[Dx4win] Test version of DX4WIN that updates itself
Hi Folks, I've put another test version of the DX4WIN Data Updater on my web site. I think this version will update itself so you don't have to move any files by hand. The program will still exit after downloading the .EXE file, then you just restart the program and you should have the new version. I have tested it on Windows XP *only*. I really need someone to test it on Vista and/or Windows 7 (and any other Windows versions besides XP). Please follow these instructions exactly. Read them all the way through once before doing anything: 1. Make sure you are running the current DX4WIN Data Updater version 4.5. If you are running an *older* data updater (4.4 or earlier), you can skip steps 2 and 3 below, but *ONLY* if you have not yet updated to 4.5. 2. Download the September 12 release (version 4.4). To test the change, we need an older version to update. http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/download/dx4wupd_20110912.zip 3. Open that .ZIP file and extract only dx4win.exe to your DX4W###\UPDATE directory, allowing it to over-write the existing file if one is already there. 4. Download the new updater from: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/download/dx4wupd_46b_20111207.zip 5. Open that .ZIP file and extract only dx4win.exe to your DX4W### directory, allowing it to over-write the existing file if one is already there. 6. Check the file properties on the two files you downloaded and extracted (right-click on the file, choose Properties): DX4W###\UPDATE\dx4win.exe should be dated 12 September 2011 DX4W###\dx4win.exe should be dated 7 December 2011 with a latish-timestamp 7. If all looks OK, run the updater program in your DX4W### directory. You should see this banner: DX4WIN Data Updater - Version 4.6b Jim Reisert, AD1C - 07 December 2011 22:22:27 It should ask you if you want to stop and update dx4wupd.exe. Answer Y(es). If it doesn't ask you, start back at step #1 above. 8. Let the update complete. Ignore the message about copying the file, and simply exit the updater. 9. Start the updater again from the same place as #7 above. If the update successfully updated itself, it will report the last released version at the top: DX4WIN Data Updater - Version 4.5 Jim Reisert, AD1C - 07 December 2011 03:57:27 You should also *not* be prompted to update the updater program again. 10. You may find a dx4wupd.~xe file in your DX4W### directory. This is the old updater that was replaced. You can delete it if you wish, but you'll get another one the next time you update. I'm pretty sure the updater can't delete this file itself. Please let me know how successful you were. I would like to release this along with the IOTA update fix. Thanks 73 - Jim AD1C p.s. I thought this couldn't be done (updating a .EXE file while it was running), but I discovered a trick while browsing for an answer. -- Jim Reisert AD1C, jjreis...@alum.mit.edu, http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Dx4win] IC735 control w. dx4win: test results
Hi, In the meantime, to check if my interface (home-made G3VGR/OK2WY design 2-transistor interface) was not the source of timeout, I have installed the DXLab software Commander v. 8.9.5 and selected IC735, 9600 kbps, 8N1, DTR high, RTS low and guess what: everything works superb! I can read and control VFO A/B frequencies, all modes and even control the split operation, setting VFO A/B frequencies, inverting them etc….I used polling interval of 350ms (200 was the default, but somebody on Internet sites suggested not to use less than 350mS). There were NEVER any timeouts. As a conclusion, something seems to be conflicting between dx4win radio control program and IC735. Jim Hargrave, W5IFP was trying to help me and was playing with demo version of DX4WIN 8.05 (he is not currently using your program) , modifying the IC735 original rig file. He sent it to me and I replaced a file in my dx4win 8.04. In preferences, I set DTR high, 9600bps, either 5000 or 350 ms @6 retries. Now, there is no more timeout. When I select radio/radio frequency control I can read and write frequencies and modes to IC735 without problem, and the changes are reflected in the logging window. But, when I close frequency control window, nothing happens in the logging window when I switch radio bands and modes. No timeouts, but looks like the program doesn’t poll radio data automatically. As I have taken out the “transceiver” jumper , radio doesn’t send this data automatically upon changes. If I activate transceiver it may work, but then the help file says there is a risk of collision with dx4win commands. Would anybody knowledgeable with dx4win configs please check the attached rig file to see where the lack of polling problem might be. It seems the control now works at half and if the polling gets activated, I could use my rig with dx4win. I asked Paul for help, but even if he finds the issue, he doesn't have iC735 to check the end result. I haven't subsribed to the reflector list to avoid my mailbox get filled with many messages I may not be concerned with, but am checking the reflector site from time-to-time. So, please respond also directly to my yahoo mail account! Re: [Dx4win] Test something 4me?
Thanks you guys for your input and help. Got it working... Old logs coming up FB in v.8! The IDE to USB device purchased at Staples appears to be the culprit. All the log files were arriving corrupted as they were copied off the old hard drive. So, this morning when hooking the old hard drive up to a different machine which had an IDE bus, I copied my old log files off, then transfered them to the new laptop... and the logs all come up no problem. Looks like I found the latest one... with 10,805 qsos in it. SO, I'm doing much better now... Last but not least is getting a USB to 9-pin serial cable so I can have rig control... Those seem to be hard to come by for 64 bit Windows 7 machines! Ray On Wed, Apr 21, 2010 at 4:41 PM, Mel ve...@videotron.ca wrote: Or your hard drive might be in trouble. I hope you have back-up. Since others here are saying it should work fine cuz it worked great for them, I now suspect my IDE-USB connection tool to not be 100pct reliable. Re: [Dx4win] Test something 4me?
Ray, About a month ago I upgraded from version 5.03 to the new version 8.x and everything went very smoothly. I bought a new computer and just installed ver 8 to the new computer. My old computer still runs ver 5.03. I copied my log file out to a flash drive, imported the file to my new computer with ver 8 and it all went very smoothly without any problems. I tried to then actually do the upgrade on the older computer but was having issues with windows xp and ver 8. Looking into it further I needed to upgrade the windows xp service pack. I started to have problems with that so I just keep it the way it was. It looks like it could have been done though, I just did not want to mess with it as I'm using the newer computer now anyway. But to answer your question, The log file transfer from 5.03 to the new 8.x when off with NO problems for me. I also transferred/merged my WPX contest logs into both versions and had no problem with either one of them. Hello everyone. This is a test to make sure that I am finally back on the reflector. I changed to a DSL service on January 6th. I unsubscribed the reflector using my old e-mail address and server. I tried to subscribe to the list again with my new address and server. For some reason, the robot would not let me subscribe with my new address until today. I have no idea why it would not respond to my request for over a month. I did not change anything in my set up. But, I tried it again today and it says I am subscribed again. 73Dick KS0M Richard C.
