Re: [Emc-users] 7i64 suddenly missing

2015-07-22 Thread Curtis Dutton
I apologize. False alarm. I had updated the 5i25 to the latest firmware but
accidentally put in the wrong firmware. Thus after a reboot it took hold
and thus was assigning the 7i64 to a different address. after the proper
firmware and a reboot and things are fine.

[Emc-users] Another treadmill controller

2015-07-22 Thread Gregg Eshelman
I got the motor and controller installed and working on my 9x20 the
other day.

The problem is the motor won't run until I turn the pot to top speed.
Then I can slow it down, but if I turn the pot down too fast, the motor
stops and won't go again until it's run up to full. It will run super
slow and any speed in between.

With the original slide pot from the treadmill, it won't start to run
until it's turned up to 50%, then it can be slowed down.

There are four adjustment pots on the controller. Labeled MIN MAX IR and
CUR. IR and CUR have dabs of paint or glue to fix their positions.

The controller is an ATR Manufacturing MC-40. It's from an old Cadence
treadmil, circa 1995.

Between the controller and DC motor it has a large choke coil, I assume
to protect the controller from back EMF. I couldn't remove the flywheel
because it's also the cooling fan and one piece with the multi groove
pulley.

Any way to tweak this so it'll start out slow as soon as the pot is
turned off its low end?

And other crew are only any help if they know how to do a MOB recovery.
I used to resent the MOB drills when I was learning to sail, but now I

http://journaltimes.com/news/local/lake-michigan-drowning-tragic-accident/article_d2aa217d-cd0e-5e4f-aa7b-18615469fe1e.html

That is sad.

As a fellow sailor on the Great Lakes, it is easy to see how this could
happen at night when he was going to the bow of the boat to tend a sail.
I wonder if he left off his PFD/life jacket since he had a friend on the
boat?Or perhaps he simply hit his head as he went overboard.

That said, sailing at night is really, really nice.

I sail solo oftentimes and tie into the boat via lifelines when I do so
just in case I lose my footing and start to go overboard. There is no
sight worse than watching your boat sail away without you when you are
far offshore.
At night it is common practice to tie in via lifelines even if there are
other crew on the boat since it is difficult to find someone in the dark
and a boat moving at only a couple of miles an hour quickly moves away
from the man overboard.

Obviously he loved sailing and he had a beautiful boat. But 62 is way
too early to go. :-(

I think I will check my lifelines a second time the next time I go out.

If the 7I64 has power, I would make sure

1. None of the 7I64 option jumpers has gotten moved or displaced

2. The serial cable is secure at both ends

3. The RS-422 daughtercard connections are not loose

4. if the 7I64 is powered via the serial cable, make sure that the 5V power
measures at least 4.5V at the 7I64 end

Sorry about the subject line, the auto-correct on my phone snuck up on me,
corrected mis-spelling above.

Loss of a founder can sometimes be the demise of a small company. It is good to
hear that Greg Jackson did what was needed to allow Tormach to continue into
the future.

Re: [Emc-users] Fwd: Tread Mill controller

2015-07-22 Thread John Alexander Stewart
Be warned; with my KBIC clone in my G0704 (King Canada KC20VS) I needed to
add another small power supply to power the KBIC when replacing the
potentiometer with the Mesa 7i76 board - the KBIC would barely supply
enough current for the potentiometer, but not for the opto on the 7i76.

Also, the potentiometer leads are floating around 110v, (220v if that's
your power) so it is not "low voltage" circuitry.

There's some info at:

I think the controller in my micromill is a kbic, or possibly a clone of
one. The switching transistor failed several years ago, so I looked it
up and found it wasn't much of a bug. Surveying my pile of defunct
computer PSU's I found a bug with 5x the current, double the voltage,
and only about 20% more gate capacitance. When and if I replace that 200
watt motor with the 400 watter from the lathe, it won't have a problem
running it. It is an extremely stiff control, so stiff I had to put in
an ammeter to see how hard it was working as there is no detectable
speed sag when the load goes from 120 ma running free to 2 amps and a
blown fuse.

You can either use the OEM potentiometer to set speed, or something like
a mesa Spin1-x(sp?) and control it with linuxcnc. I am running the
micromill's spindle with a PMDX-106, so I have the best of both worlds
as I can switch back and forth between manual control and computer. Live
in real time. PMDX has replaced that model with a different one but
I've no experience with the newer version.
