I've been using an earlier version of the Heil FS-3 for over 20 years.
Simple, reliable, and relatively small and unobtrusive.

Interesting that little has been said about the ANTENNA. Power is only part
of the equation, and I suspect that there is more dB gain from upgrading
your antenna than upgrading your amplifier from 100 to 500 or 500 to 1500
watts. I've never operated with more than 600 watts power output, but I
Yaesu is selling disposable radios. I called about sending in my eight year
old FT-100D for repair and was told they no longer support the FT-100. Why
would anyone spend 12K on a Yaesu radio that will be obsolete in less than

My experience with Elecraft service, on the other hand,
I friend of mine sent a 'box of parts' back to Heil and they
replaced/rebuilt his headset for something like $25 plus shipping. I don't
know how long ago that was, but the bottom line is that Heil provides
service on broken headsets.

I asked the Elecraft service technician this question during a

Thanks, and please keep the KRX3 advisories coming so I can predict when my

Radio weight is relative (isn't everything?). I've owned two radios in 27
years of ham radio, the FT-707 (14.3 lb. and considered tiny in its day) and
the FT-100 (6.6 lb. and very tiny). The former was a knob radio, the latter
a push-button radio. I quickly learned to use just enough force to
I've been following the 'big gun' thread with interest. I'm astonished that
this group seems to imply that 'big gun' status depends upon the radio you
own, rather than the amplifiers and antennas you use. Most rigs today put

way to 'big gun' status, whether you ever use any of that 'setup' or not.

Thanks for the shipping update, Dick. It's nice to see Dayton orders are
being filled. Eric implied that once Dayton orders were shipped, they would
fly through the summer orders pretty quickly. Please keep posting shipping
dates so that I can estimate when my September order is likely to arrive.
