I am very grateful to you Don for your reply. Over the years I can't

David,
Your symptoms clearly indicate that you are suffering from 6m Bugitis, and I

As you point out there is a lot going on on 6m, even during the lean times,

Peter,
While I should say That can't happen, it obviously is happening.
There is no signal on the P4/J8 connector that should cause those symptoms.
It sounds like, when the KAT2 is connected, there is some signal being
injected at the antenna which is causing the AGC to fully activate and
that

I agree with your thoughts, but KAT2 is currently a 'stand alone unit'

So, like you, I am at a loss to understand what is happening.

Hi Don
Don't want to take up your time, but thanks again.
I doubt there will be a problem on the K2 control board, as it runs
happily without KAT2 and/or with KPA100 installed.
I did check the J8 cable carefully right at the outset, but can find no
sign of shorts or open circuits.

You may have a simple problem - diodes D16 and D17 in the KPA100

When that happens, the K2 microprocessor thinks there is no power being

To test for that condition, set the power control to 4 or 5 watts and
I too am considering the K3 6m pre amp. But I hear most everything called in as

One of the things to keep in mind is that having a receiver to hot is not

My mistake.
I appreciate all the responses to my questions. While Grants information
below sounds reasonable and may well be correct I would like to see
something in the manual about how the AM power setting functions.
Hi Jim,
I have used my K3 on AM quite a bit recently and can share a few ideas and
experiences with you.
First of all, the information you have received so far about the indicated
power level on the K3 is correct - the K3 power display shows PEP reading.
So, 100w on the display is equivalent to

It would be nice to be able to independently select mic gain for front or

It wouldn't hurt to have something in the manual, but what I described is the
correct way to adjust the K3 for AM operation.
In AM mode, use TUNE to adjust your external amp, NOT Transmit. TUNE will let
you get to a full 100W carrier out of the K3, or whatever level your amp needs
to get to
You might be able to use a pair of command macros to set the gain and
select front or rear microphone.
This isn't quite what you asked for, but one of the motivations for
offering command macros was to allow you to do something like this.

something about it. I have developed a PIC based unit that decodes the
current K3 band data signals to provide these outputs. More information
