My K2 emits a very faint tick sound at the end of each dot and dash - I can hear it if I put my ear near the back of the K3. This happens using the internal keyer and a straight key, although it's extremely hard to hear using a straight key as the mechanical sound from the key itself masks it even when releasing it very gently. It's not coming from the speaker. Have other people noticed this? I wonder what is causing it? The last time this came up, Wayne theorized that it might be the sound of slight mechanical adjustments in the relays as power is redistributed. They aren't being switched, but the coil voltages may be changing slightly, inducing an audible modulation in the electrically shiftable parts. Hunting it down was on his rainy day list :). I'll bet you can program a macro to do that but it would be band specific. The easy way to do it if you are running N1MM is to just enter a 0 in the callsign window. That doesn't work for 17 and 12 because it takes you to 18.000 and 24.000. In N1MM, any 1, 2 or 3 digit number entered in the callsign window takes you that far above the bottom of the band. I don't know about any of the other logging/rig control programs but I bet they do the same. [Elecraft] [K3] No audio output on SSB
Hi, I was playing around with fldigi and flrig to get rig control working with my K3 on my 64-bit Ubuntu laptop (it was working fine before with the 32-bit laptop). I got it to work in the end (using Hamlib, the other options wouldn't work), but somewhere along the way something must have gone wrong in the K3 which I only noticed later. For some reason in SSB mode, either LSB or USB, and on all bands, there is no audio output at all on the headphones and speaker. I am not sure if there is output on Line Out, but I think there might be although I can't remember for sure. The S-meter and all controls function as normally. If I switch to DATA mode, I get the normal output FB, so I know the signal is being received as it should. Also there is nothing wrong in CW mode. After googling this I found an old thread somewhere, where somebody had had a similar problem, but resolved it by restoring a configuration backup to his K3. [Elecraft] OT: Logging Program
I am looking for a logging program to interface with FLDigi. Something from which I can do batch (or auto) uploads to eQSL and LoTW. I have used and am using HRD's Logbook, but HRD is bulky and busy and bloated (no offense). In light of that, for the most part, HRD's Logger is easy unless you have to manually put in stations you've worked. I have been toying with the idea of using the DXLab suite of applications, but I'm afraid I may run into the bloated problem again. I realize it is modular and you only load that which you want to use. However, I like some of the options it gives. Keep in mind, if I contest at all, it is only as a casual contester. As a matter of fact, I'm more likely to just go to the WARC bands on contest weekends as to try and fight the contesters. So, I do not need a fancy, whiz-bang application. However, I would like something that will interface with FLDigi, will do batch uploads, and has some sort of spotting function. It does not need to be geared toward the contester and needs to be minimal cost (or free). Like the K3, the Ameritron QSK-5 uses PIN diodes to perform the T/R function. I hear the same tick from the QSK-5, only louder. Because there's a relay inside the QSK-5, some ops have come to the conclusion that the relay is generating the tick. It's not. The relay is used only for bypass purposes. To prove this, I removed the relay from the unit and the tick remained. As best I can tell, the tick noise is made as the diodes are biased. Now, why that would happen needs to by explained by a semiconductor subject matter expert. Some of the noise may be amplified by the manner in which the diodes are mounted -- much like the transfer of sound from a string bridge to the top plate of a violin. [Elecraft] Issue with K3 EZ and SWR scan running LP Bridge
All - I am a new K3 owner (day 3) who is working to set up the LP Bridge software so I can run multiple control software apps including HRD, K3 EZ, AC Log and eventually when I purchase the LP Panadapter, SDR. I noticed a bug with the SWR scan in K3 EZ when I have it running through LP Bridge. It works fine when it operates solo but SWR readings in the K3 software go to figures like 90 or 150 to 1 with the LP Bridge operating. On the display of the K3 SWR readings are fine. Has anyone run into this? I am not sure if there are other issues it with the K3 EZ software operating in this mode with LP Bridge because this is the first bug that I have encountered so far. Any advice or counsel will be very much appreciated. Hi Bob, To get that display, you need to be in Fixed-Tune display mode. When it shows +- frequencies, it is in Tracking mode. Tap Menu, select FixTrack, and tap the knob to toggle between the two displays. The answer is found in the Rev B P3 manual on pages 18 and 19, it varies by tuning mode. In tracking mode the right and left labels display frequencies in terms of their offset from the center, and in fixed-tune mode they are actual RF frequencies that correspond to the left and right edges of the display, rather than the frequency offsets from the center. Beta Releases of K3 firmware are released as .zip files and are not automatically recognized by K3Utility. We do this as an extra step to insure those loading the release understand this is beta test firmware for user testing, and it not a formal release of K3 firmware. It has already been tested here, so it is usually very stable. The simplest way to use this is to connect the two K3s together using a null modem cable at the RS232 ports. Note that the controlling K3 can have a totally different configuration from the remote K3. It could be a K3/10 with no options, for example, yet it could still control a remote K3 with all options, including sub receiver, KPA500, etc. To use Remote-Rig mode, set both K3s to 38.4 kb and connect them together via the RS232 ports (possibly using an intermediary device like RemoteRig for control and Voip over local nets or the internet). Next, at the local K3, hold CONFIG until you see TERM on VFO B. If the remote K3 is listening, the TERM message will be replaced with a display that looks exactly like the remote K3's. (RemoteRig remote control systems with the latest firmware will do this automatically when connected to the control K3. Holding MENU is not necessary) From then on, the remote K3 can be controlled by the local one (the remote K3 can still be controlled with its own front panel, too). The local K3's audio will be muted. Both receive and transmit audio must be handled by the intermediary device (RemoteRig etc.)To exit Remote-Rig mode, hold CONFIG on the local K3 until you see NORM flashed on VFO B. The local K3 will return to normal operation. (Or, in the case of K3's and RemoteRig units, powering down the K3 will disconnect and power down the remote K3.) [Elecraft] K3 TX Inhibit
Hello I have a question about the TX INHibit function of the K3. I want to use this with an external sequencer to ensure that my rig, amplifier and masthead preamplifier (on 2m) are controlled in a safe manner, and that even pressing the XMIT button or turning on VOX does not lead to a mishap. However, TX INHibit does not work as I expected:- I have turned on TX INH with LO = INH. I have plugged a lead into the 15 pin accessory socket so that pin 7 can be held low (in my test case, connected to earth). That works fine and TX is inhibited (indicated by the flashing TX icon). When I remove the earth connection from pin 7 the rig remains with TX inhibited - that's the bit I don't understand. I can only get back to normal transmit operation by going back into the CONFIG menu and turning off TX INH. What am I missing ? Hi John, when TX INH ist set to LO in the Menu an external pull-up resistor between abt. 2.2 to 10 kOhm (to 5 VDC) is required at pin 7. This should solve your problem. [Elecraft] K2/100 S/N 6750 For Sale
Elecraft K2 SN6750; KPA100 Internal Amp; KSB2; KNB2; KDSP2; 10W and 100W dummy loads; Heil Headset/Mic; N3ZN ZN-9 Key, Black; External Cables This radio was sold earlier but the buyer complained of output power spikes. I refunded the payment and sent the K2/100 to Elecraft for repair (Don Wilhelm W3FPR). He discovered that an IC in the Power Meter was not performing properly and so replaced the IC. He did a lot of cosmetic work that basically was not covered in the Elecraft build manuals. The bottom line is the K2/100 is now better than when I completed the build. I am asking $1100 for the package. I will include a copy of the Elecraft repair report. Please ask questions and thanks for looking. John, That is how most all prosigns should be sent. Not as individual letters, but with no spaces between. If you look at properly typeset prosigns, you will see them represented with a bar over the top - that means what is represented by the letters shown is only a representation - send the elements all run together rather than as separate letters. You send the AS prosign as didahdididit, KN as dahdidahdahdit, etc. In emails and other text formats, it is difficult to represent the bar over the characters unless graphics are used.
