Fortunately there is the so-called blue guide on the new approach
directives that makes it clear the intended gramatical parsing of that
sentence. Read through the downloadable pdf document at

Be sure you are understanding the difference between the declaration of
conformity (a one pager where someone of stature in the company says the
product conforms to the law) and the technical documents (an often much
bigger file that can demonstrate that it does indeed conform).
I quote
The RoHS and WEEE Directives have just recently been approved by the EU
legislature. The proposed directive text is available in many locations on
the web, but the final agree-to text (including all ammendments between the
European Commission and the European Parliment) has not been available.
Group,
Is anyone aware of an authoritative position on the acceptability (or not)
of applying a lock to a breaker panel cover (and so affecting access to
other, unrelated, breakers behind the same cove) to achieve OSHA compliant
Lockout/Tagout rather than applying the lock to breaker directly?
Chris,
Looks like you're dealing with equipment for use in explosive atmosphere's
legislation/standards. The exact details vary a bit depending on the
world-region (US, Europe, etc...). One of the basic how to determine zones
documents is IEC 60079-10 and its few clones.
Watch out also for
Nick,
I have worked with the SEMI safety guidelines development committee for many
years, and also with CE-Marking compliance...
Generally speaking, there is no correlation between SEMI standards and EN
Standards. That is to say, typically end users request line-by-line
assessment of products
Richard,
The following excerpt from the EU Commission's so-called 'blue guide' may be
helpful...the two sections between asterix bars seem to address your
question.

cut-paste]
From Section 2.3.1...'placing on the market'
All,
I have seen lots of papers available on using FTIR analysis in particular
situations, but I have been unable to find any general standards on the use
of FTIR Analysis equipment in a general sense or in the specific sense of
monitoring effluent from a piece of chemical processing equipment.
An industry specific guideline (SEMI S2, developed for the semiconductor
manufacturing industry) that I spend a lot of time with has cautions against
hazardous power, defined as 240VA or greater regardless of the potential.
In the same industry, fire risk is a very muddy topic to sort out. In a
All,
Thanks for the many inputs on the idea of Safety Critical Components.
For those that are interested, here is a general summary of the input I
recieved.

All,
Does anyone have a concise definition of Safety Critical Component?
I understand that the definition of this term is highly dependent on
context, so let me frame it a bit
I am interested in the components that may be in high-tech industrial
equipment such as those used in the
Company A has product XYZ tested and certified by Exco as meeting the
requirements of the EMC directive. Company A has an Exco certificate for the
XYZ on file.
Company B buys the design and manufacturing rights of the XYZ from Company

They give the XYZ a new name XYZlplus, model number and
I have seen something commercially that achieves lockout of the
receptical, but I can't quite remember where.
The concept was very simple and can, perhaps, be designed right into
your productJust provide an eye (or pair of eyes) just above the

I am struggling with one of those darned European directives, the pressure
equipment directive. One aspect of conformance is dependent on the
application of Sound Engineering Practice.
Does anyone have a practical or authoritative definition of Sound
Engineering Practice?.
It's and idea that
Jasmine,
There have been some proposed revisions to the PPW Directive in the works
over the past few months. Perhaps the rumor you are dealing with is part of
one of the change proposals.
