John - I would say that if it is just flickering on and off that is exactly right. It does at least show that the receiver is live and the residual noise is registering on the S-meter. Perhaps if you shorted ANT1 to ground the flickering might reduce. Personally, if my S-meter did not

To the issue, I would think that the hardware AGC intercept (and doing the mod) should strictly be a performance issue set by Elecraft for engineering reasons, and that the neat *option* to do S-meter calibration would be to set S9 and the other major points (S1/3/5/7 and +20/40/60) by raising

Hi Dave, I am curious what version of firmware you're running in your K3. My K3 (SN 312) is running the latest firmware (MCU 1.66 DSP1 1.52). I have CONFIG menu SMTR OF = 024 SMTR SC = 014) with PRE AMP on. As expected my S-Meter reads S9 with 50uv applied from a XG1 signal generator.
