[Elecraft] K1 + Timewave DSP 59+
I'd like to connect the output of my K1 to a Timewave DSP-59+ but have had some difficulty. Tried connecting a 2-pin header plug to the speaker connection on the PC board and hence to the input of the DSP-59+ but regardless of how far I turn up the AF gain on the K1, the DSP fails to indicate enough drive and the audio sounds distorted as if it was amplified signal leakage. There is enough signal for the audio AGC on the DSP to work, however. Advice, counsel, words of wisdom welcome. Also, thanks to Jim K4ZM for finishing and troubleshooting my K1 after I lost some fine motor skills. (motor skills returning, my CW no longer sounds like I'm sending with a loose toggle switch manipulated by my left big toeHI!) 72, Tim Learning Centers - Click Here. http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL2131/fc/BLSrjnsIpv1W0uiGtjMYMFkXOwzJZQYA3jdo1JzwBnEqDrqNkzL0FeeeECE/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K-1 RIT Range mod, audio AGC.
Is there a modification to reduce the RIT range on the K-1 to about +- 1KHz? I'd also be grateful to know of a pot suitable for this mod that had a center detent. Or a multi-turn pot that would fit in the allowed space Also, I'm looking for an outboard audio AGC circuit into about a 2 Watt amp. I find that the sidetone is way too loud when I'm searching for weak signals and have the audio turned up. Am now using a DSP-59+ for the AGC action but it is a bit noisy and physically large. 72, Tim FIRE SALE: iPads for $23.74? [Elecraft] K-1 VFO range jump
My K-1 quit (no TX, no RX) a few months ago and am just now getting around to working on it. It is a 2-band kit with 20 and 40 installed. Originally set up for 7.000-@7.060; 14.000-@14.060. I removed and replaced the filter board. RX, TX fine except the range is now 14.047.3 - 14.075.1 and 7.053.6 - 7.081.3. Spread the turns of L1 and could get to go as low as 7.0361 and as high as 7.0640. These frequencies agree with a good receiver and a good signal source. I'm reluctant to snip off a turn from L1 since it worked fine before with the current number of turns. A concern is the lack of tuning range. VFO OSC is 3.027 - 3.055. I'd be grateful for advice. 72, Tim Colbert K3HX 5 Diet Pills that Work 2012#39;s Top 5 Weight Loss Pills. Updated Consumer Ratings. snip I think I'll locate - or fabricate- some thumbscrews (like the KXPD3) so I can more rapidly remove the access cover and lessen the temptation to leave cells in there. 73, Stan WB2LQF An effective but truly inelegant method is to run a screw through a wingnut. You may need to file the screwhead a bit to reduce the diameter or file clearance for the screwhead on the wingnut. If you use brass components, a little solder will preclude loosening of the wingnut from the screw. Less awful is to use an Allen socket-head screw and the little plastic thingies (hi!) that press over the tops and convert the Allen head screws into thumbscrews. [Elecraft] K-1 power out vs current draw.
Good folk, In the planning stages for this year's field day which I plan to run QRP from a battery. At 12 vdc, how much power will the K-1 deliver? What is the current draw at 12 vdc. At 13.8 vdc, how much current does the K-1 draw to deliver 5 watts out? How low can the voltage be and still have the unit produce a stable output? If there is a chart which shows this kind of voltage vs power out data, I'd be grateful for the link. 72, Tim Do THIS before eating carbs #40;every time#41; 1 EASY tip to increase fat-burning, lower blood sugar decrease fat storage http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3131/52b3454ae5d045492d71st02duc __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I use a change-out (every 3 years) automotive battery and the Harbor Freight 42292 float charger on a venerable 3KW Onan generator. Good service, as the generator never fails to start even after many years. The box claims the 42292 will deal with flooded cell or sealed lead-acid batteries. CW QRQ: Do a fair amount of contesting, almost all of it CW. I do not understand what motivates folk to send a contest CQ at 40+ WPM. This speed is well beyond my abillity and I suspect beyond the capabilities of most folks who do not have a decoder device so I move on to the next station. I've been assured by hard core contesters that this method is needed to keep the QSO rate up. Seems counter-intuitive to me. I have no trouble with those who use variable speed wherein their call and the changing bits of the contest exchange are sent at a slower speed. [Elecraft] LaCrosse Tehcnology UTC Clocks, again.
My experience is that those of the same model number stay in synch. Had a pair of older LaCrosse clocks of identical model number which kept time in synch with each other for years until the POS Ray-O-Vac batteries leaked and messed up things inside both of them. Now have the two latest purchases running and they have been in synch since they got the signal from WWVB. A third one of a different model number (the model that does not do UTC also got the synch signal but is about .5 seconds off. Curious. For those of you interested in horology (not the study of streetwalkers, despite the name) Scientific American has issued a magazine-style publication which goes into some of the more esoteric aspects. [Elecraft] Marking cables.
I've found the Brother "touch system to be inadequate. The labels fade very quickly in sunlight and fade (albeit much more slowly) indoors. For cables both inside and outside, I prefer coloured tape. Scotch 33 is available in standard colours for this purpose and can be purchased at a real hardware store or "big box" retailer. To differentiate between cables, I make the first colour 1.5 times the width of the roll and subsequent colours standard width. For example: cable 45 vs cable 54. Cable 45 would have a wide yellow band and a regular width green band. Cable 54 would have a wide green band and a regular width yellow band. I do not use black or grey tape as they do not contrast well against black or grey cables. I do not use the same colour more than once so the colours can be distinguished. My experience is that violet tape does not stand up to outdoor use as well as the other colours. I use an arbitrary classification system so: Note that there are no same colours on the same cable so there are no lines 22,33,44,55,66,77,88,99. 1x series Lines to HF antennas 2x series Lines between equipment (rig to antenna tuner, for example) 3x series Control lines rotor, remote antenna switch, remote antenna tuner 4x series DC power 5x series AC power 6x series Grounds 7x series Lines to VHF-UHF antennas including repeaters 8x series not used yet 9x series not used yet Should you need additional lines for a specific classification, it is easy to add a 3rd digit with another normal width piece of tape. For example, another HF antenna line could be line 125: wide brown, normal red, normal green. Signal direction of travel can be indicated so: At the source, place the wide band right up to the connector, at the load, place the narrow band(s) right up next to the connector. I made up a table to indicate what goes where: (partial example below) CAPITALS indicate wide band. LINECOLOURS FROM TONOTES 74 VIO - yelIC-7000 HF out 6m beam 8214 64' new 7-2013 75 VIO - grnIC-7000 VHF out 2m beam 8214 56' new 8-2012 I've found it important to date each iteration of the Line sheet to keep track of changes like adding another antenna. In each junction-remote tuner box, there is a waterproofed line sheet copy. I used a laser printer and then spray the sheets with Krylon matte clear until the paper is soaked and then let it hang-dry. I've had good results with this. Inkjet printing will run when it gets wet or even humid. For labeling outdoor objects, metal Dymo tape is hard to beat. The catch is that it is wildly expensive and takes vast amounts of money to purchase the specially constructed die-cast metal lettering tool. I spent half-vast sums of money for mine at a hamfest. The metallic tape comes (came?) in aluminum and stainless steel. UV proof and the adhesive is quite strong. For permanent writing, use a paint-based marker as the common "magic marker" ink is subject to quickly fading. Markal (company name) makes a line of high-quality paint markers as does Nissen. If you state permits it, the xylene-based paints work better than water-based. Check with WW Grainger or Fastenal. These paint markers mark on metal quite well but will flake off anything that flexes. The "Sharpie" metallic markers are suitable only for inside work. I've not had much experience with their "Sharpie" paint markers. 72, Tim Colbert K3HX Protect what matters Floods can happen anywhere. I'd be grateful to get input on what I should ask for it. Unit runs fine, mostly used QRP. I'd sell the speaker without the radio but not the radio without the speaker. Advice, counsel, words of wisdom welcome. 72, Tim Colbert K3HX K3HX HAT JUNO DAUGHT COM The Shocking Truth About Looking Old Beverly Hills Beauty Lab http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3131/582cfddb45d3b7ddb434fst01duc __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I've got 30+ years in military and commercial 2-way radio ranging from just below 40 MHz to over 10 GHz. In that time, I have designed, built, installed, moved, repaired, tuned, modified and replaced over 700 antennas. ("antennae" refer to insect appendages) The counsel of those in the list above agrees with my education and experience and is worthy of your consideration as they know what they are talking about. 73, Tim Colbert K3HX -- Original Message -- From: elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Elecraft Digest, Vol 150, Issue 9 Date: Tue, 11 Oct 2016 10:13:50 -0400 Send Elecraft mailing list submissions to elecraft@mailman.qth.net To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net You can reach the person managing the list at elecraft-ow...@mailman.qth.net When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Elecraft digest..." Do the research There's all kinds of info on how to create/route a feedline for rotator use... Most of the people I know with tall towers and big antennae use LMR-400 (or similar size) AS the "smaller jumper". No reason NOT to use LMR-400 from the antenna to the station... __ Clay Autery, KY5G MONTAC Enterprises (318) 518-1389 On 10/10/2016 5:14 PM, hsherr...@reagan.com wrote: > OK all. [Elecraft] OT: Feedline Question
Message: 4 Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2017 03:31:59 + (UTC) From: Al LoronaTo: "elecraft@mailman.qth.net" Subject: Re: [Elecraft] OT; Feedline question Message-ID: <852881305.2998918.1492486319...@mail.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 If instead of using the relative permittivity of air, 1.00059, for calculations of open-wire line, you use the effective permittivity including any spacers used to homebrew the line, this value will increase slightly. For instance, I am using spacers made of a material called "nylon 6,6 30% glass fiber-reinforced" which happens to have a relative permittivity of 3.9. This has the effect of increasing the effective permittivity between the wires from 1.00059 to 1.08656. Another way of saying this is that the velocity factor goes from 1 (for pure air) to 0.959, or about 96% with the spacers. The effect of this is to make the characteristic impedance of the line drop from around 480 to around 460 ohms. ( See http://www.emclab.cei.uec.ac.jp/xiao/Wire/index.html ) This obsessive exercise on my part illustrates that spacers don't make a whole lot of difference, but they do make a difference. You may want to include their effect or not. Al W6LX OM Al, Thank you for taking the time to share your results on this forum. "That which is not rigorous is meaningless."...Attributed to Blaise Pascal The results may not be significant or even of minor interest to many, but how would we know had this work not be done and presented here. 72, Tim Colbert K3HX "Better Than Adderall" Pill Now Legal For Your State Residents Health Tips Daily http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3131/58f62a48922102a474f94st04duc __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] OT: Martian New Years special event station.
Martian New Years special event station K3M (I'll be using my mighty (?) K-1)will operate tomorrow, 06 May 2017 from @1400-2000 UTC from Mars, PA. We will also be activating W3EXW DStar repeater during the Friday and Saturday event. We will be using REF063A. There will be PSA on REF063C to direct traffic to the REF063A reflector. Mars, PA is about 25 mi north of Pittsburgh, PA. The special event station is in conjunction with the Mars, PA "Martian New Year Festival"which features programs and exhibits from NASA, the Jet Propulsion Lab and the CarnegieScience Center. The phone ops plan to operate @55kHz up from the bottom of the phone band on 40 and 20whilst I'll be banging away @55 kHz up from the bottom of the CW portions of 40 and 20. If you are in the area, NHARC will be operating out of the Miniature RR Pavilion on the groundsof the Historical Society on the south side of town. Look for the red B caboose and 1888train station. We will be behind the train station. From the ARRL Contest Update: The North Hills Amateur Radio Club (NHARC) will be commemorating the Martian New Year with a special event station in Mars, PA, on May 6, 2017, as part of the event. The Martian New Year only happens every couple of years, Earth-time. Though the town features a 'mid century modern' looking gen-you-wine flying saucer, the activities on May 4 - May 6 are focused around STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) activities, and will include NASA participation. Look for their call, K3M, on 20 and 40 meter phone and CW. QSLs go to N2MA. (Tim, K3HX) Marvin may make an appearance!
