Re: [Elecraft] [KX3} Charging internal batteries
Well, that’s one way to do it. On my KX3 I simply turn the VFO B knob until the display is showing PS voltage, or BT voltage, whichever I desire. 73, Arlen - AA7F On Jun 5, 2015, at 8:40 AM, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Gareth, The internal battery voltage does not increase. You have to understand what the VFO voltage reading is telling you. It reads the highest supply voltage, not always the internal battery voltage. If you are looking at the VFO B voltage display, you will see the highest supply voltage applied. So, if your external supply is at a higher voltage than the internal batteries, that voltage is what you will read. If you want to see the voltage of the internal batteries only, you will need to disconnect the external supply. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/5/2015 11:18 AM, Gareth - M5KVK wrote: Seems like there's a bit of a battery theme at the moment. Re: [Elecraft] Clock chip
I’m guilty of starting a thread similar to this one a couple of months back. My K3 clock drifts and, being a newbie, I wasn’t certain whether it was within spec or not. I learned that it is within spec - but I wanted something more accurate - not because I NEED it, but because I thought it might be a fun project. So I designed and built a GPS clock. It uses a $40 GPS module that has a battery-backed clock chip in it (so it keeps reasonable time when there is no GPS satellite lock). It only needs a single GPS satellite for accurate time. I put it out in my garage because my shack is in the basement and GPS coverage is marginal there. It communicates with the display unit via an XBee Series One radio link, updating the display in my shack (driven by an Arduino Uno) about every 200 milliseconds. Is it overkill? Probably. But I had fun designing it, building it, and writing and debugging the code. I’m a ham… I do things like this because it’s fun - and since I’m not selling it I don’t have to worry too much about how practical it is. It’d be nice if the K3 clock was more accurate - but then I wouldn’t have learned about GPS timekeeping, XBees, and driving an I2C display and GPS unit from an Arduino! :-) 73 Arlen, AA7F On Feb 15, 2015, at 5:19 PM, Richard Gillingham w...@hotmail.com wrote: Here in South Florida, atomic clocks will not sync it all. 73, Gil W1RG Sent via the Samsung Galaxy Note® 3, an ATT 4G LTE smartphone div Original message /divdivFrom: Ken G Kopp kengk...@gmail.com /divdivDate:02/15/2015 1:25 PM (GMT-05:00) /divdivTo: Lynn W. Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft[ [K3] Sound card suggestions
Santa dropped off a TASCAM US-125M at my house yesterday. All is good, except I'm perplexed with the settings on the K3. I'm using line out on the K3 (stereo) into the line inputs on the 125M. I have the line level cranked all the way up to 100, but the input level on DM780 (Ham Radio Deluxe) shows an input level of about 29. I'd expect more signal than this. If I run the signal from the K3 line output into the mic input on the 125M I can easily overload the 125M. Shouldn't there be a better signal on the K3 line out? Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this. 73, Arlen - AA7F On Nov 22, 2014, at 09:45, James Bennett w6...@me.com wrote: Ian - FWIW - I replaced my SLUSB several months ago with a TASCAM US-125M external USB sound card. Jim, Sorry to hear that you're under the weather. That cold seems to be going around and people are hanging onto it for weeks. Hope you're about done with it! I appreciate the info you've provided. I'm not using the line out on the Tascam at this point, just the line in. Sounds like it's set up similarly to yours, but I'm wondering what the Config: LIN OUT setting is on your K3. I have mine set to maximum (100), and on the Tascam the Line In is all the way clockwise, and I'm still not getting enough signal. 73, Arlen - AA7f On Dec 26, 2014, at 19:49, James Bennett w6...@me.com wrote: Rough night here - still trying to kick a cold - brain not working too well. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this. 73, Arlen - AA7F On Nov 22, 2014, at 09:45, James Bennett w6...@me.com mailto:w6...@me.com wrote: Ian - FWIW - I replaced my SLUSB several months ago with a TASCAM US-125M external USB sound card. [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 Supply Voltage reading low
Greetings all! My KX3 has the set of internal NiMH batteries and currently reads 9.9v while idling (I haven’t charged the batteries recently). When I power the KX3 from an external 12V SLA battery - which reads 12.2V on my Fluke DMM - the KX3 reports 10.2V while idling. I might expect the KX3 to report slightly less than 12.2V if there is a diode on the supply input (I haven’t checked the schematics), but 2V seems like a significant difference. I’d welcome any feedback from the list on this issue. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 Supply Voltage reading low
Hi Mark, Thanks for the response! I’m guessing that perhaps you’re considering that the voltage of the SLA is sagging when it’s running the KX3. I wondered that too - so I measured across the terminals of the SLA while it was powering the KX3. It still measured 12.2V, so it wasn’t sagging. The battery (and it’s little charger) report it as being fully charged - though I’m dubious about the accuracy of the little wall-wart charger. :-) Arlen AA7F On Aug 15, 2014, at 11:42 AM, rv6am...@yahoo.com wrote: Re: …reads 12.2V on my Fluke DMM - the KX3 reports 10.2V while idling. Arlen, My first thoughts are that you need to fully charge the battery. I don’t have a lot of experience with lead acid batteries, though. The input diode (CMS04 if my memory is correct) should only account for about 0.2v at KX3 receive current levels. I haven't looked at the schematic for a long time, so I can’t remember what else is in the path from the connector to where the internal voltage reading is measured, but I seem to recall at least one FET (on/off switch) and a current sensor. The 12.2v is getting pretty close to the no-load fully discharged 1.95v per cell, and the 10.2v is pretty close to the 1.75v per cell of a fully discharged SLA battery. At these voltages, the discharge curves are getting pretty steep, so the addition of the KX3 receive current could cause the extra drop you are seeing. Of course the problem could also lie in the power cable, connectors, or even inside the SLA battery itself. A check with a fresh, fully charged SLA battery will help isolate the problem. You will see voltage drop along the cable, even with a freshly charged battery, but 2 volts total sounds a bit high. I just pulled out an SLA that I haven’t used for a while, but it has been charged recently, and the voltage difference between the battery voltage (no load read by a cheap DMM) and the KX3 display (while in receive) was less than 1 volt. Hope this helps. [Elecraft] [K3] Noise Blanking, all-mode squelch- any strategies for settings?
Greetings Elecrafters, I’m new to the K3 (and HF in general), and I’m trying to sort out how to get useful results from the Noise Blanking (NB) features. I’m looking for strategies, tips, techniques, etc. for selecting the settings for NB. With over 14,000 possible settings between the IF NB and the DSP NB (according to KE7X’s K3 book), I find myself getting overwhelmed and I give up on NB. Honestly, I can hear very little difference as I go through the various NB settings, so how am I suppose to choose the ‘right’ one? I operate SSB almost exclusively, and I don’t use all-mode squelch - but I need to experiment with this. I’d appreciate hearing your take on squelch. What’s your secret recipe for picking NB settings that work? Re: [Elecraft] WRTC 2014 - Congratulations, Elecraft!...(and firmware update)
A little number crunching of the results (because that sort of thing appeals to me... (the XYL says, There's something seriously wrong with you.)) tends to support the idea that the hardware is not the primary factor for this contest. The results below are somewhat suspect in that only 'Radio 1' was considered, and all of the QSO's were attributed to that radio. (A better approach might be to split the number of QSO's between Radio 1 and Radio 2. I might dedicate some brain cycles to that.) Interestingly, of the teams that made use of K3's for Radio 1, six of them used another brand for Radio 2, whereas teams that used something other than a K3 for 'Radio 1' didn't (with only a single exception (W1B)) make use of a K3 for 'Radio 2'. Given the number of K3's in the contest it's not surprising that 68% of all QSO's made were made by K3's. I hope the formatting holds for the table below. Actually, the bad guys use the XP systems as a foothold from which to launch further incursions. And, unfortunately, Anti-Virus (AV) solutions are not terribly useful anymore. With more than 10,000 new virus signatures being logged per hour by the AV vendors, they just can’t keep up. Signature-based AV just isn't viable in today's threat landscape where all it takes is a mouse-click to create an essentially undetectable piece of malware. I expected a few replies, but nothing like what I've seen! Thank you to those that have responded both on-list and off. I very much appreciate the input. I've tallied the suggestions and here's what came out: #1 option: KAT-3 #2 option: KXV3A #3 option: KRX3 Almost everyone recommended filters of one flavor or another, 2 people recommended the P3, and one person recommended the KTXCO3-1. I've received the final OK from the financial officer (XYL), so as soon as my rich Uncle comes through I'll be placing an order! 73, Arlen, N7YIM On Feb 20, 2014, at 12:25 PM, Arlen Fletcher arlenfletc...@mac.com wrote: I'm about to pull the trigger on a K3/100 purchase (once the IRS returns the interest-free loan I provided to them in 2013). I plan to chase DX primarily and hope to learn more about the digital modes, though CW isn't of significant interest at this point. Given the above, what are your recommendations for the top three options for a brand new K3/100?
