Good Evening,
It has been a cool and thankfully smoke free week. The alder trees
are starting to lose their leaves. Black berries are plentiful,
huckleberries are few, with ever more bear berries. The latter are
bringing more grouse. I actually saw a bear eating them once. I
thought I

Geert,
From your description of the "straight connections" and round plug, I
believe you are referring to the MH4 - the original question was about
the MH3 which has a 1/8 inch TRRS plug and resistors in the microphone
for the buttons.
The MH4 is usable with the K2 and K3, the MH3 is usable
Jerry,
It sounds like some RF from the KPA100 could be getting into the base K2.
Is your KPA100 upgraded with the latest updates, AND the new shield?
For the latest update, peek between the shield and the board - If you
see blue toroid cores at RFC1 and L16, then it is up to date - OTOH, if
Jerry,
As I understand it, about 5000 ohms is a goal when deploying common mode
chokes. Hence why K9YC says multiple turns through a core is needed. Sometimes
multiple cores in series.
But as I read you email, I think I’d focus on what’s different or amiss with
the K2 since the other rigs
Jerry: Make sure your amp "lid" is securely bonded to the base K2. I
have an early K2 and had the same kind of symptoms as you did when I
added the amp lid. I finally traced it to significant paint over spray
on the K2 side panels. I ended up sanding them clean and the problem
disappeared.

This is only a good choke at VHF. If your problem is HF, multiple turns

Hi Elecraft list & Bob,
Sigh. Sometimes it don't pay to get up in the morning.
First, I was having a CW QSO on 40M with a station in the East Coast...
My K2/10 was driving the Tiny Linear - we were seeing 150W on the meter.
Suddenly, the screen of the linear flashed bright white, and the RF
Factors for 40 seem to be:
1. There's often mixed digital in the 7032-7035 area, sometimes it pops
up anytime a CW signal shows up [see 14230].
2. QRP freqs can be non-productive for SOTA folks who often need to
make a number of quick QSO's and get off the mountain. They're also

I believe 7.030 is the normal QRP CW frequency, at least in NA. There are a
lot of SOTA and POTA activators who seem to choose 7.060.

The longstanding QRP frequency for 40 has been 7040-European 7030.

Thanks again for all the MH3 mic case info. I'll see what Elecraft have to say,
especially as they've had a 'rash' of these problems as Don suggests.
If all else fails I can try gluing again, or just drilling through both halves
and bolting them together. Or looking on ebay for an identical
The Portable Operators Challenge is a good excuse to break out that KX2 or
KX3 and get outside, but fixed stations are welcome as well. Exchange is
your grid square.
Since the rules allow self spotting, my KX2 and I are portable in
Minnesota, calling CQ around 14.210 until 1959z or my battery
I have been working on a 3D printed stand for my KX2.
I am wondering if some other KX2 users might be interested in a stand..
If anyone would like to see what it looks like,

Does anyone know if Elecraft sell replacement cases for this expensive
microphone? I've barely used mine (I'm a CW chap) and it's already fallen
apart! The three plastic internal mounting pillars have snapped off. I guess
it's been dropped, but only on to carpet and I'm minded to think a

I used to park somewhere between 7033 and 7035 overnight and would
always hear something going on it seemed. Perhaps I need to revisit
that practice.

Those with dual receive can also monitor the FISTS frequencies, usually 2
KHz below the QRP ones.
In Europe 3558 and 7028 are popular FISTS watering holes, be prepared for
long “ragchew” QSOs on there…
