I am going to send this out to both reflectors, Elecraft and MicroHam because I
am not sure where I have set up the system incorrectly. The system does work
intermittently and I have had successful QSOs with it on both CW and digital

Did you find your problem? Any fault codes?
I suggest contacting supp...@elecraft.com, but if were me, I'd check all
internal connections first and do a quick visual. I suspect a problem
with the elaborate TR switching circuit or something that controls it.

I cna perhaps help with your inability to get 4 bars on the ALC meter

I suspect you are connected to the K3 Line In jack. That means it
Issue: I have intermittent performance with the USB 3 and my k3. At

up locking up on transmit and I usually have to exit out of FLDigi to
stop the transmit cycle as none of the buttons will work. This has

I had the damnest time getting my K2 and usb converter to work. Check all
params baud rates, com port #'s and nothing. Blue screen of death is
usually caused by a wrong chip set. Update drivers make sure you are using
FTDI chip set. This is my advise, but more info needed such as rig, brand
Thanks, Gerald. Apparently the Keyspan uses a TI chipset and I did try
their latest drivers. BTW, I have a K3 (connected via P3) on the serial
cable.

If I use the tuner into 50 ohms it finds a match but when I

Greetings,
My K3 just returned from the Elecraft after being serviced. I have not been
able to get it to send audio. I believe the rig is transmitting as I tune
the antenna and the transmitter keys up during the tune cycle from the auto
antenna tuner.
When I key the mic - there is no
Hi Keith.
Have you tried without the Y-cable?
Have you tried with lower output?
I think that either the Y-cable is messig up things, or that you have an RFI
problem.
There are no definitive answer of what the positions on the volum knobs on the
front shall be as they have to be adjusted
Martin,
I had it working on my other K3 real well with DM780 except for CW and then
when I wanted to get CW working it seemed to mess with digital modes. The Y

thanks for the suggestion John. I tried it but it didn't allow calibration
to occur.
However I noticed that after the ATU tuned the 50 ohm load the rig showed
high SWR (4.1:1 or so) when I manually keyed it. Also on the bands the
power output it good, the Current drawn is shown as 2.3 Amps,

Hi Joe,
Thanks for that analysis! It makes the situation clear to me: The FM filter
will do just fine for AM and ESSB, and I can free up a filter slot for a
narrow CW filter.
Wayne, it would be great to have this option. I hardly ever use ESSB or AM
TX, so I can't really justify having a filter
*Joe,
Thanks for taking the time to conduct the tests.
Now that I understand what the rationale for the request to Wayne, I am of
the same mind also.
As I use the FM filter rarely I would also be able to free up a filter slot
and add an additional narrow filter which would be good for me also.
Gary,
Joe did testing on a sample size of one K3. While manufacturing of K3s
can produce units that behave close to the average, I think it would be
wise to test on a greater number of K3s with different configurations.
In addition some testing of K3s under fault conditions should be done

Mark,
There is one possibility of a loose connection in the ground path for
the antenna connectors.
At the upper right-rear corner of the K3 there is a 2D connector, a long
screw and a standoff is fastened to the threads of that long screw.
The tightness of that standoff is important to the

There is a known firmware issue which causes the K3 to sometimes forget

want, then I hit RCL again - the scan function is not aware that I made
I experience a similar thing. With KPA500 BAND CHG set to STBY and

Fred,
It would be very difficult to measure the out of band noise in the
presence of a 100W PEP multi-tone audio signal. Much of the opposite
sideband noise would be masked by amplifier IMD which measures -29 dB
(3rd order) to -51 dB (9th order) relative to PEP in the ARRL lab (QST,
January, 2009).
Joe,
That information on the sample of two is good, but since there is
variation between them, that is reason for me to suggest additional
testing - it takes 3 to vote on the correct answer and several more to
determine an average.
Joe, that was very good work, and the test setup is not
