The forum's console showed "hung task" messages about apache2. I rebooted it. Unfortunately the messages were not in kernel.log after reboot, so I don't know what else went wrong. This occurrence is unusual. I upgraded the kernel on January 11, so hopefully this is not a new bug in the new
