975 QSOs for CW credit. If these old records were excluded from the statistics, the CW report would be totally accurate. I have taken great care in setting the Mixed, Band and Mode credit flags for these older QSOs in the log file, and none has the Mode credit flag set, yet the report claimed that they were credited for CW. Apparently the internal logic of the program looks at neither the QSO date nor the status of the DXCC Mode flag when it generates the DXCC report. So we're almost there... The Summary gets the CW statistics correct, so there's clearly some logic that runs on QSO date, but it's obviously incompletely implemented. Also regarding the Listing report, when including Deleted entities the new version sorts its output in alphabetical Prefix order without regard for whether the prefix is for a Deleted entity or not. The older versions put all the Deleteds in alphabetical order at the bottom of the prefix list, a MUCH better way to present the data. I had to immediately re-sort the imported csv files to get them in the same order as the data from Version 7. Please restore the Version 8 Listing report to the same format as the Version 7 and earlier listings! There is also some sort of internal coding error that caused me a bit of hair pulling. For some reason, while the prefix for Minami Torishima is JD1/M, the Listing report renders it as JD1/W and thus interchanges the lines for Minami Torishima and Ogasawara, JD1/O. It was no fun dealing with this until I took a close look at the report and saw the incorrect prefix. Apart from these small problems, I like the looks of the enhancements to this new version of DX4WIN. I'm looking forward to getting my license key and doing more testing with live hardware. Thanks to Paul for a significant improvement in this new generation
[Dx4win] Invalid value
I know that is not needed to import the DXL file from the version 7, just copy it to the SAVE directory and it is done, but... I exported the DXL file using the 7 version, opened the 8 version, created a brand new log file and imported the log from DXQ DXN files. Using the version 7 I need 3 countries in 20 meters, say: P5, FT5W and KP1. The version 8.01 said that I only need FT5 and KP1. I carefull checked the differences to find out that the I flag in the DXCC fields (Mixed, band and mode) were not flagged. Somehow, the importation procedure ignored the invalid value in the ValidDX field in the 7 version. To be sure about that I did generate a report, using the 7 version, producing 51 invalid QSOs; none of them does appear in the version 8. Of course I can manually enter the I value in the proper fields, which I will do, but I think there is a little problem to be fixed. -- 73 DX de PY2YP - Cesar __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Dx4win] Other QSOs - Query
I think the text below may help people to assign a group. For 2010 statistics only: 1. Insert a group name in FILTER | EDIT GROUP NAMES - Press ADD. The number 000 will show up in the upper window, type in narrow window just below: ALL QSOs then press CHANGE. - Press ADD again. The 001 ALL QSOs will appear in upper window. In the narrow window overwrite ALL QSOs typing 2010 QSOs then press change. - Press OK to complete this phase. 2. Select FILTER | SELECTION - Press ADD - In CURRENT SELECTION window click REPLACE THIS NAME; - In GROUP NAME window double click the 2010 QSOs, a small X will appear it will look like this: 000 ALL QSOs x 001 QSOs em 2001 - In CURRENT SELECTION window change REPLACE THIS NAME to 2010 QSOs - In DATE FILTER window fill in FIRST DATE: 01/01/2010 - In ENABLE FILTERS windows select the DATE FILTER option - Press UPDATE then OK. The log now ill only present the statistics regarding to the year of 2010. To have the complete log back, just go to FILTER | SELECTION | CURRENT SELECTION and double click ALL QSOs. In case you need statistics for a specif date range just repeat the entire process filling the FIRST DATE and LAST DATE. The GROUP 000 is the default group so every time that the DX4WIN starts the complete log is selected. 73 DX de PY2YP - Cesar Mel wrote: As I suggested... use a new group... the old 256 limit for groups is now gone AFAIK... [Dx4win] FT1000MPMkV
Something very weird had happened; I have the following setup: DX4WIN 8.05 FT-1000MP Mark V Field CPU Intel I7 920 @ 2.67GHz Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM1) adapter Windows 7 64bit Home Premium Until tomorrow everything worked as expected and I haven't noticed any problem at all. However, I've just found out that the DX4WIN is no longer reading frequency and mode from the radio when adding QSO in real time and not reading the radio frequency control (shift F12) as well. When clicking at a spot the QSO window receives everything OK from the DX spot window, however, after 1 or 2 seconds the MODE and BAND fields change to their default values (CW, 40m). I have tried everything that come to my mind: restored the CFG and INI files from the backup; restored FT1000MPMkV.rig file from the backup; re-installed the DX4W and started from the scratch; updated the Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port driver; changed the comm port values; tried with the 8.04 version, which also worked before with no results. Then, at final attempt, I changed the radio set from FT1000MPMkV to FT1000MP and there it is working fine again. The question is: Can I stay using FT1000MP.rig with FT-1000MP Mark V Field without any risk? What are the differences between FT1000MPMkV.rig and FT1000MP.rig functionalities, I mean, keep using FT1000MP.rig I will loose any functionality? [Dx4win] QR-Code
On behalf of the author, PY1KN, a suggestion that should be considered to the wish list. 73 de PY2YP - Cesar Automated QSL reading -- a suggestion for software developers Marcelo Gomes -- PY1KN ARRL's LOTW is a great thing, saving a lot of work for managers of large dx-peditions or big contest stations, as well as active Dxers. However, paper QSL cards are not going to disappear anytime soon. Whenever I receive a bunch of QSL cards from the bureau, I have to manually enter the other station callsign in my logging software and look for matches in my logbook. Then I can take appropriate action, marking the QSO as confirmed and marking a QSL for printing. If you receive a large batch it can take many hours. There must be a better way. Nowadays QR-codes have become ubiquitous, as its an easy way to create free format machine readable information. So, if in addition to the traditional QSO data lines e can add a QR code with the same information, the logging software could decode and search for matches and take appropriate action. The best solution would be to set a standard way to write the QSO data. I´ve made a simple test, writing 5 QSOs with W1AW, using ; as field separator according to the following pattern: Callsign mmdd ;hh:mm; Mhz; band; mode; RS(T); QSL A sample 5-QSO data in this format would look like W1AW 20120130;00:10;21.025;15M;CW;599;PSE 20120131;01:22;14.185;20M;SSB;59;PSE 20120317;22:12;10.145;30M;RTTY;599;TKS 20120401;10:00;;12M;PSK31;599;PSE 20120718;23:18;7.023;40M;CW;599;PSE Note that the 4^th QSO has no frequency info, just the band. In this case the blank fiels results in 2 adjacent separators (;;) The resulting QR-Code image is example would be: This image could be added to my outgoing QSL to W1AW. A QSL printing service like GlobalQSL could generate it automatically from the QSO data uploaded and print it directly in the card. The printing routines of the logging programs could include the option to print it on a blank space of the card, or on a label, A QR-image can hold up to 255 characters, if we consider typical line with the formatting I used as holding 36 characters, there is space to easily fit 8 QSOs in the image. I have tried to use a leaner format, eliminating the frequency information, the hour-minute separator (:), the M abbreviation in the band and use only P or T for QSL status, link the example below, but the gain is not relevant, especially if we consider that plain text information also has to appear in the card. In practice, we don't see more than 7 QSO lines in a card. WIAW 20120401;1000;160;RTTY;599;P (example of more condensed formatting) The first software developer who jumps into this will set the standard. Maybe we don't need the frequency information, maybe we can just write P or T for the QSL PSE or TKS. Time will tell if this idea evolves. -- 73 DX de PY2YP - Cesar __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Yes, it works very well; I did exactly you write a few days ago. I wonder if there is any way to mix together the mode and band ADIF files but I can upload the files separetly without any problem. I also have some misunderstanding how the ARRL online application does sort the application. I did try sorting the ADIF file either by call or by date and got the same result from the site, I think the site application has its own default, am I right? HNY to all. 73 DX de PY2YP - Cesar On 31/12/2012 20:19, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote: Before I left for a week of vacation (back now), I found a relatively painless way to generate a card-only DXCC application in ADIF format. I plan to document this elsewhere, but wanted to present it here, before I forgot. I'm sorry that it's probably too late to make the 12/31 annual listing deadline for most people. Please make sure of the following: 1. You have downloaded your Logbook of the World confirmations from the ARRL LoTW web site, and imported these into DX4WIN (LoTW | Import from LoTW). 2. You DXCC award is configured for both QSL card and LoTW confirmations. You can do this via the Reports menu, then by clicking on the Awards button at the bottom-right of the Report generator window. 3. You are using the DX4WIN award flags to track Checked (approved) and Submitted DXCC credits. 4. This method assumes that you will submit all possible LoTW confirmations for credit, and only QSLs for which you do not have a LoTW confirmation. In other words, if you are trying to save money by submitting as many QSL cards as possible, and thus as few LoTW confirmations as possible, this method isn't for you. There are two ways to do this: the systematic way, or the brute-force way. Systematic way: 1. Perform a DXCC submission through the ARRL Logbook of the World web site. This will submit all of your electronic confirmations. 2. Manually change the correspond DXCC award flags to Submitted for each credit submitted through the LoTW web site. After this is done, it is a good time to save your DX4WIN log. 3. Perform a DXCC submission in DX4WIN, via the Reports menu. You can save or print the submission report, but you really don't need it. (continue at #4 below) Brute-force way: 1. Perform a DXCC submission through the ARRL Logbook of the World web site. This will submit all of your electronic confirmations. 2. Perform a DXCC submission in DX4WIN, via the Reports menu. You can save or print the submission report, but you really don't need it. 3. Adjust the DXCC award flags so that the same QSOs that were submitted for credit via LoTW are marked as Submitted in DX4WIN. This may mean that some QSOs confirmed by paper QSL no longer need to be marked as Submitted. At this point, all of the confirmations you want to submit will be marked as Submitted in DX4WIN. Now you want to identify those for which you need to submit QSL cards. 4. Depending on the type of DXCC credits you will be submitting, you may need to create up to three ADIF files - one for DXCC Mixed, one for DXCC Mode, and/or for DXCC band. Make sure your QSO window is expanded to show the Award flags (use F5 until you see them). 4a. For DXCC Mixed submissions, perform an F8 search. You will want to search for 'Y' in the Cnfm field on the line that starts with Label, 'N' in the Cnfm field on the line that starts with LoTW, and 'S' in the Award flags in the DXCC column, Mixed row. If the search reports No matching QSO found, then continue on to step 4b below. Otherwise, in the main DX4WIN menu, File | Import/Export. You should see the Import/Export Filters window, and the ADIF row should be highlighted. In this window, choose File | Export from the menu. DX4WIN will ask if you want to use the current filter. Answer Yes. Save the resulting ADIF file to something like 2012_MIXED.adi. 4b. For DXCC Band submissions, perform an F8 search. You will want to search for 'Y' in the Cnfm field on the line that starts with Label, 'N' in the Cnfm field on the line that starts with LoTW, and 'S' in the Award flags in the DXCC column, Band row. If the search reports No matching QSO found, then continue on to step 4c below. Otherwise, in the main DX4WIN menu, File | Import/Export. You should see the Import/Export Filters window, and the ADIF row should be highlighted. In this window, choose File | Export from the menu. DX4WIN will ask if you want to use the current filter. Answer Yes. Save the resulting ADIF file to something like 2012_BAND.adi. 4c. For DXCC Mode submissions, perform an F8 search. Re: [Dx4win] Utility program: LoTW Credits to DX4Win Awards
I did endorse only via LOTW late December, the paper application will be sent this month, so I had this problem: how to change S to C in the DX4WIN once all the Ss included the paper cards Ss as well? I mean: how to change only the Ss referred to LOTW credits to C at once? I found out a very easy and fast procedure. I did as follow: 1. In Change Award Flag I cleared all Ss selecting clear submitted option; 2. In Award Setup for DXCC I cleared the QSL Card box; 3. In Award Generator I selected Submission option. At this point the DX4WIN generated an application form for LOTW credits only, accordingly to the #2 above. 4. In Change Award Flag I changed all the Ss to Cs selecting Submitted - Checked option; 5. In Award Setup for DXCC I checked the QSL Card box; 6. In Award Generator I selected Submission option to restore the Ss related to paper cards application. 73 DX de PY2YP - Cesar On 02/01/2013 00:02, Larry Gauthier (K8UT) wrote: DX4Win can automatically create a list of DXCC QSOs for awards submissions to the ARRL. However, changing those Submitted entries to Checked in your awards table after they are approved by the DXCC desk is a tedious manual process. When purchasing hundreds of LoTW credits recently I vowed that I would write a utility program to enter the credited data back into DX4Win... which is what LoTWCreditToDX4WinAward.exe does. This utility program is difficult to setup and run. It relies upon a feature of the DXLabs DXKeeper program to: reach out to the LoTW website, extract all of your CREDIT history (for both QSL cards and LoTW transactions), compare all of your credit history with your log, and make adjustments where appropriate. It also requires that you export your DX4Win v8 log to a DXQ file, massage it with the utility program, and import the massaged file back into a fresh log in DX4Win. Complicated? Yes. Was there any other way to accomplish the task? ? Not that I could see. Please don't confuse a QSO CONFIRMATION from LoTW (which is what happens when you download an LoTW report and import it into DX4Win) with LoTW CREDIT (which is what happens when you pay money to the ARRL for award credit). The first is easy; the second requires some heavy lifting. If you are feeling adventurous and don't mind installing the DXLabs DXKeeper application suite as part of the process, you will find instructions and the utility program on my website at: http://www.k8ut.com/tiki-index.php?page=LoTW+Credits+-to-+DX4Win+Awards+Utility As I said - this is not easy and I would not encourage computer novices to attempt it. BUT - if you want to compare and update your DX4Win Award Credit records with those from the ARRL, I think this is the only automated game in town. -larry (K8UT) __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 7850 (20130101) __ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Next import all the QSO's into this log. Now you can handle the 2 different logs accordingly or you can merge the two logs. To do the latter, take the following steps: First open the first log (MASTER or N4GG in this example). Next: File | Import | and chose DX4WIN8 I/E and chose from the menu File | Import. Follow the next steps to select your file with the second log and import it. Save the log. Now go to the menu and chose Filter | Edit Group Names (look in the manual how to do this) and give a name to the group numbers. In your case 1 is N4GG and 2 is the other call. Once ready, you will have all calls in one log but you can see for which call the QSO is (assuming you have selected group field in your logbook report. Re: [Dx4win] Dupes
You are right Teijo, a dupe definition is mandatory before thinking about removing. A dupe is a nearly exact time, say a 5 minutes window or precisely the same time, resulting either from typing old logs or importing old logs. Does it mean a dupe like in a contest i.e. a separate contact that has been made on the same band but at a different time? I think that in this case it is a bad idea to remove the dupes from the log. The dupe contact might be the only one that is both in your log and the other stations log. The first occurence might not be in the other stations log at all for some reason (he/she worked somebody else, had a computer glitch etc). On the other hand I have noticed that my log contains some QSOs that are separated only by seconds.
