I have seen some postings of EXPERT 1k users here on the reflector, I need your help. A friend has a K3 and a P3. Now he wants to connect his EXPERT PA to this combo. The problem: The K3 RS232 is occupied by the cable to P3, both P3 RS232 are occupied by Cables to k3 and PC. Because he wants to use the Expert with different Antennas on different bands, he wants the K3 to tell the EXPERT on which band it should work. But how? [Elecraft] OT: Smart metering
I'm a retired electric utility communications technician. My utility has used smart meter technology to read meters for a number of years. My gas and electric meters are on the outside wall of my shack and I've not been aware of any problem, either to or from the meters. There are a number of methods in use to read meters, but in the case here, a meter reader drives a vehicle along the road, pinging meters via UHF radio to collect data that is used to compute the monthly billing. See: https://www.itron.com/Pages/default.aspx for more. Itron is a large provider of smart meter technology located in Spokane, WA. Trivia: The extensive information on the ARRL site ignores ... or the writer isn't aware ... that PLC / carrier current is widely used, and has been for decades. It uses frequencies in the 50 to 400 kHz range and often spans hundreds of miles for control between switch yards, control centers, etc. The typical power levels are in the 10 watt range, but can switch to several hundred watts to force a signal through the line noise of a switching event. Large RF chokes, several feet in diameter, used to keep PLC signals off lines where they aren't used, can be seen suspended many switch yards and sub-stations. My utility initially used surplus WWII Navy TBL/TBK and RBK/RBK equipment for PLC, and many years ago I bought a RBL receiver still in the crate when the company disposed of this old equipment. To directly answer the initial question of interference from smart meters, I'm not aware of any ... in our case, at least. 73! Re: [Elecraft] [ot] rf from smart meters
Guys, How are we defining smart meters? There appear to be a class which only can be read remotely. Then there appears to be a class which have the ability to control various house heavy current devices (e.g. heat pumps). For all I know the may be only one meter with the ability to connect smart grid controls. I'd guess that these two might have different RFI generating properties after the connections to the various devices being controlled is made. I think of the complaints posted on various reflectors complaining about the RFI produced by new washing machines and heat pumps. The new meter installed here by Progress Energy (remote reading only implemented). They are trying to get people to sign up for the ones which control the heat pump. They are offering customers a measily $25/year credit for connecting the heat pump control option. Apparently the sign up rate for this has been underwhelming. I have not signed up for our all electric house. We currently have no time of day rates for consumers. This quote related to PGE smart meter backlash is consistent with my thinking. The only real way for these meters to reduce the overall cost of electricity is to make it higher priced during times when you need it - so your showers, your computer, the stay at home moms, the elderly, the unemployed will all pay more for using electricity during the day time. There is no additional cost associated with not having a smart meter. (unless you are assuming mandatory curtailments of the availability of electricity through these meters). -- by the way, who do you suppose pays for the costs of electricity while you all are enjoying smart meters at home -- your employer/a business who cannot reduce usage very much during the day (that's when you are working, using the employer's electricity and reading stuff like this online) and therefore pays higher rates. I am not opposed to smart meters but to suggest that some who don't want them will be penalized is totally wrong. Smart meters represent a shift of risk to the businesses and to the stay at home folks - your savings are on the backs of entities who are stuck paying the higher rates and cannot reduce consumption beyond a certain point. Everyone wants to support the concept but few have considered the social and economic implications - something that this publication could do -- they are great for the utilities but the benefits for the public are still unknown. PGE wants the consumer to pay about $200/year to opt out of a smart meter. Ten California counties have even outlawed them. http://ppjg.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/banning-smart-meters/ 73 de Brian/K3KO On 11/29/2011 13:53, John Ragle wrote: At risk of prolonging this thread, I also live in a very quiet location. [Elecraft] digital software
I've used MixW for 7 years, and always been happy with it. However, I'd like to learn from those who have used other similar software. Here's what I use MixW for: It maintains my log, transmits/receives CW, RTTY and PSK, serves as a voice keyer, figures antenna headings and puts them on a display, and has a cluster interface that puts the calls of posted stations on the bandmap/waterfall. It allows extensive macro programming. It has other capabilities but those are the ones I use. I have visited the websites of a number of other programs looking for one with all the same functionality, but I'm not finding it. I'd be grateful for suggestions. 73, Tony KT0NY -- http://www.isb.edu/faculty/facultydir.aspx?ddlFaculty=352 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Tony, I use DXLabs. I works just great with the K3 and you can configure macro command buttons AND SLIDERS for variable controls. I have tried just about every program I can find and for me at least DXLabs is the best...AND...it is free. You download the Launcher program and from that you can tell it to download and install the various modules (Commander, DXView, DXKeeper, Pathfinder, Propview and WinWarbler). You can run one or any of the modules at the same time. The support is just great from Dave, AA6YQ, and the DXL reflector. Give it a try...if you don't like it, just remove the programs. 73 Greg AB7R On Tue, Nov 29, 2011 at 9:55 AM, Tony Estep estept...@gmail.com wrote: I've used MixW for 7 years, and always been happy with it. Re: [Elecraft] QSK OFF
Let's answer Paul's actual question, Can I turn QSK off? I think you mean require some form of manual PTT before you can send and the answer is Yes. Turn off VOX by holding BAND DOWN. Without manual PTT, when you send, it won't make RF and it will tell you in VFO B. You can assert PTT through the rear panel jack, or with the XMIT function on the front panel and then transmit. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2012 Cal QSO Party 6-7 Oct 2012 - www.cqp.org On 11/29/2011 9:26 AM, Guy Olinger K2AV wrote: It's on the front panel. QSK provides the ability to hear between CW characters (or elements if it's fast enough) while sending. Semi QSK is the ability to go from xmit to rx without touching any controls (i.e. VOX for CW). Re: [Elecraft] K3 suggestion
Tony, The power level is displayed if you change the Power knob even a small amount - just rotate he knob a little to see the current power. The bandwidth graphic already shows the bandwidth in use. While it has some granularity, it is still a good indicator of the DSP bandwidth. The exact bandwidth and/or high-cut, low-cut frequencies (or Shift/Width) are shown in the VFO B display when a change is made. I think what you are requesting is already there. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/29/2011 9:08 PM, ANTHONY JAPHA wrote: It would be great if the power level for the instant band was shown on the display. Re: [Elecraft] K3 suggestion...another
While discussion suggestions... In the CQWW CW on 20m in the evening many of the Russian stations over the polar path had tremendous flutter on their signals. Found it was often easier to copy them with the AGC on slow instead of fast. AGC is about the only rough spot I've found with my K3. And I've read all the write-ups, tried the various settings, played with the rf gain, etc. Guess I've sorta gotten use to it but believe there is still room for improvement. The CQWW experience lead me to this thought: What is the possiblity of having slow/medium/fast AGC settings for cw and separate s/m/f settings for ssb? Currently, for my hearing at least, if I adjust Fast for cw it's often too fast for ssb; if I adjust Slow for ssb it's too slow for cw. And Fast isn't always the best for cw nor is Slow always the best for ssb. 73, Ted W4NZ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net]On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: Tuesday, November 29, 2011 9:35 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 suggestion Tony, The power level is displayed if you change the Power knob even a small amount - just rotate he knob a little to see the current power. [Elecraft] [KPA500] Rear power switch thread
I don't have a KPA500 and wondering what the deal is with turning off the back power switch. Seems to me that if is was to be turned off every time that it would have been placed on the front. I don't want to have to go around the back of my station every time I get up and leave. Does it say in the manual to turn it off? Is there a difference in using that switch vs. turning off power strip feeding it? This topic has been going on for a while. What gives? 73, de Jim KG0KP - Original Message - From: Joe Word joe.n...@gmail.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, November 29, 2011 7:44 PM Subject: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Feature Request [KPA500] It would be great if a front panel light would stay on when the front power switch is off and the back switch is on; I keep forgetting to turn it off. Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Rear power switch thread
Like the K3, the POWER switch on the KPA500 requires that mains voltage be applied so the processor and front panel logic is live. The difference is that rear panel switch on the KPA500. It may be left on indefinitely. Like the K3, there is a very small parasitic power drain required to keep the front panel logic live so the front panel power switch will operate. It sounds like some Hams are taking the concept of keeping all parasitic power drains in their homes to the minimum: unplugging TV sets, microwaves, (newer) washing machines, etc., when they aren't actually in use to avoid this parasitic drain. It does add up and totals a significant amount of the electrical power demand, nationally. I would assume they are unplugging the K3 and any other similar Ham gear as well. Personally, I simply kill the main supply power line to the station. That does the same thing with one switch. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- I don't have a KPA500 and wondering what the deal is with turning off the back power switch. Re: [Elecraft] K3 suggestion...another
Ted. I suggest you stick with the contesters who almost universally use AGC S with the K3. The AGC characteristics for the K3 are more adjustable than for most transceivers (see the K3 menu), and those menu parameters become more important than the AGC attack and decay times. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/29/2011 10:30 PM, Ted Bryant wrote: While discussion suggestions... Re: [Elecraft] K3 suggestion
Strange! My K3 already does both of these things, right from the factory. Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Rear power switch thread
Here in Texas we get a lot of lightning storms that wreak havoc on our electrical grid. In the 12 years I've lived here, I have lost 2 televisions, a microwave and a range to lightning related power issues. I physically disconnect my K Line when not in use.
