[ECOLOG-L] Online Resource for Getting Jobs
Hi Ecolog Listers, I am a marine spatial ecologist and I've been a long time subscriber to this list, but an infrequent poster. I love this list as a resource! I noticed many of my fellow listers are asking for help in searching for jobs and build their careers in Ecology, so I decided to try to help by creating an online Web Show that I created to help people get jobs in Ocean Conservation. The Web Show is called OCC TV and I post videos every week where I either offer tips on building a career in Ocean Conservation and/or I interview a professional in the industry where they share their experiences, successes, and failures as well as offer advice to help you build your career. Here is the link to all the episodes so far: http://www.speakupforblue.com/category/ocean-conservation-careers I also want to point your attention to an online membership program that I recently launched called Ocean Conservation Careers, which is designed to offer you strategies to help you build your career, and continue to build your career in Ocean Conservation. Also included in the program is an online community where you, as a member, can ask specific questions pertaining to your career and can meet other people who are in a similar position and build your own network of people help you out to build a successful career. You can get more information on the membership program here: http://www.oceanconservationcareers.com/ I speak to every new member who registers for the membership over Skype/Phone to discuss their career goals and try and point them in the right direction for their future. My current members love this part of the membership! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Best Regards, Andrew Andrew Lewin, M.Sc., Adv. Dipl. Re: [ECOLOG-L] App for plant community field data collection
Here is a list of potential data collection programs: http://www.epicollect.net/ http://fulcrumapp.com/ (as listed by Jeff Davis) http://www.commandmobile.com/learnmore.aspx http://www.esquiggles.com/ Also, why not just use an Office App like QuickOffice. Then you could just create a spreadsheet, enter the data in the field, then export directly to MS Excel. Best, Rob From: Ecological Society of America: grants, jobs, news [ECOLOG-L@LISTSERV.UMD.EDU] on behalf of Richard Boyce [boy...@nku.edu] Sent: Monday, April 29, 2013 3:41 PM To: ECOLOG-L@LISTSERV.UMD.EDU Subject: [ECOLOG-L] App for plant community field data collection Fellow Ecologers, The other day, I managed to leave my printed data sheets behind when I went out to a site to collect plant community data. Fortunately, I had my iPod, and I was able to use Notes to collect the data. My sites have a modified Whittaker plot design that consists of one large 20x50 m site, with one 5x20 m, two 2x5, and 10 0.5x2 m plots nested within. For the small 0.5x2 plots, I estimate coverage using a sampling frame; in all the other sizes, I note presence/absence. I've also been recording flower/fruiting. So Notes worked OK, but I had to type in names for every plot, which was tedious and slowed me down. The printed data sheets I usually use have species names for each plot size that occurred in the last sampling season, because species turn over slowly, and I simply update presence (and percent coverage in the smallest plots). What I would love is a form-type app that allowed me to preload species names for the plots, then enter and update percent cover/presence as appropriate. And if I had to add a new species, I'd like the flexibility to do that in the field. And I would need something that can work in the field without a connection but would update when I had a new connection. I've looked in Apple's App store at form apps, but none of them seem to have what I need. If you know of such an app--or even better, have used such an app--please let me and the list know. [ECOLOG-L] Armchair Taxonomist Challenge
Get in touch with your inner science writer: announcing the Armchair Taxonomist Challenge! Humans have probably been naming things and making lists since our earliest ancestors began to separate Stuff That Tastes Good from Stuff That Killed That Other Guy That One Time.Trouble is, a lot of information about living things is hidden behind paywalls or scattered across random sources where the general public cant easily get to it. Thats where you come in! The Encyclopedia of Life (eol.org) is hosting a challenge. The goal: bring information about animals, plants, fungi, protozoa, and bacteria to the world. Contestants are asked to research and write short descriptions of some of nature's most fascinating species. Those descriptions will be reviewed by curators for inclusion in the Encyclopedia of Life. And here's the kicker: the best descriptions will earn their writers a place in history a private behind-the-scenes tour of the Smithsonian Institutions National Museum of Natural History is up for grabs. Check out the contest details at BoingBoing (http://boingboing.net/2013/04/22/armchairtaxonomist.html), and visit the contest entry form (http://eol.wufoo.com/forms/armchair-taxonomist/)to get started.

Thanks, Tom. Your Native Seed Conference came off very well if the single day I spent there (April 10) was a fair sample of its quality. I look forward to hearing about your next one, and perhaps one of broader scope--say an Ecosystem Restoration Conference? [ECOLOG-L] Seeking skunk vs predator footage - NHK Japan
Dear ECOLOG-L members, My name is Gene Hamazaki from Japanese TV NHK. I had recently posted an inquiry about skunks here and received a lot of precious advice. Thank you very much. We have yet another inquiry - if you or any third party you know owns a footage of skunks interacting with predators except dogs (mountain lions, coyotes, wolves, raptors...) I would very much like to hear from you. Below is an example of footage that we've found - while this one is apparently shot on a fixed trail-cam, it is quite interesting. Hungry skunk and a hungry mountain lion in a face off over a roadkill deer.
