At least Unix seems to be off the menu for now.
And somebody has to set up and manage the network for the code monkeys.

IMHO, @euglug.org is the domain to use for mailing lists. It's the
one that makes the most sense, because EUGLUG is a nonprofit
organization, not an ISP or company. And EUGLUG is separate from
EFN/OPN (though that isn't always obvious (-: ).

What's the quickest way to root a RedHat box? Boot off a rescue
CD or bootable distro and edit /etc/passwd? What do I change? Do
I change the values associated with root's password or can I
just simply reset the root and/or user passwords?
Thanx.

Do you
Unless the bootloader is password protected you could just boot into single user mode
and change the password. Other than that, probably the easiest way would be to use a
bootable linux distro (knoppix, linux toolkit, etc) and edit /etc/shadow (most linux
distro's use shadow password files).
Yeah that would prettymuch do it, but surely redscat uses shadow
passwords... just edit the /etc/shadow, (and or /etc/password) and
remove the encrypted password portion of the root entry. then login
as root (hit enter for password) then type passwd (at the console)to
setup a new password.

Has anybody actually seen this alleged code? If it's decades old, except for FUD,
what's the point?

Hi,
This weekend I upgraded Mandrake 9.1 from KDE 3.1.0 to 3.1.2. All works well
with one exception - the the File Dialog doesn't work. Rather than what I
would expect I get a full screen, empty X Window box with a close icon in the
top right corner. The dialog is missing from all K apps -

Do I have to be in a certain directory to install an RPM in Mandrake?
And I am confused by the i386 i486 i586 and i686, which rpm's should I use for

It doesn't matter what directory you're in.
The i686 was the Pentium Pro which was released around

Has anyone used eclipse or contributed to the project etc? From reading
a fair amount of material on it I am left with the impression that it is
dominated by java, and focuses on web apps. If anyone has anything to
help me understand it please holler.
I loaded it up once. I wasn't too impressed, but I've really never used
a big development environment. For simple PHP scripts, there isn't much
need.
The screenshots I've seen makes me think it's much larger than just web
apps. The big idea around eclipse is it's plugin architecture. There
