i just ran a test of the Philips SHN2500, in-ear noise canceling
headphones (they are earbuds).
The operation of the KX1 outside can be difficult under high ambient noise
conditions if your earbuds don't fit well. i don't have really good earbuds
so i wanted to try this active noise
!
On 40 Meters i use a 10 foot whip with a top hat at 7 feet and a 30 foot drag
wire.
i will have special NPCO w0rw/Pedestrian Mobile QSL card available with
the NPCO post mark but they won't be mailed out until May because the NPCO Post
Office won't be open until then. No SASE's required
or ?.
There is an article on How to operate the KX1 Pedestrian Mobile on the

There will be special W0RW/pm NPCO QSL cards, just like last year, with
the North Pole post mark. No SASE's required. i worked over 50 Q's last year.
You can see a 360

at the point where the top hat is attached, every thing above that is
superfluous
for practical purposes.
i didn't want to try 80 meters, it was getting too cold.

the Gods Park in Colorado Springs, CO. i will be on 14060 +/- using my KX1 with
a 10 foot whip while out hiking around the park. 9/30/06 Op times estimated to
be 1615 to 1700z.

i have taken my Fluke DMM up into the hills...
No problems.
The only altitude sensitive components might be the LCD and
some DMM's have spark gaps which might short on AC prematurely at high
elevation.
i doubt there is any problem.
i operate out of Cripple Creek frequently.

i was running my KX1 on my external LiIon battery pack (4 - Sony US18650
cells)
which was still good after 6 hours of operation.
i put my KX1 in Trail Mode which sets the internal memory keyer on Ply
and RPT and it sends CQ de w0rw/pm over
i will be out on the Trail on Friday, 6/16/06, with my KX1, 10 foot whip and
a 15 foot drag wire.
i will be hiking in the Park operating pedestrian mobile during daylight
hours on 14,060 kHz.
The band isn't in real great condition so i will be weak.
All calls will be appreciated.

A 1 amp fast blow external fuse would be appropiate for the KX1.
Put it at the battery output connection and keep the voltage below 14VDC.

The pedestrian mobile drag wire actually stays directly behind you and never
gets in the way.
When i am trying to work DX, i will stop and sling the drag wire around and
point it
at the DX station to decrease my antenna loss.
The single drag wire counterpoise is directive.

10-ft length of thick (12-gauge) stranded insulated
copper wire taped to one of those black, expandable
plastic fish poles

i have made a new safety lanyard for my KX1.
i dropped mine on a rock once and but it survived.
The old safety lanyard i had was attached under the knurled case thumb screw.
The attachment at this point kept working loose and i lost a few thumb screws
in the snow.
Now i have the new safety

i have a new 'Off The Cuff Mini Log' for my KX1 Pedestrian Mobile operation.
The log is just some 3 x 3 'Post-It Notes' on a metal plate.
The plate has 2 elastic bands that go over my left sleeve.
The plate is 2.5 x 4.5...
Just like the NFL quarter back's play card.

Put a good dummy load on your transmitter, set the frequency within the range
of the plug, turn on CW, and use a calibrated scope to measure the peak to
peak voltage.
Power = (Vp-p)^2/400 for 50 ohms.

. Field strength went up 30% with the hat. Pretty significant
improvement.
In this case there is more improvement from matching the antenna (which
allowed more power output from the Tx) than getting the current point higher in
the
antenna.

Tip #3
If you put the KX1 into the Speed setting it will lock the VFO
and you won't knock yourself off frequency while in QSO.
The regular 'VFO lock/unlock' requires 2 buttons to be pressed.
