[ECOLOG-L] Smithsonian: Two positions in the Marine Global Earth Observatory

2014-07-02 Thread Duffy, Emmett
Two positions at the Smithsonian

Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO) —
Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network (TMON)

The Smithsonian Institution seeks excellent candidates for two positions to
support the Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO), a growing global
network of partners collaborating to understand how marine life is responding
to environmental change, and the role of biodiversity in mediating resilience
of near-shore marine ecosystems. The partnership is coordinated by the
Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network (TMON) based at the Smithsonian and is
unique in its use of standardized measurements and coordinated experiments, and
its long-term focus on biodiversity and functioning in shallow waters.
MarineGEO/TMON represents a major research initiative in the science portfolio
of the Smithsonian Institution. The network currently consists of the
Smithsonian’s four Atlantic sites in Maryland (Smithsonian Environmental
Research Center), Florida (Smithsonian Marine Station), Belize (Carrie Bow Cay
field station), and Panama (STRI Bocas del Toro field station), and is actively
developing additional partner sites.

Program Manager

The Program Manager assists the Director of TMON in coordinating management of
the international network, maintains accounting and reporting responsibilities,
manages contractual agreements with national and international research
partners, prepares summaries of research and program progress and needs, and
manages logistical needs, fund-raising and development opportunities, and
outreach initiatives for the network. The Program Manager works closely with
the Director in developing the collaborative network of MarineGEO/TMON sites
globally, including coordination of research and training activities,
fellowships and small grants programs, and assistance with data management. The
Program Manager serves as assistant to the Director.

Candidates should ideally hold a M.S. degree in biology, oceanography, or
environmental science with a marine focus. Experience managing large grants,
budgets, and/or research programs is strongly preferred. Because the project
involves a collaborative global partnership, strong organizational,
communication, writing, and people skills are essential.

The Program Manager position will be based at the headquarters of
MarineGEO/TMON at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in
Washington, DC. This is a full-time, permanent, trust-fund position with
similar requirements and benefits to a federal position. The position is open
to all candidates eligible to work in the United States. Review of applications
will begin on 30 July 2014 and will continue until the position is filled.

Marine Biology Research Technician

The marine biology research technician provides technical support for a variety
of field and laboratory tasks in MarineGEO/TMON’s program of marine research.
Under the guidance of the TMON Director, the duties of the incumbent will
include but are not limited to field sampling of marine organisms,
identification of marine organisms using microscopy and taxonomic literature;
conducting field and laboratory experiments; preparation and curation of frozen
and preserved specimens; deposition of specimens in museum collections;
maintenance and data retrieval from water quality monitoring instruments;
management, entry, and analysis of data; and assistance in preparation and
publication of reports, proposals, and manuscripts.

The position requires a Bachelor’s degree, with Master’s degree strongly
preferred, in Biology, Marine Science, or related field. The position requires
practical knowledge of biology and taxonomy of marine organisms and marine
research procedures. Ability to operate small to medium sized boats is strongly
preferred. Scuba certification and scientific diving experience are strongly
preferred, and must be completed soon after acceptance of the position. The
applicant must be competent in computer data entry, data management,
statistical analysis, and effective writing skills.

The Research Technician position will be based at the Smithsonian Environmental
Research Center in Edgewater, MD. This is a full-time, permanent, trust-fund
position with similar requirements and benefits to a federal position. The
position is open to all candidates eligible to work in the United States.
Review of applications will begin on 30 July 2014 and will continue until the
position is filled.

Applications for both positions should include (1) a current Curriculum Vitae;
(2) a 1-2 page summary of career goals, experience, and interests relevant to
the MarineGEO/TMON program; and (3) names and full contact information (postal
address, email address, and phone number) of three references. Please submit
applications electronically as a single PDF document to Dr. J. Emmett Duffy,
Director of TMON and Chair of the Search Committee at:

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoc on e-DNA metabarcoding in Copenhagen, Denmark

2014-07-02 Thread Aimee Classen
The Natural History Museum of Denmark is offering a 2-year postdoctoral
position on e-
DNA metabarcoding commencing October 1st 2014 or soon thereafter in the Rønsted
group, Section for Evolutionary Genomics. The application deadline is August
1st 2014.
A major outstanding question in natural science is the influence of the
environment on the
expression of chemical defence compounds. With the advent of high throughput
Next Generation
Sequencing data, it is now possible to use eDNA Metabarcoding to provide an
estimate of
biodiversity in for example an environmental soil sample. These new promising
approaches can
potentially provide an easy, more accurate and relevant estimate of the biotic
assemblages
present in the local environment than traditional habitat description or
environmental analysis
focusing on morphology, physical and chemical parameters. The strategic aim of
this postdoctoral
research project is to develop a model for using eDNA Metabarcoding to express
local biotic
pressure and to use this model to test the influence of the biotic pressure on
expression of plant
chemical defence compounds. The position will include some fieldwork.

The successful candidate will become an integrated part of the highly
international research group
of Nina Rønsted and the Section of Evolutionary Genomics at the Natural History
Museum of
Denmark. The Rønsted group explores the evolution of plants and the correlation
between
phylogeny, biological interactions and natural products, to explain patterns
and processes of
diversity. The position will include collaboration with ongoing research
projects in the group and
benefit from association with the MedPlant ITN network, www.MedPlant.eu. The
position is funded
by a grant from the VILLUM FONDEN.

maximum of 3 years PhD
experience. Mobility is required and the position cannot be used to extend
existing contracts or
recruit researchers with a PhD degree from the University of Copenhagen, unless
the candidate
has worked at another institution for minimum a year.

[ECOLOG-L] postdoc fringe vs other fringes on grants

2014-07-02 Thread Malcolm McCallum
I stumbled across a noteworthy thing that answers a question I have
always had regarding the dependence on postdocs over research
associates, and because it was earlier a point of discussion, I felt
some of you would want to know.

These are usually grant-funded positions, and postdoc fringe benefits
cost less on average than would a research associate. For example, at
major research universities, the fringe rates for 2014/2015 are below
(this is all public info). It is obvious that the differential in
these rates would stack up quickly when dealing with millions of
dollars. 1% difference is on $3,000 on a single $300K grant, but add
that up over a few million dollars and you have $50K, and most places
have larger dichotomies than 1%.

University 1
Faculty = 29.2%
Postdoc = 27.9%

University 2
Faculty 33.7%
Regular 46.5% (not sure what this refers too)
Research associate = 23.3%
Postdoc = 15.2%
hourly student = 4%

University 3
Faculty Monthly Staff = 24.3-26.2% (this includes Research scientists)
Postdocs = 16.9%
PHD students = 9.1%
other students = 7.7%

this is probably why many research offices encourage and many research
scientists choose to use postdocs over non-postdoctoral scientists,
even if the training element is lacking.

Money tends to be the defining element in decision making in most
organizations.

[ECOLOG-L] AGU Fall Meeting Session: Drought and Its Impacts on Terrestrial Ecosystems

2014-07-02 Thread Melinda Smith
Dear Colleague,

We hope you will consider submitting an abstract to the session
entitled Drought and Its Impacts on Terrestrial Ecosystems: Current
Understanding and Future Prospects at the AGU Fall Meeting (15-19 December
2014 in San Francisco; http://fallmeeting.agu.org/2014/). You can find
details about the session and submit abstracts at the following link:
https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm14/webprogrampreliminary/Session2024.html.
The deadline for abstract submission is August 6, 2014.

Session description:
In 2012, 60% of the US was affected by a drought that ranked among the
most severe since 1895. Scientists have a longstanding interest in
understanding the impacts of severe drought, but this drought and other
recent record-breaking extremes have now raised public awareness of the
economic and human health consequences. Thus, there is a societal and
scientific imperative to better understand and forecast drought effects on
terrestrial ecosystems, particularly since the frequency and intensity
droughts are expected to increase with global climate change. This session
will address our current understanding of drought as a climatological event
and the impacts of drought on terrestrial ecosystems. We will identify
knowledge gaps and future research directions for enhancing understanding
of droughts and their effects on ecosystem dynamics. We invite
contributions from biogeochemists, climatologists, ecologists,
hydrologists, and system modelers with expertise in the study of droughts
and their impacts on terrestrial ecosystems.

Confirmed Invited speakers:
Christine Hawkes (University of Texas)
