[Elecraft] KPA 500 Question

2023-11-13 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
I am trying to use my K3 and a Yaesu FTDX10 with my KPA 500. I have cables
that control the amplifier for each radio. What can I use for a switch box to
switch the cables into the amp? A VGA switch did not work.   Doug K6JEY

[Elecraft] Help on KX2 Encoder

Hi all, The encoder on the KX2 is turning very roughly. I suspect it got hit

the encoder?

[Elecraft] An FT8 Radio- just dreaming

2021-02-21 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
I have been wondering for some time- How will FT8 change ham radio equipment?
Right off I imagine a radio and computer in one box maybe with the display.
(FT8 should vastly simplify the first interface with the radio, with menus
reaching deeper into its control. Most of today's designs are not well enough
integrated and I think are hampered by preconceptions. Nor do they take
advantage of graphic user interfaces that are common in say cell phones.  I
think it could be one box with voice and touch control with keyboard and mouse
optional. How about an internal projector so that the screen can be projected
onto another surface making monitors optional? If it is going to be worth it,
It has to be not different but do things differently.
Has anyone else had any thoughts?

[Elecraft] K3 and ALS1306 Amplifier ALC

2020-01-24 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi, I need some help. I have a K3, the DB9 interface cable and an ALS (MFJ)1306
amplifier. I need to know if the amplifier handles power fold back for SWR by
itself or needs to connect to the K3. Question 2 is whether the cable allows
this.  I know there is a setting in the K3 for external ALC control.
What is the proper way to set it up and provide ALC and SWR foldback?

[Elecraft] Reaching Across the Chronological Divide

2019-12-23 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
A few observations.

We cannot think of the problem in passive terms. New hams will not come to
us in great numbers.
We need to go to them.
We need hams to help teachers set up and run ham clubs in schools.
(Collaborate)    We need to appear at events like Maker Faire and present ham
radio in a new light. Some of our local group started, "Not your dad's ham
radio" at the Faire. The Dorthy Grant Elementary School in Fontana is also
another good example.
We could specifically interface with national youth-serving agencies and
start or enlarge programs. How about a Sota/QRP activity that we develop with
specific local groups?
What not to do- We had a science day a few years ago and had someone
set up a field day operation. Unfortunately, he set up the radios so that he
faced away from visitors and did not have a separate person to explain what was
going on. No one was interested.  We have done ham radio demonstrations and
information booths at dozens of fairs for years. Not a single new ham has made
themselves known from those events. Obviously we were doing the wrong thing at
the wrong place and probably in the wrong way.
We have put lots of effort into outreach. We have done what seemed to be
the right thing, without analyzing whether it really was the right thing. Most
nonprofit groups spend huge amounts of money and time in this area with little
to show for it.
We need to reach out to groups and form partnerships that work.  One
organizational technique I am using in my area is to establish "daughter"
clubs. These are smaller clubs or groups that we specifically help with
equipment and expertise to help them realize their goals. There is a specific
board member in our club that talks directly to a leader in the other club. It
seems to work.       Lastly, we must not sit on the sidelines deftly approving
of what others are doing. We need to be part of it. If there is a program that
is working, help keep it going.

(My EdD. research was in this area.)
  Hope the latter helps,

[Elecraft] Handedness

Just a peripheral note- the K3 seems not to have a handedness. It works fine

Re: [Elecraft] Ideas for an FT8 Radio

2018-12-30 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi Jeff, Good ideas all around. Of course i was thinking of the KX2 and a
tablet. I actually went portable in the with that setup. What I didn't like was
all the wires and the USB box. If I could get straight from the KX2 to the
tablet with audio and rig control that might do the trick. What do you think?

There are plenty of good mini keyboard/trackpads units already out there, so
use one of those. Since you are using an external keyboard, skip the complexity
of a swivel screen. A kickstand would be nice though. You said all mode but
it's an FT8 radio so keep it that way; you could maybe include CW if it is
easy. It will also need a stable clock...
There are more powerful options for CPU nowadays than Raspberry Pi. If you
think ahead, this unit could have enough oomph for future digi modes.
If it was a solder kit I'd probably be in for one. 5-10W with an option for
more watts sounds okay for that.
Or just port WSJT-X to a tablet computer and use it with a KX2. ;) 73 and happy

[Elecraft] FT 8 RU Contest and the P3

2018-12-01 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi, Just a note on operating in the RU contest. There are stations in groups in
a number of places on the band. The P3/PX3 sure comes in handy going between
them. Using the markers you can easily mark a group with marker A and tune to
them, and go back easily, because you can see the FT8 groups easily.
Has anyone else come up with any operating tips? This is the first time,
I think, we have experienced the use of different frequencies on the same
band. Now we need a MAP65 program that will read the whole band.

We are watching it shake out before our eyes.

[Elecraft] K3S VS: IC-7300

2018-07-04 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Just to add- If you bought an IC7600, to upgrade  you would have to buy an
IC7610 and take a bath on the old radio. Mfgrs. have played the game for years.
Sometimes if the upgrade is significant it is worth it, like a Drake R4c to
TR7.  To state the obvious, the upgrade from K3 to K3s was pretty painless. I
selected the items I wanted to upgrade and have as close to a K3s as I like.
Resale value? Check at my SK estate sale. The Drakes will be there too. 73,

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] FT8 Here's My Comparison of FT8 and Regular Modes

2018-07-03 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft

Hi All,

I was thinking about the differences between using the digital modes on HF
andKnob and Dial modes, and I came up with this comparison.

Basically ft8 and digital modes take morework on the setup end and are
easy to operate and "knob and dial"radios have little setup and the most time
is spent directing the operation. Both take the same amount of effort but are
inverse.
My limited math abilities express then relationship as-

  Dm(S10τ+Oτ)=K

  Kd(Sτ+O10τ)=K

Where Dm=Digital Mode  Kd=Knoband Dial radios  S= Setup
  O=Operating  τ= Time K= Total effort

[Elecraft] Panadapter Symmetry Question

2018-01-08 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi, I have been noticing that on my P3 and on an SDR IQ hooked to the iF output
of either of two K3's,  that there is a small difference in level from one side
of zero beat to the other. The noise is about five db higher on the high
frequency side than on the lower side. Same on two different K3's, both with
upgraded PLL's. I know it is minor, but I am using the K3 as a back end for my
EME station and the higher noise tends to cover some signals.  Anyone else
noticed it? Any fixes or adjustments?   JPEG available.    Thanks, Doug K6JEY

[Elecraft] HRO Story

2017-09-03 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi Ron, What a great story- the soul of ham radio. I had similar similar
experiences.  Fellow hams gave me stuff or sold it for little, just to give me
the experience of getting on the air. I hope that that still happens.  I am
involved with the microwavers both terrestrial and EME and that spirit is
strong. Part of it is that if we don't get others on, say 5Ghz, there is no one
else to talk with. There is more to it, though. I think it has to do with how
it feels to have your first QSO or DX, or whatever gets you excited, and
wanting others to have the same experience.
You are right about the early HRO's, it was a screw change that changed the
bandwidth and developed into the funny butterfly swivel. Very similar idea.
I'd like to think that Elecraft designers had a similar approach to the guys
who developed the HRO and ACS with their economy of parts and innovative and
careful engineering- separated by 60years or so.
Thanks for responding and for you story. Doug

[Elecraft] What technical similarity do HRO receivers and Elecraft receivers share that is unique? - Answer

2017-09-03 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi Don and others-   Ok.Here is my answer-  I don't think I am far off by
saying that the unique similarity it is in using switched components to effect
frequency coverage of the same tuning coil. In the HRO they had clips you could
change over to go to "bandspread" mode on each coil assembly, Elecraft uses
relays (switches) to change capacitor values in their bandpass filters so that
the same assembly can cover two ranges. Essentially the same thing. I don't
think any other companies have used this technique as extensively as National
and Elecraft.
    Your opinion may vary.    Doug

the IF output level.   Doug K6JEY

[Elecraft] Transverter Interace Question

2017-05-22 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
I am trying to make a Kuhne 23cm transverter work with my K3 with a KXV3B
transverter interface. I have it mostly set up on an IF of 28MHz  and as
transverter 2. The Kuhne wants a watt or so to drive it. The problem is that it
looks like to get a watt out of the K3, I need to have it hooked up to the main
antenna instead of the KXV3B. The problem I see is that if I forget that the
transverter is hooked up to Ant 1 and go on HF it looks like I'll blow the
transverter.
The work around I have figured out so far is to use the transverter on Ant.2
and HF on Ant. 1, since the antenna is memorized on a per band basis, that
might keep me out of trouble. This K3 is a spare and only rarely used on HF.
Has anyone else figured out a different way? Will this work? Any other
ideas?
    Thanks, Doug K6JEY

[Elecraft] P3 VGA Question

2017-05-11 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
I know the resolution is better on a VGA monitor than on the original P3
display. I also know that the VGA monitor has more pixels in the horizontal
dimension than the P3. However it is obvious to me that the digital processing
for the VGA provides much better resolution than the P3. My question how it is
done? Does the VGA FPGA have more bins?  Or some other SDR/display design?
Thanks, Doug K6JEY

[Elecraft] Portable Antenna

2017-04-02 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Well,  this works the best for me for portable.
From the ground up- a speaker stand, a 15' painter pole, a right angle pole
to antenna mount, a "gum drop" antenna mount, a ham stick and two 20m radials.
This works for 14MHz and up as the ham sticks are a good portion of a quarter
wave.  When out in the clear it is an excellent antenna. My second antenna is a
Buddi stick and two radials. It is smaller and easier to transport. Used the
last time on a 9th story balcony.
Your results may vary. Doug K6JEY

[Elecraft] KX2 Weighted Knob

2017-03-30 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi,
Well, I might have done it. I like a little heavier knob on my radios. Ever
since I had an HRO radio.
I took the KX2 knob and put 4 nuts in each of the four bins in the back of
the knob. I took some modeling clay and forced it in to hold the nuts and to
give more weight. I think that is just about perfect for weight and inertia.
Comments?

[Elecraft] KX3/KX2 Suggestions

2017-03-30 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi Wayne, et al.- Lots of good ideas. The only one I keep thinking of is a
little more hefty tuning knob, especially for the KX2. I don't mean a lead
knob, just one with a little more mass and better feel. Maybe someone makes one
already? Except for that, I can't think of much. I have both radios and enjoy
them a great deal and have no frustrations with the radios.   Doug K6jEY

[Elecraft] More Eclipse Information

2017-02-19 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Activity for the Aug 21 total solar eclipse is developing. Interest in doing
propagation studies to explore the effect of totality on radio wave propagation
seems to be of particular interest.
The activity I am going to do is to set up a station at center line and
stimulate the reverse beacon network. The change in received level is easily
recorded by the network. The eclipse is only 2.5min long, so there is not going
to be much data. One might also want to monitor signals that ordinarily would
propagate through the path of totality.
I mention the efforts here because a KX2 and small antenna would not add to
the eclipse baggage and may provide a source of data that could be interesting.
Here is a link to some of the events during the eclipse. Others are easily
found with a search of the internet. Feel free to contact me directly.  Doug

[Elecraft] KX2 Happiness

2017-02-19 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
I got my KX2 on Thursday (It fills out a pretty big Elecraft "stable"). I got
on the ARRL CW DX contest with a dipole and 2 element beam at 25'. I was able
to work all continents on 10watts. Europe was the most difficult. I worked a
bunch of JA's on 40 at night.  I ended up using one of my Begali paddles with
the rig. (I think it weighs more than the radio!) The interface with N1MM was
simple and works very well. The receiver is very strong and only got clicks
from stations a  hundred hz away.
Here's what I liked the most. The filter and NB buttons are next to the
volume and selectivity knob. And on the left side.  (Probably because I am a
leftie) I like the band switch. The peg is perfect  The radio barely got warm
all day/night. I tried driving my Ameritron 1306 with it and got 300w output.
It helped on a few contacts. Very happy with the radio. Way to go E'craft!
I like the suggestion of the MFJ whip on 20. Is it better than the Maldol?

[Elecraft] KX3 Rechargable Batteries

be easy but don't want to narf things up. I haven't done any macros before and
could use a little tutoring. Thanks, Doug K6JEY

[Elecraft] Trouble with KX3 on RTTY

2016-07-03 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi, Even following Kady's book, I can't get the KX3 to decode RTTY this
weekend. Does anyone have hints on the setup?  (I put the Kx3 in USB, hit data
and set it to 45baud AFSK A and decode text.)  With lots of tuning, I get
gibberish. S meter is in dual peak mode. Thanks for any help. de Doug K6JEY

[Elecraft] Test Data on the temperature compensated KX3

2016-02-24 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hello again,
I did a couple of runs on the Kx3 with 50 seconds on TX and then reading
the frequency drift at 144.000MHz.  Here is what I found out. My question is
whether it is good enough for JT mode on that frequency. Let me also sat that
the stability at the HF bands is very good. This is for 2meters.

• Usingthe audio counter as a reference• Itransmitted for 50 seconds
and recorded the drift over the next two minutes. • Between10 and 50seconds
it drifted 60hz on rx• After50sec. the drift went to less than 1hz/sec.
tapering off to little or no driftafter 1min 10sec. • Thiswas done in
ambient air at about 23deg C.    Testing done at 2w and .5w and tests at 12 and
14v input voltage showed no effect on drift.
I would be curious what others have found.

[Elecraft] Kx3 Px3 Temperature Compensation

2016-02-24 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
It took two tries, but finally got traces and frequency stability good enough
on my Kx3 for JT mode on 2 meters, using the internal 2m transverter. TX/RX
recovery at 2w output showed minimal frequency change for a few seconds.I used
the Px3 to evaluate the frequency of the signal generator over time. (Spectra
view or other SDR from the radio would also work.) I also used an audio
frequency counter to monitor the stability of the cw note. I think it took two
runs because by the second time, I was familiar with what the radio would do
and was familiar with the functions. Anyway second time was the charm.
I have photos of the Px3 from the first and second run. quite a difference.
The radio went from unusable for that mode to very usable. Contact me off list
if you want to see them. Doug K6JEY (drzarko...@yahoo.com)
