One thing to note here is that Prolific are obviously a B2B (business to

If I may return to the original topic: Ken asked about experience of
connecting a K3 via a USB port to Vista. My experience is wholly
positive. I picked up a standard USB-to-serial adaptor at my local
supermarket while doing my grocery shopping. It cost under 25
euros. Plugged it into my

Real serial ports are always better.
Next new computer I build will more than likely not have good old
fashioned serial ports. I will purchase an expansion card to get them.
I'm one of those IT types.
My company won't be going to Vista anytime soon
Yep same here, except the only place we have Vista is inside a fire-
walled eng. lab - you know, we are spraying water on the wall all the
time !

Ken,
Use the real serial port if you can. They are always more reliable than
the adapters.
If you must use the adapter, make certain you have the latest drivers.

Ken,
The way I read the Vista warningyou are on your own.
Vista has so many problems that I cannot tell you what kind of headache it is
for IT people. I know many IT shops are just not going to Vista although many
home computers are beings shipped with Vista. I don't know if that is
Bryan,
If that PC is a desktop, purchase a real serial port card and install
it. Much more reliable than any adapter.
I know that does not answer the Vista driver situation - someone else
will have to answer that question, but if that is the true situation, I
would guess that drivers will
If your machine has a PCMCIA slot, you might consider skipping the adapter
entirely and using a PCMCIA card that provides a standard RS232 serial
interface.
If course, many desktop machines have expansion slots available where you
can add an internal RS232 port card.
I guess I got lucky with a

Bob,
No you do not have to buy the adapter from Elecraft.
You can buy the one from Elecraft that is known to work, or you can buy
the $2 one and see if it works - some may, some may not, it is a gamble.
That ine from Ebay likely has some shipping charges with it too, so it
will cost you
It depends on the adapter and what you want to use it for. If you
are just looking for data transfer, I would think just about any
aftermarket adapter will work. Some do not implement the full st of
control lines. So if you want to use PTT or CW, there *may* be a
problem. I am not saying

will one for $2 as seen offered through Ebay work?
Maybe.
And how much is the shipping/handling?
