Thanks to everybody for your help. I changed the value of R98 from 230 to
560 and now the power output is stable and tracks the called for power
much more consistently too.
5319 is now working perfectly. What a radio!

Charlie,
The mod is not difficult - remove the front panel and separate the board
from the dress panel. Then wrap a bare wire around the threads of the mic
connector, twist it tight, and run one end over to the ground loop on the
left end of the board - solder the wire to the mic connector body
Hi:
It was an accident.
I killed Q3, the MJE182 NPN transistor.
Q4 survived, but are Q3 and Q4 a matched pair, in the same way that Q1
and Q2 are?
In other words, should I be extra careful ordering spares and replace
them both, or will just replacing the broken part be fine?

Hello all,
I guess I'll give my two cents worth concerning DX and pileups.
I've operated as WA3WSJ/KP4, WA3WSJ/C6A, V26ED and VP5ED. I used the

were for CW contests such as CQWWCW. When I operated as VP5ED, I had

Ed,
Good thoughts and well stated.
One critically important thought I believe you might have overlooked.
That is simply this: The DX Station Is In Control of the pileup (or should
be).

Paul,
With 2.4 to 4W out on your KX1 it sounds like you are running the KX1 on
13.8v. Rather than adjusting the power out pot, which has a limited
lifetime according to the manual, try running the KX1 on internal
Lithium batteries (the Energizer ones that Elecraft recommends) and the

I try to be as polite as possible to offenders in
the pile ups. I just don't log them.
If the pile up gets too out of hand, I QRX and get

Hi folks,
can anybody help me with a circuit diagram for a simple pulse-generator
which I can use as test-generator in order to test the function of the
KNB2? I figure 2 transistors will do, but canĀ“t recall the rest.

Hi
I usually just scratch on the metal case of Q22 (the collector) with a
screwdriver while holding it touching the metal shaft. This causes a random
popping that the noise blanker handles nicely. You can switch the blanker on
an off and here a big difference. If you want to build a pulse
A word of caution regarding the amplifiers being discussed. A Canadian
dealer tried marketing these units some time ago and they subsequently
discontinued them because of technical problems. Apparently the

I agree with several who voiced their opinion about what power level the new
amplifier should be. IMHO 400 watts is plenty. I made my own 400 watt PA

Sorry to be a bother, but now I have 4 good SLA batteries to preserve until
needed. I ordered a case (6) for my 3 (2 batteries each) bad UPSs. I let the
smoke out of one, putting the cover back on (I thought it was unplugged), I
fixed one, and one was good anyhow; it had simply been overloaded.

Hi all -
I have a K2 connected to a separate KPA/100 - KAT/100 box. Any frequency
on my rig will tune with an SWR of 1.5 or less EXCEPT in the 7.200 MHz
area where it only hits about 3.7 - 1.0. It seems odd to me that only
such an isolated freq range would do thisso it makes me wonder if

You'll be operating the best ham transceiver you probably ever owned. Why
would you feel bad about that?
Besides ham radio, I love motorcycles. I've owned at least two dozen of
them. I've been able to fix them, modify them and enjoy riding them, and
believe it or not, I didn't build a single one
Tim,
It is likely that your feedline is presenting a very high impedance at that
frequency. The Elecraft tuners do not like to tune high impedances very
well - OTOH, they do not usually have a problem with low impedances.
Try adding about 25 feet of feedline - if the KAT100 then is able to tune
Yep that appears to have done it - thanks Dan - and thanks Don!

I've had it happen. It's not all that uncommon to hear only one side of a
