[Elecraft] KIO3-B Sound w/ Faros

2020-04-12 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I updated my K3 to the KIO3-B USB/Sound card. When I try to monitor beacons
using Faros and set the audio to the K3 Soundcard, the application locks up
the scanning, waterfall and I show the red icon for the sound card. Has
anybody else had this challenge and found a resolution? Using a line-out
audio to my computer soundcard still works, but that defeats the purpose of
having the KIO3-B.

Thanks,

Jim - W6VAR

Is there a receive equivalent of the TE (transmit EQ) command for setting the

[Elecraft] K3/KX3 Delay Macro Execution

2013-10-28 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I find I setup my radio in a portable environment a lot with different
antennas. I like to clear all the ATU memories for each band when I setup.

I created a macro that selects each antenna and clears the ATU memories on a
band and move up one band. However, if I try to run this as a single macro
11 times for each of the bands, it doesn't complete (I'm guessing because
the macro is being fed faster than the radio can react OR I'm exceeding the
maximum macro length). Is there a way to insert a one or two second pause
between steps or is there a better approach?

Macro for clearing one band of memories and moving up one band

[Elecraft] KX3 General Coverage

2013-10-25 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I noticed when listening to AM broadcast stations that receive sensitivity
drops, but when I go to the ATU and set it for Not-Installed, the signal
strength gets much stronger.

Should I uninstall the ATU whenever I'm listening to general coverage or
is there a way to disengage the circuitry that seems to attenuate these
signals when we are in the general coverage area?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - 10M High Current

Guess I should read the manual. Apparently KX3 is only good for 8 watts on 12

seems to solve the issue.

[Elecraft] KX3 - 10M High Current

2013-10-16 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I just put up a 10M dipole at 16' with a BL2 at the center feed. The AIM4170
says it all checks out good with a low SWR (1.5) and this is confirmed in
bypass mode with the KX3. I'm operating using a fully charged 10Ah SLA
battery with a short, thick power cable...12.7 Volts

When I try to run 10 watts, I get the high current warning when operating or
when I press tune and the unit goes back down to 5 watts. When I hook the
antenna up to my K3, I get no such warnings and it runs 100 watts just fine.

Firmware is 1.61.

I've seen other issues on the reflector for 6 meters which some have
resolved with firmware updates. Anyone else having this issue?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 S meter calibration

As others have said, waiting for the FW upgrade to allow ABS (Absolute)
metering.

My KX3 Reads correct on 20 meters with the preamp on. 40 and 80 meters show
S2 instead of S3 and S8 instead of S9.

I hope the new firmware will allow calibration as well, since mine is off a
bit.

[Elecraft] KX3 Receive Noise

2013-05-25 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I haven't used my KX3 in a while and updated the firmware. In CW mode, I
notice there is substantial receiver noise at low volume with headphones.
The noise appears to be more active when a received CW signal is present.
Also, activating the attenuator also increases the noise and distortion.

The received CW tone also seems to get tinny and distorted at minimum
volume. ie - at zero volume, it is quiet, turn up just enough to start DSP
hiss (AF-1). Turning up the volume tends to drown out the noise, but it is
WAY to loud in my earbuds...I only need the lowest AF setting to hear just
fine.

Thoughts?

[Elecraft] KX3 Loss of Signal Strength

2013-03-31 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I haven't used my KX3 much since getting it last year, but I brought it to my
in-laws for Easter and hooked up my Pac-12 antenna. On 40 meters, I've been
getting a strange popping in the signal level. I've also noticed that the
signal drops from about an S5 and strong background noise in the audio to
becomming very subdued and S1 or less. If I hit the TUNE button momentarily
to transmit, the signal goes back up once the radio goes back to receive.

Any thoughts?

[Elecraft] KX3 Wire Antenna

2012-10-29 Thread Jim - W6VAR
This weekend I took my KX3 on a camping trip and used the 24' wire antenna
and 16' / 33' counterpoise wires I used for my KX1.

I was able to tune reasonably well on 20 meters and even 30, but was unable
to tune less than 3:1 on 40. Wayne used to recommend 24-28' for the KX1.
What length are people finding success with matching using the KX3 tuner?

[Elecraft] K3 CW Decode FW 04.51

2012-09-24 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I updated firmware a few weeks ago and recntly noticed the CW decode feature
appears to be working differently.

I used to be able to adjust the threshold on band noise until the flickering
stopped and a signal would cause the indicator to flicker.

Now, the indicator flickers regardless of the setting on band noise and
spews unintelligible characters accross the display until a signal is
detected, then it decodes and the indicator looks correct, until there is a
sufficient pause at which point the indicator flickers again and more
jibberish is displayed.

Has anyone else experienced this?

[Elecraft] KX3 I/Q Sidetone with NaP3

2012-09-15 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I've noticed that the CW sidetone always comes in above the VFO frequency or
the VFO +- the CW pitch by the amount of the pitch.

For instance, if the VFO is set to 7.040.000 and the pitch is set to 600 on
the KX3 and in the Options tab of NaP3, the sidetone shows in the waterfall
at 7.040.600. If I adjust the pitch in NaP3 up say, 2K, the grey bar
indicating where NaP3 is tuned moves up 2K, but the sidetone now shows at
7.042.600 and is not in the NaP3 audio.

I've tried setting to auto as well, but it appears no different.

Does anyone know if:
1. This is a NaP3 bug
2. The KX3 is injecting the sidetone into the I/Q off frequency by the pitch
3. The unthinkable, I'm thinking about his all wrong and this is precisely
the way it is supposed to be :)

Tnx,

Jim

Re: [Elecraft] KX3-MIC COMP Setting / Metering

2012-09-13 Thread Jim - W6VAR
Well,

Mostly because Gary at Elecraft told me he monitors power output since the
ALC meter isn't driving right and that is what he recommends. That is
difficult in the field on batteries because the target power is variable
based on voltage. Also, the meter defaults to ALC when adjusting mic gain
making it hard to see power while adjusting since this can't be overriden.

I'm also concerned about having a dirty, overmodulated signal, so I'm
staying conservative. As near as I can tell, I may be okay with a setting as
low as 10-12, and 1 on compression but others are saying they are driving
with as much gain as 40+ and significanltly higher compression.

This seems to be a pretty broad range for everyone with identical equipment
to be properly adjusted (understanding minor differences may occur with
different voice characteristics)

I haven't had a chance to coordinate a contact with a local friend and I
have difficulty listening to my own voice in a second receiver.

[Elecraft] KX3 + NaP3 Frequency Offset

2012-09-13 Thread Jim - W6VAR
Does anyone know how and when NaP3 adjusts frequency offset when connected
with the KX3?

I've found the waterfall and the KX3 VFO not to be in sync, but after
putting in and removing +-1500 offsets, they then match with all offsets
again indicating zero. I can't seem to issolate the pattern other than if I
chang bands/modes sometimes they are off.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 + NaP3

2012-09-12 Thread Jim - W6VAR
When I connected my KX3 1/Q Output, I had significan nulls every 100
cycles, which I do not experience with my K3 using the same computer/cables.
Running the audio through my Rigblaster's isolation transformers cleaned up
the KX3 signal, which I'm told does not incorporate any isolation due to
space constraints.

Taking my Rigblaster Pro into the field is simply not practical, so I have a
few isolation transormers on order and I will build a small isolation box.
FYI, I tried connecting the Radio Shack ground loop isolator, and it was
ineffective while one of their discontinued 1:1 isolation tranformers is
effective.

[Elecraft] KX3-MIC COMP Setting / Metering

2012-09-12 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I'm curious what MIC GAIN and COMPRESSION settings everyone are using with
the MH3 microphone. ALC metering is quite spotty after getting an initial
peak and compression metering doesn't show much either. Gary tells my to
just adjust for power out, but this is complicated when on battery, because
power is folded back and the metering automatically switches back to
ALC/CMP.

I have made one SSB contact with a MIC setting of 12, and received favorable
audio.

Compression seems to kick on hard listening with the monitor, so a left the
setting at only one.

Hopefully, future firmware will fix the ALC/COMP metering to be smoother and
more responsive like the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 + NaP3

2012-09-12 Thread Jim - W6VAR
Correction, the nulls were on audio, no I/Q. They only exist when using a
stereo cable or jumpering the left and right channels together. If I pass a
mono signal to the computer, they go away.

I tried an isolation transformer with the combined signals, and they didn't
filter it. My guess is the Rigblaster only passes a mono signal.

Turning AFX OFF with a stereo cable does eliminate this.

DATA mode with AFX set to DELAY shows issues with the signal, so AFX does
not appear to be getting turned off with the DATA MODE.

I'm guessing phase cancellation with AFX??? But that is speculaton on my
part.

[Elecraft] KX1 Power / Meter

2012-01-03 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I was just reviewing the power output on my KX1 on various bands and came up
with the following results:

BandInt BattExt BatExt w/Tuner Ext Bat on 40M Doublet
13.8 Volts
20 1.0 3.0 3.0 4.3 3.9
30 1.4 3.9 3.7 1.7 4.6
40 1.5 3.6 3.6 4.7 4.3
80 1.5 3.9 3.7 4.4 4.4

All were into a 50 ohm dummy load except for the 40M ladder line fed doublet
that had a 1:1 balun near the radio. Power readings on a W1 watt meter.

Scenarios:
1. Internal Batteries Energizer Lithium 50 ohm dummy load, tuner bypassed
2. External SLA battery (about 12.5v) 50 ohm dummy load, tuner bypassed
3. Same but with tuner in line
4. External SLA battery with 40M doublet and tuned for a match.
5. 13.8V regulated power supply with 50 ohm dummy load

Initial readings seemed to make sense, but I had the following observations
/ concerns:

1. at 13.8 volts input, the power went over 4 watts on all but 20M, which
was close at 3.9. Is this running too hot and should I reverse the power
output mod or only operate at lower voltages?

2. The power output when the antenna was hooked up went up considerably on
most bands. Why would this happen and should I be concerned?

3. There was a significant difference between the W1 and the KX1 wattmeters
when the antenna was hooked up (several watts), whereas they were within a
few tenths of a watt in the dummy load. Again, anything to worry about? What
could cause this?

Thanks,

Jim - W6VAR

[Elecraft] KX1 2.5 second Beep

2012-01-03 Thread Jim - W6VAR
Something I've never noticed before with my KX1 - when an external battery is
hooked up, i hear a brief audio blip or beep every 2.5 seconds. I don't
recall hearing this before, the only change I've made is putting in lithium
internal batteries. Haven't tried pulling them out yet.

Any thoughts?

[Elecraft] K3 Command Tester

2011-12-22 Thread Jim - W6VAR
I've just started dabbling with K3 Macros. I've been able to save a simple
macro and program PF1 to run it. However, I have not been able to click on
the macro button in the command tester or enter commands in the tester and
have them execute on the K3. Am I either doing something wrong or am I
incorrect that commands can be tested from this window?

Thanks,

Jim

[Elecraft] K3 - Noise over Computer Audio

2010-12-24 Thread Jim - W6VAR

I recently tried monitoring the audio of the K3 via the soundcard (usually I
had this muted). I get one noise when only an audio cable is connected
between the K3 and my laptop. This noise is mostly attenuated when I connect
the KUSB cable. However, as soon as either N1MM or HRD connects to the K3, I
get another set of pulsed noises (I think this is the polling of the K3
data). Each of these noises is eliminated if I connect a ground wire between
the K3 chassis and a metal chasis component of my laptop. (Samples below).

There is no difference if I change to a different laptop, operate the laptop
on AC or battery, change to another USB/COM converter or another audio
cable.

Since grounding fixes this, it appears to me to be a ground loop. My DVM
shows no appreciable impedance between the K3 RS-232 GRND and chassis or the
computer USB ground and chassis (I know it only takes a minimal resistance
to create the potential for a ground loop).

What doesn't make sense to me is why a ground loop would even exist when
ONLY the audio cable is connected as the K3 has isolation transformers.

Any thoughts as to what may be wrong or how I can remedy this? This makes it
rather hard to run my audio through my PC either as a stand alone or when
using a logging program linked to the VFO. I'm also affraid that the errant
current may cause some damage to the K3 or my laptop.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 - 6Watts on 3040

2010-07-26 Thread Jim - W6VAR

Thanks Don,

I go back and forth between the internal and external batteries, so I'm not
crazy about this as the stated life is limited for the potentiometer. Having
said that, I dialed it back to get 4 watts into a dummy load and very weak
power on internal batteries.

Here's the strange part, my home antenna is a coax fed, parallel dipole, so
I need to run the tuner to get a match. When I run through the tuner, to a
non 50 ohm load, my power as indicated on the KX1 goes up to about 5.5
watts! As I recall, it used to ALWAYS go down my some small amount.

Thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 - 6Watts on 3040

2010-07-26 Thread Jim - W6VAR

It seems the power increase is only on 30 where my antenna is less than
perfect. I verified power with a W-1 and the internal watt meter is within
.25 watts on all bands...both say I'm pushing 5.5 - 6 watts with the antenna
connected, 4 watts with a dummy load.

I'll fiddle some more and also play with the toroids...my 20 meter power on
internal batteries is under one watt.

[Elecraft] KX1 - 6Watts on 3040

2010-07-22 Thread Jim - W6VAR

I haven't used my KX1 in a while, but I noticed it is running over 6 watts
when connected to a 13.8 volt power supply on 30 and 40 meters. 20 meters is
about 4.2 watts and 80 meters is between 4.7 and 5.0 watts.

Is this excessive and will it cause damage or a dirty signal? If there is a
problem, where should I begin my search? Internal batteries generate
significanlty lower output:
80M 1.7W; 40M 2.5W; 30M 2.0W; 20M 1.8W

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 beta firmware rev. 3.06: all-mode squelch; SSB power control improved

2009-04-02 Thread Jim - W6VAR

Wayne,

Thank you for the personal email and Elecraft's prompt response to addressing
this issue.

Jim - W6VAR
K3# 1644

K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.05 (with DSP rev 2.12) is now
available. For details, see the release notes below.

Please send any problem reports to k3supp...@elecraft.com. For
instructions on how to load beta firmware, please see:

  http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

We recommend that you use the latest revision of K3 Utility, which can
also be found on the K3 software page.

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 3.06/DSP 2.12 April 1, 2009

* SSB POWER CONTROL: Decreased time that SSB power output takes to
reach target when PWR control adjusted. Also eliminated drive level
change when ATU TUNE is used.

* SQUELCH IN ALL MODES: To use this feature, locate CONFIG:SQ MAIN,
then tap '1' until you see ALL.

To use the SUB RF/SQL pot to control both main and sub squelch, set
CONFIG:SQ MAIN to =SUB POT. (In this case, MAIN RF will control both
main and sub RF GAIN.)

If you want independent control of main and sub squelch, set SQ MAIN
and SQ SUB to numeric values (0 opens the squelch all the way). SQ MAIN
and SQ SUB will then be fully independent. They can be assigned to
programmable function switches if you use them frequently. (In this
case MAIN RF GAIN and SUB RF GAIN are independent, using the lower
concentric pots.)

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 FM Repeater

2009-03-04 Thread Jim - W6VAR

I have K3 #1644 with all hardware mods except the negative ALC and firmware
2.82.

We have a local 6 meter repeater that I can hit from my house with my
handheld on a J-Pole or via my car with an IC-7000. The repeater frequency
is 52.900 with a -500 offset for transmit on 52.400 and the CTSS tone is
114.8. For some reason, my K3 will not trip the repeater, but will trip
other repeaters in the area when set to their attributes.

I've monitored my output signal on my Yaeseu VX7 and verified that I am
indeed transmitting on the correct frequency and I have engaged and
disengage tone squelch on the VX7 to see if the correct CTSS tone is being
transmitted. This appears correct.

I spoke with another indivdual on our 2M repeater and he is experiencing the
same thing with a commercial radio converted to 6M.

Are there any thoughts as to what the attribute of the K3 or the repeater is
that is not allowing the K3 to function properly on this repeater?

[Elecraft] Watt Meter Behavior

2009-01-29 Thread Jim - W6VAR

My watt meter seems to behave strangely in SSB. I've run all the calibrations
and have it hooked to the Elecraft W1 watt meter and 50 ohm dummy load. When
set for 100 watts, I get 100 watts on both the K3 and the W1 on CW key down.
On SSB, the K3 meter regularly exceeds 100 watts, pegging the 120 lines
while the W1 peaks out at 100 watts. I've noticed this for several revision
of firmware.

I also just downloaded verson 2.8 and tried setting the SMTR PK to ON, but
the peak reading doesn't seem to work anymore.

Anyone else have this experience?

[Elecraft] Mods Complete, Auido Worse

2009-01-03 Thread Jim - W6VAR

I just completed the following mods on my K3:
* K3 Synthesizer ALC
* Rear pael RS232 and Audio Connectors (Jumpers to Ground)
* Front Panel Microphone Modification

Using the KDVR, the audio quality has dropped tremendously. My prior
recorded messages had a wide range of fidelity, cut now they are pinched
with somewhat of an RF feedback quality.

What are others experiencng with these mods?

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Memory Recall - Acting Like Band Select

2008-12-28 Thread Jim - W6VAR

Thanks, Barry. This should be true if CONFIG: MEM 0-9 is set to BAND SEL, but
I have it set to NOR. In which case, 0-9 should NOT be in the band select
mode and ALL memories should be accessable with MV ## MV...unless of
course I missed something in the updates :)

Barry Simpson wrote:

 Hi Jim

Memories 0-9 are quick memories which are accessed by the commands M-V and
then the keypad number. I have programmed each of those memories with each
band 160 thru 6 metres so that I can change bands without having to use
 the
up/ down button. I have also programmed the M1 thru M4 buttons to provide
 an
additional four frequencies in each band. In fact you can program VFO A
 and
VFO B separately so that in fact with all of the above I have up to nine
frequencies (each with pre-programmed modes) quickly accessible for each
 band.

However I digress. To access memories 10 and upwards you simply press the
M-V command and then rotate the VFO A knob to get to the memory number you
require. To program a memory with the current VFO A frequency, mode and
selectivity you need to use the V-M command and then either press the
 keypad
number to be programmed (0 thru 9) or rotate VFO A for memories 10 and
upwards to select the number you want and then press V-M again.

 I hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Power Calibration - Transverter

2008-12-26 Thread Jim - W6VAR

Could I have damaged my unit by running it per the manual with no load?

There is mention of attaching a dummy load to the KXV3 Transverter Out in
the K3 Utility's Tx Gain Calibration wizard, and the K3 Utility Help text
for this wizard page says Some versions of the K3 Owner's Manual do not
describe the dummy load requirement for Milliwatt calibration. This will be
corrected in subsequent versions of the K3 Owner's Manual.

When doing the power calibration for the transverter, there is no mention in
the manual of attaching any form of (dummy) load. Is this not necessary due
to the low power level? Wouldn't a specific impedance be necessary to
accuratly calibrate?

I'm not using a trasverter right now, but have run the calibration and would
like to know the correct way of presenting a load if needed.

Thanks,

Also, what is the wizard? I don't recall it ever being mentioned in the manual?

[Elecraft] K3 + Ameritron AL-811

2008-11-07 Thread Jim - W6VAR

K6LRG will be operating my K3 with an AL-811 provided by AF6JG for the SB SS.
Has anyone used this combination that can provide some recomendations for
setup and configuration or cautions that I should be aware of?

Thanks,

Jim

Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio distortion

2008-10-13 Thread Jim - W6VAR

I have the same experience with the Heil Proset ic. Adjustments to TX audio
of 2.4K and 3.2K seem to have the most impact.

I think this topic has fallen into oblivion somehow.
Have been using my MD-7506 for many years now with absolute satisfaction
either for ham purposes or music.
Not so in combination with K3! In fact the audio sounds terrible. I tried
a cheap PC headphones with 32ohm
(MDR-7506 have 64ohm) and they indeed sound much better. Could this be
 because of lower impedance,
  limited frequency response or both?
Is there a solution for the poor guys with too good headphones?

Is anyone else experiencing distortion when using the monitor facility
onSSB ?I experience quite severe distortion when using my Sony MD-7506
headphones, slight distortion with my Heil Pro Set and none with my Yaesu
YH-77ST. Inother words the wider the frequency response of the headphones,
the worsethe distortion. In fact it appears the distortion is a high
frequencycomponent as I can clean it up completely with audio filtering
after theheadphone or speaker output but it should not be there in the
first place. It is there with several different microphones but it does not
appear on thetransmitted signal which is clean. It is not my Sony
headphones which are at fault as using them the audiothrough my TS2000
monitor is absolutely clean.73 Barry Simpson VK2BJ K3 #1397

[Elecraft] NB - DSP/IF

2008-10-13 Thread Jim - W6VAR

I've had my K3 for about a month now and the NR seems to work very well.
However, I have had little luck with either the DSP or IF NB when I hear
what sounds like electrical noise. There does not appear to be significant
differences between any of the settings and I don't detect an appreciable
differrence in audio (which I would at higher levels of DSP).

Thoughts?
