I think one of my K2s has suffered the dreaded headphone jack failure (no

Actually, that wouldn't work. as long as the extension is plugged into

Yeah, that would definitely work. Except that the people who have the
most problems with jack failures are ones who, like myself, are
constantly plugging and unplugging the headphones, for whatever
reason... The extension dongle would be pretty annoying for anything
but occasional use.

What about just keeping a mini extension plugged in to save the jack from

I don't know about the K1 but if you are going to replace the jack in
your K2 you might consider wiring a separate headphone/speaker switch
when you do so.

Yes, the same thing applies. The little plastic lever inside the jack

My K2's speaker stopped working, headphones still work. This has happened
twice since building my K1 because the "switch" inside the K1 jack is sawed

Does this same failure mode apply to the K2 headphone jack?

I did it a couple of years ago with a standard 25w soldering iron no
problem.
Anyone who is replacing the headphone jack might want to consider
wiring a speaker switch into the K2 at the same time. That way you can

Another way to treat that jack more gently is to use a right-angle adapter.
That greatly shortens the "level arm" sticking out in front of the K2.
Can't say it's the reason, buy my 11 year old K2 still has the original jack

John,
If you have no de-soldering tools, try to get the solder out with wick,
but if that fails, cut the jack apart and remove the pins one at a time.
I don't see any advantage to not using the headphone jack. Who knows,
the new one may last forever.

John,
I believe you have caught a different bug. The usual failure is that
the headphones still work, but the speaker does not - sometimes the
speaker stays on even though the headphones are plugged in.

I went to plug in my headphones this morning to the headphone jack, and

Thanks much

I use the line output for my computer, including sound
recording. That way radio audio level settings never affect
digital mode decoding.
I use the rear panel speaker out for my headphones or
speaker, and have a desk mounted switch that lets me use
multiple headphones on any audio channel.

Tom,
The normal headphone jack failure leaves the speaker dead, but the
headphones work OK.
It is possible that the switch in your headphone jack failed so that the
speaker is always on whether the headphones are plugged in or not. I
have heard of one other case of a similar failure mode.

The headphone jack seems like a proven part. However, from what I
have gathered in reading the archives, the external speaker jack is
the jack that has the most failures. I know mine on 6233 has been
crap since day one.
