[Dx4win] Moving Log file

2003-01-29 Thread John Kjos
HI, Sorry for the dumb question, but I am going to download Version 6 on a
new computer when I get my new registration License for it. My question is
what is the best way to move my current log from V5.03 over to the new
computer? Thanks- John W9RPM

[Dx4win] Moving Log file

2003-01-29 Thread Mel Martin
Depends...

You want to copy everything in the Save directory...

If the computers are networked... no problem... just copy to a share...

If the logs are small... use a floppy.. or a series of floppies with Winzip

Large...
If you have a CD Writer, Zip drive or tape... it's simple... But if had
this, you wouldn't have asked...

If the computer is on the internet... send you files to your self as an
attachment with the old computer, then recieve them on the new computer...
good way if they are not enormous...

You can copy disk to disk by temporarily hooking up your old drive to the
new machine... this is how I do it if I don't have a network...

You can transfer using a null modem cable... there are some utilities in
some Windows distributions... I'm not sure about the latest ones... never
looked.

[Dx4win] Moving Log file

Save the entire contents of your present /SAVE directory (folder) and
overwrite the files in the new version /SAVE directory with your present
files. This will maintain your present log as well as the .cty file, which
contains all your log exceptions. It will also save all your present
 preferences and screen positions.

Couple of things to mention here:

1. The Version 5 DX4WIN.CFG file is incompatible with Version 6.
Copying it will do no good. You must go to Preferences in V5
and write the .INI file, then merge this into V6 from the same
menu. Make sure to look at EACH preferences tab after doing
this, as some of the settings don't transfer (like ICOM radio
baud rate). Paul added some new awards flags, and those may
not transfer properly either.

2. There were some changes to the DX4WIN.CTY file to corrrect
county names. You will lose these changes if you over-write
the V6 file with your V5 file. It's best to merge the CTY
files, which DX4WIN should do automatically when you upgrade.

I don't understand the complaint. It's only good practice to copy your log
file from the old version to the new one, so that if anything goes wrong
during the installation you won't lose your data. Merging the .ini files
is something that has been required since day one, while merging the
DX4WIN.CTY allows you to save all those precious exception calls that
you've collected over the years.

It's called an upgrade because of all the new things it does.

I found that after upgrading my callsign/country exceptions weren't brought
to 6.01. Also, with a registered 6.01 I'm unable to look at some of the
databases, they are greyed out in the menu.

[Dx4win] Moving Log file

2003-01-29 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
You can simply install the new version and you are ready to go.

There are four things that most of us want to do, though: 1) Move your old
logbook where the new version will know what was in it and convert it to the
new format. 2) If you wrote out all of your preferences before the upgrade,
they are stored in a file called DX4WIN.ini (or whatever you called it).
When you merge the .ini file, it puts all of your preferences (except those
that were not previously used) into the new program so that you DONT HAVE to
do it manually. 3) Over the years, you have probably made a lot of callsign
exceptions (like K1B) and you can move all of those forward to the new
version by simply merging the only country file. You (or I) would not want
these things dones automatically as there are a lot of considerations to
make when setting up the logging software and you probably DONT want to
merge the IOTA database from your old system, since the new one is more
current. You may want to keep all of your old QSL managers and addresses as
they are important to you and the merge allows this to happen. 4) I want my
old report files rather than the new ones and I had to put the $$ back in
contest mode to record the exact frequencies for each contact, which I want
to keep in my log.

Paul give some good information on the upgrade process, and fortunately
leaves the decisions to the DXer rather than the programmer, on exactly how
the upgrade is to be accomplished.

I certainly don't consider this starting over or doing it all manual.
