[EVDL] EVLN: BBC-Top-Gear’s Captain-Slow buys a BMW i3+pih-option
http://www.carsuk.net/top-gears-james-may-buying-bmw-i3-electric-car-range-extender/ Top Gear’s James May is buying a BMW i3 electric car (with a range extender) May 26, 2014 By Cars UK [images / James May http://www.carsuk.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/590x248xJames-May-BMW-i3-EV.jpg.pagespeed.ic.wCiq0nVime.jpg James May is buying an electric BMW i3 http://www.carsuk.net/car-image-galleries/bmw-galleries/bmw-i3-ev-pictures/ BMW i3 EV Pictures ] Captain Slow – Top Gear’s James May – has revealed he’s taking the plunge in to electric cars by buying a range extender BMW i3 EV. Petrolheads will be up in arms at the perceived betrayal of the petrolhead code of conduct by James May, as he reveals he’s buying in to electric cars by getting a range-extender version of the BMW i3 EV. James has revealed – on BBC R4's You Yours Bank Holiday Special - that he feels electric cars now work perfectly well apart from a decent recharging infrastructure, so he’s taking the coward’s way out by opting for the range-extender version of the i3. It’s a very sensible route for May to take, and not at all contrary to Top Gear’s problem with EVs. The problem with electric cars is not that they’re useless, but that they’re useless as a replacement for the ICE car. If you have deep enough pockets to afford an electric car as a city car for blatting round town, running to the shops, dropping the kids at school or anything that means staying relatively close to home, an electric car is perfect. But with prices still silly – and the technology, particularly the battery technology, far from properly mature – you’ll need another car for doing proper journeys. That’s where the deep pockets come in to play, and for James May that means using his Ferrari when he wants to go further afield. The best of both worlds. Re: [EVDL] EV Digest, Vol 19, Issue 44
jerry freedomev via EV wrote: I've used for many EVs just a 2 length of solid copper wire sized right for the load [as a fuse]. Higher voltage, use longer. Using SS bolt/nuts as terminals and support with distance and something to catch the molten metal if it blows. That works! :-) A fuse is indeed just a piece of wire. But if you make your own fuses, you need to *test* them to know the current at which they will open. You can't rely on someone else's #16 wire blows at 100 amps to work, because there are many variables that have a *drastic* effect on the fusing current: - the length of the wire - any insulation on it - heat being dissipated by the connections at each end - airflow around it - the surrounding air temperature - how long you expect it to carry the current before opening But if you have the patience, you can do the tests and figure it out. Another point Jerry mentioned. When a fuse blows, it scatters molten metal around. This needs to be contained, so it won't short something else or start a fire. Commercial fuses are packaged in glass, ceramic, or phenolic for this reason. Arcing is another concern. The arc in a DC circuit can stretch out a surprising distance. This is especially true in a fuse, because the melting metal provides conductive particles to help the arc. On DC, you'll need at least an inch per 100 volts to break the arc. Commercial DC fuses generally fill the inside with sand or some other noncombustible insulator. When the fuse blows, the heat also melts the sand, which flows into the space to help break the arc. I've made my own fuses for battery boxes. For example, a pair of 5/16 bolts on standoffs in a bakelite box. The fuse element is a strip of sheet copper between the bolts. I trim the width until it blows at the desired current and time. -- I view this year’s failure as next year’s opportunity. Failures are not something to be avoided. Re: [EVDL] Thermistor to use with 7cell Nimh pack.
I use temperature dependent protective devices using metal loaded wax which opens the circuit when the unit gets hot I think IIRC 'Digi-Key' corp. stocks them in a wide range of values both current and voltage. They are not actually thermisters exactly in operation or function. They are common in toasters and hair dryers also. the catalog is on line as www.digikey.com/passives *Dennis Lee Miles * *Director **E.V.T.I.
