within sea slugs. My host university and advisor would be at the University
of the Philippines, Diliman. I am a US citizen and will be done my Masters
in marine biology sometime between the end of August and early October.
Does anyone know of any grants or fellowships I could apply for this type
of research other than the NIH graduate fellowship (F31)? My GRE scores
have expired. I am looking for grants and fellowships that do not require
the GRE. I do not qualify for the NSF Graduate Fellowship since I already
will have a Masters degree. Any help and suggestions for funding
opportunities would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoctoral Position in Public Participation in Digitization of Biodiversity Collections

2013-06-19 Thread Jessica Zelt
Posting for Austin Mast...

 Dear Colleagues,

I would be grateful if you would forward this on to any potential
 candidates. Thanks!

Postdoctoral Position in Public Participation in Digitization of
 Biodiversity Collections

A postdoctoral position is available with iDigBio in the research group of
 Austin Mast (Department of Biological Science, Florida State University;
http://www.bio.fsu.edu/faculty-mast.php) to study engagement of the
public in the digitization of biodiversity research collections, produce
best practice and standards documents related to this in collaboration with
relevant stakeholders, and assist in the design of interoperability between
the iDigBio portal/cloud, public participation tools, and public
participation content management systems. iDigBio (www.idigbio.org) is
the central resource for NSF's Advancing Digitization of Biodiversity
Collections Program (ADBC), and it is located at the University of Florida
 and Florida State University.

There are approximately 1 billion biodiversity specimens at US
institutions, but only about 10% of these are digitized (e.g., databased,
georeferenced, and/or digitally imaged). ADBC is funding large-scale,
collaborative digitization by thematic collection networks (TCNs) focused
on particular research themes. Seven TCNs involving 134 institutions
have been funded to date, with more to be announced in July. Among other
activities, iDigBio is overseeing implementation of standards and best
practices for digitization in this community and developing a cloud
environment for existing and future digital content about biodiversity
specimens and a portal to it.

A Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., biodiversity research, biodiversity
informatics) is required, as is demonstration of (1) familiarity with
biodiversity collections and some aspect of their digitization, (2)
familiarity with (or interest to learn) relevant principles of informatics,
 (3) successful collaboration and time management skills, and (4) successful
written and oral communication skills. The postdoctoral scholar will be
expected to interact positively and productively with a wide range of
people (more so than in many other postdoctoral positions), including other
members of iDigBio, members of the large ADBC community (e.g., in working
groups and workshops), software developers working on digitization tools,
other members of the citizen science community, and members of the public.

Annual salary starts at $40,000, and the position is expected to be for
two years. It is based in Tallahassee, Florida, a small state capital
bordered on the south and west by the Apalachicola National Forest and on
the north by the historical hunting plantations of the Red Hills Region.
 White-sand
beaches, clear freshwater springs, and hiking and biking trails are within
easy driving distances of town. The region is one of North America's
 biotic hotspots.

To apply, send a cover letter and CV with contact information for three
references in a single pdf file to Austin Mast (am...@bio.fsu.edu). In
the cover letter, please cite past activities that demonstrate each of (1)
through (4) above as well as provide the date on which you could start the
position and a paragraph or two on your long-term career goals and how you
see this position fitting into them. Applications will be considered
beginning on July 8 until the position is filled. Florida State
University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.

[ECOLOG-L] Second Call for Art: 2013 ESA SS EcoArt Festival

2013-06-19 Thread Jessica Shade
There is still time to submit pictures of your art for this year’s ESA SS
EcoArt Festival!

The EcoArt festival is a display of ecologically themed art (or art by
ecologically minded individuals) that takes place every year at the ESA
conference.

This year we will be combining the art festival with music at the ESA
Special Session called “An Evening of Art and Music”, which will take place
Monday, August 5, 2013 from 8 -10pm. Because transporting art to
Minneapolis may be difficult for most conference attendees, pictures of the
art will be projected as musicians perform at an open-mic.

If have artwork of any sort (such as paintings, sculptures, photographs,
videos, etc.) with an ecological focus please send in electronic photos of
your work for the show. The pictures will be projected at the ESA Special
Session and displayed before the event on the ESA SS Facebook page
(https://www.facebook.com/groups/esa.student.section/?fref=ts). The ESA
Student Section will also be awarding prizes for the images with the most FB
likes.

Send all images to Jessica Shade at sh...@berkeley.edu, along with your
name, the name of the artwork, and the media used. For more information
about the show please see our website at
http://www.esa.org/students/section/node/464. We will be accepting
submissions until the end of June.

For those of you who don’t submit anything but are appreciators of art, we
welcome you to look at the submissions on our Facebook page and to come to
the Special Session on Aug 5th for the show!

can be submitted in either official language and should be comprised of
the
following:

1.
A cover page including the project title, name and complete contact
information
for the organizer(s), and project summary (Max. 300 words), suitable for
public
circulation.

2.
A one-page, single-spaced narrative that includes: an introduction to
the
project goals; description of the activities, and as appropriate, the
source of
the data to be synthesized and methods of analysis; IT needs; expected
outcome(s); importance to Canada.

3.
A list of participants, with a brief summary of their expertise.
Programs
should involve 10 to 15 participants, including one or more graduate
students.
Indicate which individuals have committed to the project and which are
potential participants.

4.
A budget including logistics and transportation. In the past, working
groups
were awarded with $10,000 to $17,000 grants.

5.
A copy of NSERC’s Form 100 or equivalent for the organizer(s).

Submit
the full proposal as a pdf file by 16 August
2013 to: ciee-i...@uregina.ca.

Suggestions:

Proposals
should be clear and concise about project goals, procedures and
anticipated
outcomes. The CIEE is a national organization; organizers should aim for
geographic diversity and gender balance among the participants. Foreign
participants are welcome.

Applicants
are encouraged to contact the CIEE director, Peter Leavitt, and the
Assistant
Director, Diego Steinaker (ciee-i...@uregina.ca) with any questions,
including those on content,
budget and facilities.

understanding and local awareness of a critically endangered ecosystem

well-rounded project and will benefit a wide range of people and species.

We have been struggling with funding so I am reaching out to this community

The most successful model for the restoration of ecologically disrupted land in
South Africa has been the conversion of farm and ranch land to hunting ranches,
and it would seem that that model would be the best approach toward the
restoration of the renosterveld, which once provided habitat for
many of the RSA's rich diversity of game species.

My name is Evan Eifler. With my project partners we have developed a

conservation and photography project to help increase scientific

understanding and local awareness of a critically endangered ecosystem

within the richest floral kingdom on Earth in South Africa. It is a very

well-rounded project and will benefit a wide range of people and species.

We have been struggling with funding so I am reaching out to this community

for help. Please Please consider donating or forwarding the project to your

personal contacts - which doesn't cost a thing!

Check out our project page with lots of information and photos -

Also check out our project featured in the online edition of GOOD Magazine -

floral-kingdom-on-earth

The project is great in theory, but it needs additional donations over the

next 11 days if it is going to make the impact it is designed to!

I appreciate any help you're willing to give,

Evan
