I've got an APC UPS which will initiate a graceful shutdown of my PC when a
power fail occurs unless I otherwise intervene.
The UPS also keeps my K3 PS alive so that in theory I could do a graceful
shutdown of that as well. I often leave my station powered on even while
not in use (in test mode
You could use Task Scheduler (if you have a Windows 7 PC) to initiate
a batch file that copies the shutdown command out to the correct COM
port for your K3. The scheduler list can have one or more entries
that will run at Windows shutdown time. It can support many types of
trigger events. I use
Or maybe accurate time. Please excuse typos.

Thanks to all who answered. The problem turned out to be too much
voltage drop. I bypassed the terminal strip between the PS and the rig
and all is well.

This morning while playing in the RTTY 'test, I answered a CQ by sending

*CLICK* and the K3 powered off. I wasn't watching it, so didn't see any
error message. Vague I know, but it's all I have. Any thoughts?

It has happened to me a few times, Mike. What is frustrating is that
after power up, the K3 goes back to a previous setting. You then have to
try and remember what frequency you were on before the power off.

I noticed that you said you were running at 100W. That may be your
problem. RTTY is a 100% duty cycle mode and I believe your rig may be
overheating to the point of self-protection (shutdown).
When I run data modes, I normally reduce power to 25W. I have never had
the same problem you
sagged below 11v on RTTY.
I wager to say that one of the above issues is causing your
problem. After the above checks, I have never had this
problem again.

Properly assembled PowerPole connectors will not get loose. The
contacts are silver plated, so they should not corrode - even if they
do, the wiping action when two APP connectors are plugged together will
clean the contact area.
If your APP connectors are loose, they are not assembled right
Except that since there is no locking mechanism, the mated connectors DO
pull loose from the jostling of using the controls, over time. Every PP
that I use in a mobile environment has required tie wraps or similar binding
because while they pass current better than say Molex, they come apart (the

Hi, Dick.
I have not seen any caveats either in the Elecraft manual, or in Fred's
book about not being able to run at 100 watts. But you could be correct.
Any comment from Wayne, Eric or Don?

In the end, it is a THERMAL problem.
The K3 PA heatsink+fan has a limited, finite thermal resistance to the

and by design and construction it goes into the

Hi, Chuck:
I had the same problem with my K3 using an Astron 35M; tried my SEC1223
switching supply and shut down continued. Very frustrating but I eventually
tracked it down to the Anderson Power Pole connectors! I am not a fan of those
ubiquitous things!
I'll bet that's where you'll find

Check your power connections. It sounds like you may have a loose connection
that is OK in receive but as soon as transmit current starts to flow the
voltage drops low enough to shut off the K3.

Have you checked your power supply connections? Or the power supply
itself? My K2/100 was doing that in SSB at high power, upgraded to a
better supply and problem disappeared.

I had the chance to use a K3 during SS CW. I liked the rx and found it easy
to remove most of the QRM. Something I'm not used to! Since I usually
operate with antennas fed with open wire I have been accustomed to fine
tuning an external antenna tuner during automated CQing. The first time I
