Anybody out there who wants to tackle a repair on k-1. It has very
weak audio. The receiver seems to align, I can hear stns, relays
click, filters wrk, LED's light properly, the display functions.
trouble shooting is not my bag. No test equipment at all but a DMM. I
just got back into ham radio
Hi All,
I've just spent the day fine tuning my KPA100 - measuring the output power
on each band and trying to improve it. Initially I was getting a HI Current
warning on each of the bands from 160 through to 40 (all into a dummy load),
but not on the rest. In all cases the maximum power I could

Must be the new math - 361 - 354 = 100. Grin! Or have I managed to
miss something?
Senioritis...:-)
On a lighter note, I am building K2 number 4996...The owner and I were both
hoping it would be number 5000, but he's glad that it was not number 4999...

Mike,
How are you measuring power out? and how good is your dummy load? (check it
with your antenna analyzer) - that will get the first things out of the way
for us.
The Hi-Cur indication is coming from the base K2 and not the KPA100 - it
indicates that the base K2 has to drive the KPA100 too
Thanks for the tip Tom - what a sweet little program! Works perfectly and
the visual and audible warnings on duplicate contacts are great! Very nice
map and history. Definitely a winner! 73 es have fun -- Don N4HH

Hi Bill,
Check the value in the menu item CAL tPA, I'll bet it says
256. There seems to be a mysterious set of circumstances
that causes this value to be set to the maximum value.
I've had this occur on several occasions and the solution
is to reset the CAL tPA value.
73 and good luck,
Doug,
Bill,
Check the menu entry for CAL tPA - it should be set to the same temperature
as the transistor cases in degrees C. If you let things cool down to
ambient (long enough so everything is at the same temperature, you can set
it properly.
I really don't know what is going on here because I have

HI Chuck,
I was in North Florida this week-end and WELL, I now know its something I am
doing wrong and not the KX1. I took the KX1 to a OPARC meeting contest head
quarters and asked one of the operators named Jim to check it out for me. He
hooked into his antenna used for the contest and in
Michael,
do not despair. What you are experiencing is common enough, and made
worse no doubt by the terrible band conditions we are currently
suffering. I offer some suggestions below, and I am confident others
on the list will have better ones to offer.

The audio stage in the K1 is pretty simple and not much can go wrong.
Assuming it's getting sufficient drive (no way to really check with just a
DMM I don't think), it should work.
I would start with the classics:
1. Check ALL your solder joints. Don't just look at them, reheat them. Don't

Due to all of the folks out there with rigs scattered to the winds,

On page 26 of the assembly manual, the 6th step down, it says do not remove
the backing from either side of the diffuser, I assume that means to leave
the paper backing on that has the writing on it?
Also, I don't thing there is a protective film on the back of the LCD, I do
not see any faint
Tim,
If you see no diagonal lines - then remove NOTHING.
Yes there is a film on both sides of the diffuser, and that is a benefit.
If the rear side has the diagonal lines, then that film should be removed
because the stripes show through.
There is no protective film on the back side of the LCD
