Let me clarify...A 6M amp only... not as p/o the existing 160-6 amp

This discussion has featured a wide range of viewpoints, but I think there are
several common threads in almost all the postings:

Add the Alternate AF Gain wiring (see application notes on the Elecraft
reflector), and since you must have the front panel board out of its
metal panel to make that wiring change, replace the AF Gain pot at the
same time. A bit of work, but not really very extensive.

Make note that the 4.000 MHz reference oscillator setting that is

There must be a really good reason why amplifiers don't use on-board

My audio pot started acting finicky after only a few weeks of use on the

I swapped it with the RF gain pot.
I adjust the RF gain only a tiny amount anyway in normal use.
Check first to make sure they are the same value.
Some K2s may not have had identical pots.

The AF Gain pot is different than the RF Gain pot in all K2s. The AF
Gain is an audio taper while the RF Gain (and the other 3 pots) are
linear controls.
With that swap, I would expect both the AF Gain and RF Gain controls to
behave funny.

Thank you Don. I think the most confusing part of all was, I was

Garry,
You don't need WWV to do the N6KR method - you can use any reference
signal of known frequency and accuracy. Subtract the BFO frequency from
the VFO frequency and that should be the frequency of your reference -
if it is not, then adjust C22 until that condition is true.. With WWV

Just pointing it out. However, my preference is to keep the power supply
separate. That way you have two fairly simple units, rather than one more
complex unit. Easier to maintain in my opinion.
