I am trolling for nothing other than suggestions and possibly successful
settings used by other K3 users. The purpose of this reflector is to aid
owners/users of Elecraft equipment.

The K3 is far more capable than the 480 and has the entire line running
from it. I should not have to be content with the 480 - that is why I
have the K-Line.
That said, I am sure there is a setting out there that will work - I
have not found it - hence, the reason I ask.

Thank you David, that is what I needed to know. I have two antennas for
80 meters - NVIS and a 160 doublet. Eventually, I will extend the
doublet to a double extended Zepp. Being able to teach the KAT500 for
each antenna is a real plus.

Some place back in time I was told to turn the KAT500 on first, followed
by the KAT500, and then the K3. I still do it this way and have never
had any problems getting things to play well together after initial
turn-on. Unlikely that I would want to change from something that works.

I use a 260 foot doublet fed with 600 ohm tuned feeder (4 spacing #14
wire). It is run as an NVIS antenna - up 26 feet and flat. The K3

Exactly! The K-Line amounts to a fully automated (no tuning or knob
twisting) 500 Watt HF station. Last time I saw that was a Halicrafters

Get the monitor bottom edge down to desktop level. I used to have my
monitors about 10 inches above the desk with the rigs beneath them. The
result was looking up at them. Do NOT look up at monitors - it will
screw your neck up after a while. Also, I have specially cut glasses for
my radio

the lack of a K3 rig control program that will operate under Linux. I

Whatever is the problem? I bought the adapter from Elecraft - thus
assuring me that it will work as it is supposed to. It works with
whatever computer I have plugged in at the time - running an old version
of HRD and the current stuff from Elecraft.
So far as supporting old OS? What for? As
I had problems similar to what you describe when I first got the P3. The
story is simple: Use a mil-spec RF patch cable between the K3 and the
P3. The long story: I tried grounding straps, redoing the station ground
system, checking all antenna connections, was sent a couple of

Thank you Fred K6DGW - you are correct - I was referring to phase noise
on RX.
So far as noise from XMIT on other rigs, I have no experience. I live in
a rural area and have an extremely low ambient noise level. A noisy RX
exposes itself immediately.
As I recall, the quietest rig I ever had

mailbox. I check the list on-line and only click on what holds interest

(distributions or versions), Mint is the best I have found. That said,

the notch is set using VFO B - the main VFO is locked. You cannot change
frequency with VFO A, however the frequency can be controlled via HRD.
This lock can be toggled off by pressing the A/B button.

Last really quiet production rig I used was a TenTec Corsair - fully
analog. I should have never sold it - best 160 rig I ever had. Dead
quiet winter bands and signals would just jump out at you - sort of like
a signal breaking squelch on FM.

It works I am very pleased with these betawares. I gave my station
a real workout on 40 and 75 today and there was not a single glitch.

It is enough of a problem that I have been running 100 Watts using the
K3's internal tuner for several weeks - waiting for the fix to be delivered.
My best description of the KAT500's behavior? It is possessed!

tuned to your current XMIT frequency. For some reason, the KAT500 senses
an incorrect XMIT frequency during the QSO.
I have been informed that a solution is being worked on by Elecraft.
