Re: [Elecraft] just 500W ?

2011-01-25 Thread Nelson Moyer
Interesting that little has been said about the ANTENNA. Power is only part of the equation, and I suspect that there is more dB gain from upgrading your antenna than upgrading your amplifier from 100 to 500 or 500 to 1500 watts. I've never operated with more than 600 watts power output, but I

Re: [Elecraft] Yaesu versus Elecraft Service

2009-07-05 Thread Nelson Moyer
Yaesu is selling disposable radios. I called about sending in my eight year old FT-100D for repair and was told they no longer support the FT-100. Why would anyone spend 12K on a Yaesu radio that will be obsolete in less than eight years? My experience with Elecraft service, on the other hand,

Re: [Elecraft] Sl OT: Heil headset problem

2009-03-01 Thread Nelson Moyer
I friend of mine sent a 'box of parts' back to Heil and they replaced/rebuilt his headset for something like $25 plus shipping. I don't know how long ago that was, but the bottom line is that Heil provides service on broken headsets. Nelson, KU0A -Original Message- From:

OK, so what's the bottom line? Is the Radio Shack ESD mat any good or should I spring for a 'quality' mat, and if it's the latter, how do I know which mat(s) meet specs? Nelson, KU0A -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On

[Elecraft] Low Power RTTY Output

2008-11-24 Thread Nelson Moyer
When I connect my Hal DXP38 AF Out to the K3 Line In, I get a maximum of 20 watts RF output, even when the TX Level pot on the DXP38 is set for maximum output, MIC SEL is set to Line In, PWR is set to 100 watts, and Line is set to 60 (max setting available). I see no ALC bars. When I connect the

RE: [Elecraft] K3 - Preamp gain

2008-11-16 Thread Nelson Moyer
I asked the Elecraft service technician this question during a troubleshooting session on the phone last week, and he told me the built-in preamp has 10 dB gain. That's approximately two S units. My listening experience on 160 meters with a preamp with 17 dB gain suggests that 10 dB is about

RE: [Elecraft] Weight of equipment

2008-07-01 Thread Nelson Moyer
Radio weight is relative (isn't everything?). I've owned two radios in 27 years of ham radio, the FT-707 (14.3 lb. and considered tiny in its day) and the FT-100 (6.6 lb. and very tiny). The former was a knob radio, the latter a push-button radio. I quickly learned to use just enough force to

I've been following the 'big gun' thread with interest. I'm astonished that this group seems to imply that 'big gun' status depends upon the radio you own, rather than the amplifiers and antennas you use. Most rigs today put out between 100-200 watts, regardless of price. DX'ing and contesting
