It’s in Norway, so it’s perfect if you’re pining for the fjords.

Whether you’re ready to make your first journey in an electric vehicle or
your last, this Tesla Model S is exceptional. Heavenly, even. Heavily
modified — it’s been bequeathed a rather long landau roof — but now seats
only two. The rear compartment is quite spacious but typically welcomes only
one. This particular example shows only 1,000 km (621 miles) on the
odometer. We assume most were collected before the significant remodeling.

The interior of this wagon is also fully customized from the front seats
back. The rear accommodations feature a lovely wood floor that can actually
be extended backward with the rear hatch opened, making egress easy.  The
walls of the cabin are graced with diamond-quilted leather which, along with
an all-electric drivetrain, make the vehicle deathly-quiet.

Located in Kopervik, Norway, the car is being offered up by the folks at
Karmøy Bilsenter. The company customizes vehicles for a number of different
purposes, though it does seem dealing with the dead is central to its
mission. It bills itself as a” leading supplier of cars to the funeral
industry” but also offers a number of other products and services.

Perhaps surprisingly, this is not the first Tesla hearse we seen. That honor
goes to RemetzCar, which debuted its version back in 2016. More recently,
that company has offered up a Model S station wagon.

If you happen to have taken a fancy to this unique build, be prepared for a
pretty steep bill. According to the website Finn.no on which it is hosted,
the asking price is 1,999,000 Norwegian Krone ($230,946). Shipping and taxes

Electric vehicles drivers could soon travel further in Idaho

BOISE (AP) - A state official says electric vehicle drivers in Idaho must
still stick close to their home cities, but that could change in the next
two to three years as more charging stations are built and technology
advances.

John Chatburn of the Governor's Office of Energy and Mineral Resources told
lawmakers Thursday that Idaho has a program to put in charging stations on
major travel routes.
  
Chatburn also told lawmakers at a joint meeting of the House Environment,
Energy and Technology Committee and the Senate Transportation Committee that
a lot of people would be amazed at how many charging stations already exist
in the state.
  
To put in more charging stations, Idaho is using about $2.8 million from a
settlement Volkswagen made in 2016 with the federal government for a
decade-long conspiracy to deceive the Environmental Protection Agency by
cheating on emissions tests.

I thought of this too when Ron, a volunteer firefighter on our list, 
found the information could be useful to him in his work.


Also, it would be good for anyone driving vehicles with lithium 
batteries to know to look for a hose instead of grabbing their fire 
extinguisher.

There are apps specifically for first responders dealing with alt fueled 
vehicles.  I had one on my phone for awhile, not because I’m a first responder, 
but because I dealt a lot with alt fueled vehicles and was interested in 
whether there were adequate information sources.

One by one, Tesla has convinced 23 states and Washington, D.C., to allow the
maverick electric carmaker the ability to sell directly to the public as a
licensed dealer.

So far, New Mexico is not one of them.

About 600 New Mexicans own Teslas. But there are no Tesla showrooms or
service centers here, and owners either have to leave the state to buy or
service their vehicles — or have the company deliver them to the door by
truck.

State Sen. Gerald Ortiz y Pino, an Albuquerque Democrat, proposes amending a
state law that prohibits vehicle manufacturers from selling directly to
consumers rather than through an independent franchise dealership.

His Senate Bill 243 would allow “motor vehicle manufacturers to be licensed
as motor vehicle dealers under certain conditions.”

It’s informally called “the Tesla bill,” though state law prohibits
legislation for one business. The spirit of the bill is to give an exception
to electric or alternative fuel car companies, but the bill as originally
submitted simply mentions “motor vehicle manufacturers.”

“We adjusted the bill,” Ortiz y Pino said. “It provides an exception for all
electric vehicles manufactured in the U.S.”

The bill passed the first hurdle Feb. 1 in the Senate Public Affairs
Committee and now is headed to the Senate Corporations and Transportation
Committee.

Tesla’s nationwide campaign to crack a national tradition dating back to the
1930s and ’40s has endless complexities as opposing camps seek to change or
retain the new car dealership setup.

Reduced to the simplest elements: Supporters see many traditions are
changing, and allowing Tesla to serve as its own dealer falls in line with
that. Opponents like the independent car dealership system the way it is.

“All we’re asking them to do is do it under the same laws that every dealer
does,” said Charles Henson, president of the New Mexico Automotive Dealers
Association. “… Tesla says they can’t do that. It doesn’t fit their business
model.”

Tesla works on a fixed-price model, not offering negotiated discounts as
traditional dealers do. Also, Tesla insists on company-certified technicians
servicing its vehicles and not leaving servicing to independent dealerships,
said Meredith Roberts, Teslas’s policy and business development director.

Tesla Chairman and CEO Elon Musk in 2012 expounded on the Tesla approach to
distributing and servicing cars.

“Tesla … would rarely have the opportunity to educate potential customers
about Model S if we were positioned in typical auto dealer locations,” Musk
wrote. “That is why we are deliberately positioning our store and gallery
locations in high foot traffic, high visibility retail venues, like malls
and shopping streets that people regularly visit in a relatively open-minded
buying mood.”

SB 243 supporters look around the country to more than half the states — 27
in all — allowing Tesla showrooms and galleries (Tesla has four states with
only galleries where there are no test drives, nor are cars sold).

“Do we want to be the last state to allow them to have a place to sell their
cars? I don’t think so,” said state Sen. Bill Tallman, an Albuquerque
Democrat and co-sponsor of SB 243. He’s also been a Tesla owner since June.

State Sen. Ron Griggs, an Alamogordo Republican, takes the opposite stance.

“When you look at all sort of states, if one guy does it should the other
guy do it?” Griggs said. “Look at legal recreational marijuana. It’s right
for Colorado. Is it right for New Mexico?”

Colorado, Arizona and Utah all have Tesla stores and service centers. Nine
of the 23 states that allow Tesla dealerships limit the number of stores.

Tesla does have nine fast-charging supercharger stations in New Mexico so
Tesla drivers can “fill up” in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Santa Rosa,
Tucumcari, Farmington, Truth or Consequences, Deming and Gallup. Tesla also
has 22 slower-charging destination charging stations in the state.

Brian Dear is one of the Tesla owners living in Santa Fe. He and his wife
moved to New Mexico in 2015 from San Diego without realizing there were no
Tesla stores or service centers here. Dear quickly founded and remains
president of the Tesla Owners Club of New Mexico, which has about 250
members.

released today a teaser image of the all-new Corsa subcompact, which in
Europe has been available since 1982. So far, more than 13.5 million Corsa
were sold.

Soon, Opel will introduce the 6th generation of the model (4th generation in
the case of Vauxhall), which will be available for the very first time in an
all-electric version.

Col Crawford goes electric  

An advertisement plastered on the front page of Sydney’s Manly Daily
newspaper this weekend has sent a charged message to drivers on Sydney’s
Northern Beaches, and a signal to the whole country: the age of electric
mobility has arrived, and there’s no going back.

Established for 50 years and one of Australia’s largest independent car
dealer franchises, Col Crawford Motors has set up a specialised area at its
Brookvale showroom where it will showcase what it believes is the widest
selection of all-electric and hybrid cars at any given location in
Australia.

To celebrate the push into electric mobility, Col Crawford Motors – located
in the heart of Tony Abbott’s Warringah electorate – is hosting an open day
this Friday at its Brookvale showroom and welcomes drivers to register their
interest to attend.

Attending the do will be Northern Beaches mayor Michael Regan as well as MPs
Jason Falinski and Brad Hazzard, who Crawford says are supportive of the
move to zero emissions transport.

Overseen by Stephen Crawford (son of founder Col Crawford), the dealership
has installed three EV chargers and is stocking electric and hybrid cars
made by Hyundai, BMW and Renault. The Nissan Leaf might also have been
included, but for Crawford losing the dealership rights to Nissans last
year.

Still, the switch to electric is a sign that times are changing, and fast.
As Stephen Crawford tells the Driven, he considered starting the push to go
electric 18 months ago but decided then that it was too soon.

“People want to own the tech, but (back then) there wasn’t enough that
delivers what they need – that’s all changing now,” he says.

With the recent introduction of the Hyundai Ioniq – Australia’s first EV
priced under $A50,000 – and its stablemate the Kona Electric set to arrive
here next month, Crawford has decided the time is ripe.

“The volume is not here yet but we have consciously decided that the market
is moving that way and we want to be in that market,” Crawford says.

“There’s a momentum that’s just going to keep on building. The market wasn’t
reacting before because there were no real, fair dinkum models on the market
– the range too small, or they were only small, funny cars – but now there
are more serious cars with more practicality and better range,” he says.

While Col Crawford Motors already have the Renault Zoe and Kangoo (they are
to his knowledge the only dealership in NSW selling all-electric Renault
vehicles) as well as the BMW i series, it’s the arrival of the electric
Hyundai models that has concreted the way forward.

“The reason is for the big push is that we have a brand new Hyundai showroom
and the Kona EV is on the way,” Crawford says.

While the arrival of the Ioniq has certainly been met with enthusiasm,
Crawford believes the Kona EV will be a game-changer.

“The Kona, being a small SUV, that’s the segment that’s going better these
days,” he says, adding that interest will likely continue to grow now that
drivers can come down to the showroom and see, touch and learn about the
electric cars on offer.

If some are still hesitant about the range of electric cars (often cited as
a barrier to uptake of EVs), Crawford is keen to point out how much the
technology is improving.

“The technology and battery life and range is getting better, and the
ability to regenerate own power (while driving) is getting better through
different driving techniques,” he says, referring to the ability of modern
EVs to recoup lost energy through a braking system that recharges the
battery.

“Better understanding of the technology is making it more likely that people
will accept them for what they are are, that they can drive 400km without a
charge,” he says.

The day-to-day reality for most drivers – particularly city-dwellers – is
that an electric vehicle with 400km charge would only really need to be
charged maybe once a week.

Many EV drivers in fact charge their cars at home, preferring to keep their
battery in the “sweet spot” of 20-80% charge.

That said, there are increasing numbers of fast chargers and destination
chargers being installed thanks to programs such as that being conducted by
the NRMA.

Col Crawford itself has installed some EV chargers:

“We have three different charging stations, one is very accessible to
customers who want to plug their car in,” Stephen Crawford says – and while
the other two are there to charge cars in stock, Crawford says he is open to
an agreement with a third party should they want to add a publicly
accessible station.

As for sales and service, Crawford says that the automakers have been
helpful in bringing his staff up to speed, including specialised training
for mechanics to ensure they

A Tesla vehicle crashed into ‘several signs on the road’ in New Jersey last
night and the driver claims that his Model X was on Autopilot and he
couldn’t disengage the driver assist system, which would be a first.

The accident happened in Middlesex County last night when a Model X crashed
off the road on route 1 near North Brunswick.

The driver was not hurt nor charged, but the vehicle reportedly “sustained
extensive damage.” it was towed away as pictured above.

According to local news outlet NJ.com, the police wrote in the report:

“The vehicle could have gone straight or taken the Adams Lane exit, but
instead split the difference and went down the middle, taking the vehicle
off the roadway and striking several objects at the roadside,”

Here’s the Google Street view of the intersection where the accident
allegedly happened based on the news report:

The Model X reportedly ran into some of the signs on the side of the road
before coming to a stop.

Again according to the report, the driver says that he tried to regain
control of the vehicle on Autopilot without success:

“The (Tesla owner) states that he tried to regain control of the
vehicle, however it would not let him,”

When Autosteer, the automatic steering feature of Autopilot, is engaged, the
driver simply has to apply torque to the steering wheel or press the brake
to disengage the driver assist feature.

Tesla is aware of the accident, but it hasn’t commented yet.

Update: A Tesla spokesperson sent us the following statement:

“Safety is the top priority at Tesla, and we engineer and build our cars
with this in mind. We also ask our customers to exercise safe behavior when
using our vehicles, including following the car’s instructions for remaining
alert and present when using Autopilot and to be prepared to take control at
all times. A driver can easily override Autopilot by lightly touching the
steering wheel or brakes.

Moreover, the brakes have an independent bypass circuit that cuts power
to the motor no matter what the Autopilot computer requests. And the
steering wheel has enough leverage for a person to overpower the electric
steering assist at all times.

Since we launched Autopilot in 2015, we are not aware of a single
instance in which Autopilot refused to disengage.”

Last month, Tesla released its latest Autopilot safety report showing that
accidents are more common on miles traveled without Autopilot.

Electrek’s Take

While we can’t know for sure without the data, this sounds like another case
of blaming Autopilot for a user mistake.

Based on the news report, the accident happened on a road with traffic
lights, which is not where you’d want to use Autopilot anyway.

If I’m understanding the comments correctly, it sounds like Autopilot was
following the lane and the driver wanted to take the exit or vice-versa and
he lost control off the road.

Autopilot is a driver assist feature and drivers should always be vigilant
and ready to take control.

Now, he claims that he wasn’t able to regain control, which is different,
but I’ve simply never heard of anyone not being able to disengage Autopilot.

If anything, Tesla owners are complaining more about Autopilot being too
easy to disengage due to the requirement of applying torque to the wheel.

But he could have disengaged Autosteer by grabbing the wheel and still have
active cruise control on, which would have kept the vehicle going forward.
That said, why wouldn’t he have been pressing on the brakes if he thought
the vehicle was being steered off road.

Finally, I would personally never engage Autopilot under its current version
on a route with traffic lights. I get a lot of value from it on highways but
it’s not currently able to properly react to traffic lights.

It’s an impressive system, but people really need to stop acting like it’s
driving for you.
