I'm happy to say that my newly finished serial number 4511 is working
fantastic. The CW only version. Now onto the SSB option. The parts and
packing were just excellent. I hit just two problems that I thought I
should share as this reflector was a really superb searchable help to me.

Noise blankers "punch holes" in the signal by turning the I.F. amplifier On

That works really great for killing noise pulses when they are regular

Not impossible Jim for Rx - a good selection of adequate "FM Receiver" ICs
around. Tx more difficult as you don't want to increase the LO's phase
noise.for CW/SSB - but could be done without touching the VFO. But where do
you put it all without introducing problems?

Hi all,
How good is the Kenwood MC-43S hand microphone with the K2? I have been off
the list for a while, but I seem to remember that it was recommended when
the ssb module first got introduced. I was just wondering how well it does
compared to the Elecraft/Heil MD2.

The K2 has a different total system gain on each band, with highest being
on 40m. So, if you set your S meter to S9 with a certain input on 40m,
then it will read lower on other bands for the same input level.
If I ever want to use the S meter seriously, such as in a single band
contest,

For a limited time we are offering our high performance Elecraft/Heil
MD2 desk microphone at better than a 50% discount. Normally $89, it is
now $39 on our web page order form. This microphone provides excellent
audio quality with the K2. I use mine at home on the PL2T studio arm.

I have not tried it, and it may not work well on an SSB rig due to the
BFO. When I was just a young squirt, we used to slope-detect FM on our
good old Heathkit Benton Harbor Lunchboxes which were broad as a hanger
door, and other AM rceivers(Gooney Boxes, etc.). Worked pretty well,

The fine folks at Elecraft may prove me wrong, but ---
I doubt an FM addition to the K2 would be practical. It may require a wider
bandwidth filter for the IF, likely the addition of a limiter and an FM
detector for the receiver, which likely would be easiest implemented as a
separate IF strip
I set up my K2 S meter per the manual. It appeared to work "normally" with S9+
readings on loud signals. I then borrowed an X-gen and used it to "calibrate"
the S-Meter readings. The "calibrated" settings were much lower than the "per
manual" settings, i.e., a signal that was S-9 would read,
Why wait -- consider that even a kit with a large number of parts goes
together just like any other kit, one part at a time. A large kit just
takes longer to complete, but that does not make it more difficult than a
small kit.
There are checks along the way to check your work up to that point

Any possibility of FM facility for the K2?Preferably on both RX and TX, but
on RX only would be handy especially when using transverters on VHF.

Howdy Lee,
The reason seems obvious to me. The Elecraft rigs are so much fun to

those using lesser rigs. I've tried listening and sending with one of

Why don't you start with something like one of the mini-module kits? That
will give you an idea of what to expect and let you develop your soldering
skills if they are lacking. There are some important things to keep in mind
when building kits. One - the right tools - in particular soldering

John, isn't the OHR WM2 an in-line wattmeter?
If so, do you have it connected to your KX1 antenna jack and to a good dummy

If your 24 foot wire antenna is connected to the WM2 it will *not* show the
correct power. It requires a 50-ohm non-reactive load to read power

Herb,
Please don't be discouraged with the reports of problems you see here on the

them resolve difficulties when they arise. These are exceptions rather than

Hello Herb
Welcome to the wacky world of ham radio. There are a lot of old timers

Lyle, you understand my DSP access problem, but what do you mean by "drill
down to the K2's real time clock menu item and turn it on"?
The K2 (not the KDSP2) must have the real time clock display enabled for
you to see the KDSP2 menus. See "Initial Checkout" on page 18 of the
