The LO on my XV432 transverter seems to be very unstable. I think it's
something more than just temperature drift as the frequency will sometimes
jump by several kHz. It's almost as if the crystal is hunting between
different modes of oscillation.

Larry:
Over the years I have had several intermittent, seemingly inexplicable
problems with the K3 that have been solved simply by doing a EEINT (see K3
manual) and a reload of the firmware. If you haven't found a hardware
problem, this may be worth a try since it doesn't take long to do. Just
True, true, but ---
Ideally, that saved configuration file should be one that was obtained
before the problem came up.
If a configuration file is generated right before the EEINIT, the same
problem may be re-loaded afterwards.
Of course, whether that is true or not depends on the type of
Ian,
Two possibilities occur to me. First, detune the LO inductors L3, L4
and L5 a bit to give you 3 volts maximum at TP1 and see if it stabilizes.
Secondly, try adjusting L4 a bit. It may be that the adjustment of L4
puts the crystal right on the 'hairy' edge of oscillation which would
Wasn't there some issue with the 78L09 at some point? I seem to recall
replacing the low-power versions with standard 7809s .. I'd have to
pop them open to check

Ian,
Does the LO frequency jump if you tap the crystal's can using a plastic
rod such as an alignment tool or pencil? If it does, and if all of the
soldered connections in the LO's circuit are sound, the jump and drift are
most likely caused by some mechanical fault within the crystal
You have to search for EE INIT with the space.

Thanks for all the help and comments received so far, on and off reflector
- I have to say the responsiveness and quality of help on this reflector is
second to none!
To summarise:
1. I have tried detuning L4, along with L3 and L5. L4 is very sensitive as
is probably to be expected, L3 and L5

Speaking of this, I bought some jumpers recently, and I noticed the PL259 plugs
slipped into the SO239 socket too freely, as if no contact.
Rather then bend the pins on the socket, I applied a little solder to the
plug's center conductor and then filed the solder down until it slid into the

I still have two MFJ-949E and one MFJ-901B tuners for sale. Everything else

I have TXinh sent to my K3 to ensure it doesn't transmit during initial
keying or during antenna relay

However, it looks like
it takes the k3 about 450 ms or so after TXINH is removed for the k3 to make
power output.

Without going into a long story why I need this, is there anyway to change the
band decode outputs? Just need to change 6 M to 60 M decode. Probably not
possible by firmware but thought I would ask. I can do it externally but it
would make things easier to have the K3 send the code I want.
I'm not sure this will do what you want done, but there is a KRC2 menu that
affects band decode. See page 57 of the K3 owner's manual.

All,
I have been looking at the XG3 as a alignment tool for
old boat anchor receivers. However, many have IF strips at
455 kHz and lower. The XG3 stops at 1.5 MHz.
Are there any plans to lower the bottom frequency limit
to 100 kHz or lower ? Some boat anchors have a 60 kHz IF
