They're not very similar, they're identical! There's literally a website
address on the SOTAbeams winder I got from DX Engineering that goes to a
place that sells kite winders.

I was using the Coghlan’s laundy reels, but it took a long time to wind up the
wire, they would bind (not smooth turning), and would pop open when dropped.

Now I use the Midi Winders from SOTAbeams. Wind the wire on in a figue-8, no

I'm partial to the Kev-Flex kevlar core wire sold by Dave Cripe Nm0s. It's
small in diameter, wicked strong, and the PVC jacket is slick as snot on a
doorknob. I but mine from him on eBay. He usually sells it in 75 foot
lengths, but if you want a longer piece, just drop a note in the order and
he'll leave multiple lengths in one piece.

I have been using a couple of "things"...

First see:
https://www.amazon.com/Coghlans-Camp-Laundry-Reel-21-Foot/dp/B001QBZM4Q/ref=sr_1_29?crid=3GJ5K4I006OGB=camping+clothesline=1640011049=camping+clothesline%2Caps%2C109=8-29
as a wire winder.

I use 24ga Teflon wire.  The copper strands are silver plated, with a
banana plug attached.  I have been using the winder + Teflon wire for
many years.  Works great.

For my 135' ladderline fed dipole, I use 24ga silver plated wire that is
(I think) nylon coated.  I picked it out of the "junk box" (trash) at
work YEARS ago.  The closest replacement would be Teflon wire.  The
silver plating makes for GREAT conduction.

Otherwise, I would use Wireman stealth wire either 26ga or 18ga.

2021-12-20 Thread Ed Cole

Well Rich,

Guess you are a late comer.

I got my ham license at age 14 and I am now 77. I've been married 18
years. She was married to ham before me, so had been "broke-in" before
getting "saddled" with me (western sayin). That was the good news and
the bad news.

When she arrived north to live with me, I already had a 50-foot tower up
and 8-foot dish inside a "golfball" radome. She wanted a nicer home but
knew there were two requirements: room for my 13 sled dogs and room for
my antennas (and ham shack). Now I have four towers and a 16-foot dish.
All the sled dogs have passed onto "dog heaven" and only have one
house dog which is hers.

She knows the money goes into ham stuff and not beers at the local pub
(plus skirt chasing).

And she is even the NA sales rep for Dubus Magazine (which she gets a
little 'pin' money from). Dubus is published in Germany and is VHF/mw
ham technical magazine + European VHF activity news. She even has
accompanied me to ham conferences.

She is not a ham. But she is a good one and I'm keeping her!

Beat me to it. This is the 26 AWG. Breaking strength is 25 pounds, though I’ve
never broken it.

For my 53 foot wire, I use the 18 AWG, also light, but with a breaking strength
of 125 pounds.

The 24ga speaker wire is tougher, inexpensive and available locally. Postage
for long distance orders would be more than the wire itself.

It is super slick. I typically have it on a winder with a strap or
hair tie to keep it together.

Stranded 26 awg PFTE or other slick coated wire has worked very well for both
antennas & ground plane(s). I bought a military surplus spool of PFTE years ago
off Ebay. Great stuff.
