That did it! It was set to +/-0.1. I'm guessing
Just a quick follow-up... I ran a naked X session (no window manager,
just an xterm), and this time xev shows there are keycodes detected
when i press the brightness buttons. As expected, they're off by 8
from the terminal's keycodes. And xmodmap shows that these keycodes

This is a very common occurrence in all Linux interfaces I have used. I
*believe* it's because the loading of entry names, icons, paths, etc is

just-in-time, etc), and it take a lot of
I see something odd in the menubar, menus, and dialog boxes: options
that are greyed out don't appear as grey (or another colour), but
instead appear in a sort of double-strike style. Not quite bold, but
instead the individual characters are overlayed by a duplicate,

i don't ever even need a systray - i haven't for years.
So what DO you do about programs that run mostly in the background,
but need some kind of place to display an icon for interacting with
them? e.g. Skype, Pidgin, even Chrome
The consensus seems to be that the systray in E19 is broken, and there
are no intentions to fix it. What would be a suitable E-like
replacement? What are people using right now, given that the current
systray keeps losing its icons?
Thanks!

Ok, I managed to track all crashes down to attempts to draw icons in
the systray. As far as I knew I didn't have one. I tried adding one to
the shelf and got an error message telling me there already was one
and you can only have one.
A bit more hunting through settings and i found there was a
Returning to Enlightenment after a long absence (E17 was pre-release,
i seem to remember) and am not able to find much in the way of end
user documentation for E18. The first thing i'd like to tweak is
window placement across desktops.
Currently i can drag a window towards the edge of my desktop,

Hi all,
Using E17 with Ubuntu 13.10, in case it makes a difference. I did not
like Unity at all, and remembered E16 from when i had a linux desktop
way back, so installed E17. I've only just gotten around to attempting
to tweak settings, and i think i tweaked something i shouldn't have...
